I turn big platters, mostly cedar. I use a power plane to balance it out in the beginning, I couldn’t start one as off balanced as you did. I finish the bottom and then turn it around and try for very thin. Some warp, some don’t.

It's nice to hear how you work, there are many ways and I think it is good to do it the way it works best for you. Thanks for your comment.

Fantastic job, what kind of lathe is that?
@JensHovingaWoodturning Жыл бұрын
Thank you, this is a Stratos XL lathe. A nice heavy lathe. In the future I will make a bigger platter.

Nice! Did it stay flat?
@JensHovingaWoodturning Жыл бұрын
Yes so far, although it doesn't matter if it warps sometime in the future, it hangs on the wall, just like a painting, really beautiful. But it's poplar, a soft wood and when sawing I took out the core of the wood, the core often makes the piece crack.

It’s best to start with pieces this size at about 1800rpm…in case some beginners were wondering
@JensHovingaWoodturning Жыл бұрын
Eumm, I think that 1800rpm is way to fast! A piece of wood this size is so heavy and unstable, I prefer to start with 210rpm and when it becomes rounded you can get up to 350 - 500 rpm max. Otherwise it gets really dangerous.

Be careful when giving joke advice because you will never know when someone innocent really does it and gets hurt. Just saying😊
