James, I too want to thank you for the fine chess making videos. I completed a chess board as a project in our local high school last fall and was about to start making the chess pieces on the scroll saw when I happened to come across your videos and since I had just bought a Jet 1221 lathe, I am excited to get started using your method. I have watched all of your videos many times, so I think I'm ready. Unfortunately I was running a pc of 2x4 through the jointer and the blade hit the wood throwing it one way and my finger went down on the blade. So, I've got about 4 more wks. before starting this project. An expensive lesson, but hopefully I'll never make that mistake again. I'll be watching for your future viedos.

I realize this video is a few years old, but I just stumbled across it now. Gotta say - very nice. I like the drilled base method so you can flip the pieces around onto your wood screw block, good technique. And using the lathes headstock indexing to cut the crown's cross worked great. I wonder if it would be less risky if you completely finished the crown as turned round portions and then sawed off the segments to make the flat cross after all other work is done. Then you could finish those little sections by hand without the risk of snapping it off.

Great work, Mr. Wegner. Really inspiring. Beginner or not, you make it look much easier than I think it actually is. I love the attention to quality, too. So many people don't care for quality anymore, but your work shows it can still be done. One question, though: how do I buy Tamara Vogel's music? I've looked everywhere and can't find it. Keep up the good work, sir. Can't wait to see the finishing of the pieces and whether or not you decide to make the board, too!

Pretty awesome what yo do there. I've watched all your other chess-videos. And your explanation about what you're doing is very helpful. Therefore I'd prefer hearing you doing the talking and hearing the machines instead of music which is kinda distracting. But again. Your job there is wonderful and your explanations are ver informative. Thanks a lot. And you've costed me money. Thanks to you I've bought a machine as well. ;-)

James, Love what you are doing! You have developed a lot of skills in a short time. However, coming from an old retired shop teacher in a high school on the coast of Maine, "Please don't move the tool rest into position with lathe running (turning).. One false move and the tool rest jambs into the work piece and you will be wearing the workpiece, or at least sharp pieces of it." Not fun and it hurts like hell, especially if you are just beginning to turn down a new piece with sharp square edges. It is much better to take a few seconds to place the tool rest and then turn the piece over by hand (without the lathe running) to make sure everything clears for a complete rotation. Sorry, you really do good work and it's none of my business - just 34 years working in a high school shop coming out! - FC

They look great. I prefer a king and queen that don't look extremely similar to one another, though. It makes it hard to tell what is what when playing a game. (Especially if the top gets broken off!)
