Genius idea to turn the felt!

I have to admit. I was a big time doubter of that felt cutting method. I didn't think there was anyway that would work, but it did! Really cool idea!

Good job having the idea with sanding the recess on the lathe, I think you should sand it at a lower speed as that is easier on the paper and cuts better with less heat. Also you could use a little water to help carry away the saw dust so the paper doesn't clog up. I'm excited to see the finished set!
@BlackForestDesigns8 жыл бұрын
+Cooking With Cows I will try that! Thanks for watching!

hey james, how are you? i was watching a video on percussion, when out of the corner of my eye i saw your lathe. it so happens that this very morning i sent for the same lathe. i fabricate staved bongoes, and for now this was all i could afford to buy. after i bought it it left me wondering if it was enough for turning bongoes until i saw your video turning a bowl, now that i saw what you did, i have piece of mind. i just wanted to say thank you. and you have another fan. blessings to you !

I've watched all your videos, have thoroughly enjoyed them and learned a lot. I like your pattern choice, and would like to use it, but I haven't been able to find it on line.

Alright, I paused the video at 13:25, right as you started cutting the felt on the lathe. I have to say, success or failure, it was a brilliant idea! (drum roll......)

+James Wegner Second video I've seen today where someone turned felt for the bottom of chess pieces. I envisioned a prolong of you in the hospital having just had a bowl gouge removed from your body. :)

+Cliff Hartle Why? Am I doing something wrong?
@chartle18 жыл бұрын
James Wegner I've away been told no cloth or rags near the lathe and here your are basically turning cloth. I would think a catch here would be worse than in wood.

Thank you for a great videos! I have a one question. What is OB shine juice? You said 1/3 boiled linseed, 1/3 denatured alkohol and 1/3 bullseye shellac. What is bullseye shellac? Can you explain to me please.... btw: English is my third language, my mother language is Serbian.

+Dynikus Hello. Yes - I was a mechanic when younger, and have gotten used to it being there. Never got even close to any kind of mishap with it. Go and do some turning - its great fun! Thanks for watching!

You made the lighter pieces from alder, and the darker from walnut. But when you made the Bishops, you used alder and walnut stain for the darker pieces. Why was that?
@BlackForestDesigns8 жыл бұрын
+Louie Powell I used the walnut stain for all the walnut pieces. For the alder - just lacquer sanding sealer. Then OB shine juice on all. Thanks for watching!

I don't know if you have done this already (new subscriber) but you should make a chess board for these pieces. I have some friends who have custom made chess boards and they are absolutely amazing, it would really finish your set off. Again, you may have done it already but I haven't seen it if you have.
