Very nice work and clear explanation, sir👍 In particular, I appreciated the use of multilayered Milliput to simulate marble nuances, stunning! With just a bit darker turquoise and a more scattered and stretched black, the outcome could easily resemble the Italian Carrara Marble, a very renowned marble type of ours. Keep up your good work 😉

Very creative idea for the vase. Looks really nice! I have been turning Sapele a lot lately. Got some kiln dried blanks at a good price. It turns out gorgeous and have you noticed the wonderful scent it puts off while turning? My wife loves when I walk by while turning sapele.
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Tom. I love the way Sapele looks once turned but I don’t particularly enjoy turning it, I have developed a bit of a sensitivity to the dust over the past few years. I think I now associate the smell of it with sneezing and itching. Kiln dried Sapele tends to be very dusty to work with as you will have found. Cheers Jim
@tomcowsert8962
@tomcowsert8962 5 жыл бұрын
@@JimsonMakes I definitely get some sneezing, but haven't had any itching problems from it. You are correct, though. Quite dusty. I wear a respirator while turning. My face shield and glasses get coated with the dust in minutes making it quite the pain. Constantly wiping that off so I can see what I am doing.

I don't know if it would hurt milliput but to get rid of foam you could pour lacquer thinner in there..
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 4 жыл бұрын
Using solvent would work and should not affect the Milliput. I did consider this as a method but it would be messy and more costly and pose a problem with disposal of the waste. It would be good for a more tricky shape but the foam was easy to remove on this piece. Many thanks for watching. Cheers Jim

I'm not sure you would want to, but you could get rid of the foam with acetone. It should just melt it away and not bother the Milliput. You would still need to clean up the inside and the layer of epoxy you put on the outside of the foam.
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 5 жыл бұрын
I did consider the solvent method but I think it would actually be messier and more hazardous. The foam was so easy to turn away. I think I would consider using both methods on a deeper or more complex shape. Cheers Jim

Hi Jim, I've been watching some of your milliput & wood turning videos and wondering if you thought of using a pasta machine to mix the milliput? I have yet to try milliput but I use pasta machines for mixing polymer clay when I make stuff (the pc has to be baked in an oven for the curing process), it was just a thought to make things easier on your hands. I have dexterity issues and using a pasta machine makes it easier. All the best & Merry Christmas to you & yours.
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa, thanks for watching. I have used polymer clay a lot over the years, Milliput behaves slightly differently to polymer clay, it is much stickier and would quickly gum up a pasta machine. The stickiness is a great help for my Woodturning projects but does make it tricky to roll out. Cheers Jim

Thank you very much Andy. Yorkshire Grit would probably work but you would probably need to use a buffing wheel and you would probably get through quite a lot of it, due to the wheel flinging it out with centrifugal force. It could be used by buffing with a cloth by hand but it would take a lot of effort to achieve the required friction. With wood turning it is the lathe that does all the work and the cloth holds the grit. Yorkshire Grit certainly reduces the amount of very fine dust. Cheers Jim
