The other day I picked up a long length of 4" square pine and was surprised how heavy it was, which made me think it would be an idea to turn a piece of it. I have several lnh lengths of various 4" square pine, plus we live on a 5-acre natural bush property with very lare Eucalyptus and Wattle trees, in various stages of dead, dry or green, many lifetimes supply fot wood turning. Watching what you make using basically one home made tool, or that is what it looks like, it would be easy to get a length of tool steel and keep shaping it into a gauge. Great use of pallet wood. Nicely shaped & attractive bowl. Great job!!! Suggestion: check the bearings and/or the drive belt in your headstock. To me it sounds really noisy. Most likely the belt on the reeves drive is the source of noise. Replace and it should take care of the problem.

Chucking on a mortise is dangerous. Wood splits far easier than it compresses using a tenon.

Maybe for a segmented piece like this, but every professional turner I've seen make a bowl or have asked about making a bowl will say to use to use a mortice when making a bowl.

I’ve had both mortise and tenons fail from time to time, in my opinion there is no wrong way, it all depends on the wood being turned
