I’m turner up in the north woods of Maine, and I have a small orchard so I’ve turned plenty of apple wood. The trick is to rough turn it when green! When dry it likes to split wildly and is prone to flying apart. If you would like a few green pieces to try I’d be happy to send some

I really like the way that turned out (no pun intended). The different grains give it character. The orange was a good color choice to fill in the chip. I don’t turn although the process fascinates me. There’s something so soothing, watching you turn a piece and listening to your description of what you are doing. I always watch till the end to see the beauty shot or the finished product.

Hi Peggy, the bowl is very nice. I have turned a bunch of apple and at 15% moisture it will probably move and possibly split on you, I hope not but a good possibility, it is a fun wood to turn and over time the colors it changes to is very pretty. Great job!

Very nice bowl, that wood is a lot lighter than the apple wood I have! One thing I found with apple and other fruit woods can be a bit prone to pieces chipping out and I think it is because of stress on the wood from carrying fruit......well done and thanks! Cheers Al

I really like the bowl. One of the most fun things you can do turning is to turn a WET piece of apple. The ribbons that go flying are a blast to watch. Really, any wet fruit wood will give great enjoyment. All wet wood calls to be either rough turned or turned very thin and consistent top to bottom. Give it a try. I believe you’ll have some fun with it. One question for you. You did show that the bowl was finished top and bottom. The recess, however, was not. How do you finish off the recess?
@PFWoodturning2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Doug. I sand the recess and then using my branding logo

Thank you for sharing this insightful video Peggy. The closest I’ve come to working with Apple wood is planting and maintaining an apple orchard. Our mailman smokes meats and cheeses and has been the recipient of many of our tree trimmings. Perhaps you know someone who has a smoker that may enjoy the wood shavings from this project. This bowl has some beautiful patterns, enhanced by your resin and artistry. Wishing you and your family a blessed week, gentle weather and restful evenings. Peace friend.

Nice little rustic bowl. Thanks for the Acks Paste discount. Has to be the easiest abrasive to work with - easy on & off. Quick question on Acks application - do you apply the paste then let it sit there for a bit & then wipe off, or wipe on & off immediately? I usually apply then let it for 15-30 mins or so. Then i apply the polishing wax.
@PFWoodturning2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. I don’t let it sit very long. I just make sure it’s rubbed in well.

That is a lovely bowl! I do find your manner and voice quite soothing. Question; would it have been possible to use this piece the other way round? Before you put on the face plate? That way you could have left a "live edge" on the rim & used the void as the center of the bowl??

What is the factor for you that determines which bowl gouge to use, particularly when you switch, like from the 1in to the 3/4in bowl gouge? Also, the best belt for me for the ProEdge is their 200 grit diamond belt. It has the least tool bounce of any of the belts that I have tried. Very expensive but the claims are that they last for years. Take care and stay safe
@PFWoodturning Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The bowl gouge sometimes depends on which one I just sharpened. Other times it is how deep I need to go. Other times it’s just personal preference. Thanks for watching.
