Love to watch your videos. keep them coming. I vote your mortise failed because it was too thin. I don't do many mortises becasue I think they can be dislodged easier than a tenon if there is a catch. I make my depth so that the mortise is deeper than the foot. That gives extra holding power on the bowl. Balance depends on the uniformity of the wood. If it has knots, holes, nails, rotten wood as in your case, it will never balance well especially if the defect is at the edge. Next time you add sandsealer , let it dry, then denib with 4-0 steel wool. It will come out shiny and slick like u just used the Ack's abrasive paste.

Lovely Bowl Peggy, even though it tried to escape. I think we've all been there with work coming off the Lathe. I don't think having a deeper mortice would have helped, seeing as it cracked as you pointed out. A deeper mortice would have produced a deeper crack, and I think that piece was going to crack like that due to the outward pressure of the mortice. A Tenon would have been better, but hey, it's about learning, and if you don't learn from every turn then it's worth doing.

@crocuscreekwoodworks
@crocuscreekwoodworks Жыл бұрын
I'll chime in on this one; I use a heavy grit like 80 grit to start on end grain even if it's fairly smooth and go through the grits progressively to @ 600 grit. That continual progression will file down the tool marks/scratches. If you can, use a power sander to start.

On some of your works maybe make the bottom of your work the size of the screw in arbor until you get some major weight off of your work piece. What I am talking about is your base you cut out for your clamp, so just cut it out for the screw in arbor instead and secure it with screws. Can hide the holes with filler.
