You are very right about less is more satisfactory. I live in Dominican Republic in an area that has electricity only few hours a day. SO, i build a pole lathe and a little forge to make some gouges and chisels and am doing some turning. Not perfect pieces but nice enought to show the beauty of the wood. And it's amazingly satisfying. Thanks for your video and positive thinking.

Thank you Denis. I envy the purists who use old man power lathes I bet no better satisfaction than that. Well I am not sure I would be for that but I know as soon as I discovered a lathe I was hooked for good.Thanks again Take care my friend

Great talk on the budget tools subject ! In my opinion it even reaches out to the very essence of how we consume and use products in this day and age. Picked up my Beaver Tool Co. lathe, made in the 50's, on CL for $175. It came with a workbench, a chuck, 20 chisels, numerous pen turning kits, a box full of face plates, live center, a bunch of drill chucks taper attachments, polishing sticks, chinese cone water stone, pen mandrel, and some other odds and ends. Also Bought two grinders for $25 on CL. Granted they are both about 100 years old, but they are in good working condition after some tlc. It's been a journey and I'm close to starting by wood turning adventure. I learned a lot by watching your video. You're bowl is amazing.

I like these older videos - One of the reasons I liked your channel is that you showed that you could turn as good as any of the others WITHOUT all the latests tools and the direct drive lathes. I like it - makes me realize that it's skill not technology that counts. (Also means when I screw up I can't blame my tools lol)

That is a beautifully turned bowl. Stunning form. Thanks for sharing with us. Thanks also for the words of wisdom. I recently bought my first ever lathe and tools for $100 CAD. A little shop made job with no live center or chuck. But I am not about to spend more money on a hobby I am new to, so I have to adjust - and it's been a fantastic learning experience and I've managed a few useful pieces, including two small bowls with local hardwoods. I am hooked! You're an inspiration sir.

Hi Al. Just watched your video - GREAT! I personally like things made from strange wood. You know, stuff others throw away. I see the possibilities in a piece of wood but am never sure how to attack it. You have shown me what to look for and how to go about it. Your ramblings, while sometimes long, always make a point, but one has to listen and I think that's a lot of people's problem - they don't listen! Thanks for another great video. Al, nice work. It is the man that creates the work, not the tools. Many old fine works of art were created with rather crude tools. The technique and the creativity of the artist brings out the beauty of the creation. It is inspiring to see someone that has practiced turning for such a short time create such nice looking pieces. Hey Al. Try cutting your logs lengthwise in half along the pith to help reduce checking when you first get them and before the checking starts. This will provide some stress relief along the growth rings and reduce checking as the wood dries and shrinks. Good Luck. Tom

Good Day Al, it is I again - probably the 3rd or 4th time watching this particular video and I continue to learn techniques and other great bits of knowledge. So I thought I might provide a little trick I learned years ago (odds are you already know this). For surface rust, an easy and quick way to safely remove it and put some protection on the metal surfaces that tend to accumulate is to take 00 and 000 steel will and a can of WD-40. Spray the area and use the 00 steel will for the larger tougher spots and finish with the 000 steel will. Wipe the area down with a towel and repeat if needed. Also, you can keep surface from setting in by spraying WD-40 on the area and wipe off excess - I do this to all my major machines when I know I will not be back on them for a week or 2. Well, maybe this will help in the future if you did not already know this 😊

I love it. Thanks for the great how to on turning these bowls. This is just what I was looking for and it answered a lot of questions. Ditto on the tool issue. I also flyfish and there is the same issue regarding flyfishing equipment. People think that you need to start of with a $600+ rod in order to get into the sport. The nice thing about woodworking is that you are as good as your skill level. Extra tools make it easier. I completely agree with you on that. As you say, if you can afford it go out and get it, but understand that you don't have to have it. Don

Nice to see you back in the shop. Beautiful piece of wood and very nice work on it. You found some very interesting character in that piece. The bottle brush wood does check very quickly and deeply but the color contrast between the heartwood and sapwood makes it very attractive for turning. I feel the same way about tools. Most of my tool shopping has been done on craigslist, at Harbor Freight or Home Depot. There is great satisfaction in finding a bargain, refurbishing, modifying and upgrading it, that can't be experienced with top of the line new tools. My first turning experience was done on a Shopsmith with a 4 piece set of Craftsman chisels - 35 years ago. Like many things, an adequate tool can be purchased for a reasonable price but for 10x the price you can get one that is twice as good. I enjoy your focus on the skills the artistic aspects of woodturning and using affordable equipment with the application of some ingenuity and resourcefulness. A tip on the CA glue bottle clogging - I keep a jar with a little acetone in it on the bench and drop the CA glue bottle top in it to soak for a day or two when it gets clogged. A piece of tape over the glue bottle prevents the glue from curing during that time. I have also found some fine tip pipettes on eBay and Amazon that give finer control with applying the glue and preserve the glue bottle from clogging.

I think some of us get discouraged by irregular wood due to not knowing how to look at it from the onset and take a good approach.. I think you did very well at leavening alot of that concern... I hate the tool Nazis as well... My first 2 years i used a Grizzly chuck i paid 65 dollars for.. looks alot like your Nova.. I still use it even though i have a better chuck system now and am getting ready to turn it in to a dedicated Cole Jaws.. And the majority of my tools are from auctions and Penn State the Benjamins Best... Enough of that stuff.. Beautiful Bowl..

I agree Al. I started turning with the cheapest four speed lathe bought for my xmas. My four main tools cost about the same as the lathe. Everything in total $350US. Anything else I need, I make. Unless you are trying to turn out pieces quickly to sell for profit and time is of the essence, expensive tools may speed things up but what comes out of a lathe comes from the heart and from the wood. not from having 'brand' name tools. Having to change a belt to change speed does not affect the look of my final pieces. Telling the truth about turning is just as important as showing turning. Keep doing it Al. Kevin UK

Thank you for sharing this with others that read the comments as well. I have a couple of high end tools and find myself using the cheaper ones 90% of the time. i know what your saying I am a decorator and costimers never understand I am last to finish and I allways get the blame for job finishing late I cant finish till every one else is finish before I can finish or even start sometimes that's why I love woodturning to chill out

I so enjoy your daring attitude, and willingness to try anything in order to get aremarkable result. I have been thinking that on many of your turnings, bark inclusions tend to weaken them. Would it be possible to do a butterfly inlay across the inclusions?
@AlFurtado7 жыл бұрын
It would and I have seen it done. To me if it holds together than I have achieved my goal

Thanks again for your inspiration, again.. I did my first bowl with three crotch and it turned out great... But I was wondering your said that you used water based sanding sealer under your paste wax???? I didn't know you could do that... I have always used oil based stains under a water based finish..
@AlFurtado7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and questioning on the finish. I am not a chemist or claim to know everything. I do believe it is acceptable to put a water base first what I do know is you can't apply a lacquer finish on top of it.Take care

Mr. Furtado, What makes your lathe sound like there's sand grinding in it whenever you turn it on or even when you turn the piece by hand?
@AlFurtado7 жыл бұрын
That lathe made that noise mostly because of the link belt and the fact I had an additional shaft between the motor and the headstock to reduce the speed of the lathe in half.

Nice video Al. Love how you do take chances on your wood, and as you said it ends up being worthwhile. Thanks for doing your videos. I always learn something. Just wondering what kind ow work you do. Are you a finish carpenter or something?

al. great bowl and love your videos. on your two spindle gouges that you use most often, is that an irish grind on them?
@AlFurtado8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the question. Yes that old tool has served me well and after putting that grind o it became my favorite tool in my arsenal. I put that grind on a few of my tools

Amazing wood. Is there another name for it, nobody where I live (Ontario , Canada) has ever heard of it. Would love to get some of it. Love your work, keeps me motivated as I get back into turning . Thanks

In Australia the Bottle Brush Tree is quite common, it's a Callistemon, family Myrtaceae.

You use an Atlas? My lathe is a 67 year old Atlas TH-42 Machine lathe and you are correct. While I can now afford a new. expensive, lathe however I must ask myself whether it would actually be better or the work turned out would be better. Not likely. I'll keep my Atlas...as well it and I are both antiques. LOL. Great video Mr. Furtado.

+Brian Wolfe Hi sorry for the delay on the reply. I thought I had replied before and just noticed I guess I didn't hit post.Yes I do use my Atlas and I know there are many lathes out there much better but with the things I have don to my Atlas it puts it up there amongst the better lathes. I have put riser blocks it allows me to turn up to a 17" bowls over the bed. I have a powerful 1 1/2 HP motor. I have placed a countershaft allowing me a 320RPM low speed and higher torque and have put in a reversible drum switch for sanding and some reverse turning. what it lacks is weight and we can get that with sand bags.

Sir, I have been told by Wyoming woodturner not to use a bowl gouge for spindles; or spindle gouge for bowls because the grain will split off and do damage to YOU or something else. Am I missing something?
@AlFurtado7 жыл бұрын
Listen to Sam he's an expert. Me I just show that you don't have to spend a ton of money to get on a lathe. To me the Most admired wood turner is Jimmy Clews. He said something in one of his classes. "If the tool has an edges and it cuts, than I use it." Hey I appreciate you watching my videos but this one is rather old LOL

What's that grinding noise when you spin your lathe by hand?
@AlFurtado4 жыл бұрын
That was my old lathe and I had an addition step pulley that use to add to the noise and a link belt that didn't help.

Hey Al. Thanks for all your demos. Really helping a beginner like me. But don't apologise for pursuading folk from spending spending on tools etc.. Thankfully I soon realized that we are all acquisative by nature which is in the tool dealer's favour. I don't have spare money but I can turn nice things and people like it. When the occasion arises I ask myself do I need it or do I just want it?
@AlFurtado8 жыл бұрын
thank you and that is my point we see people with nice tools or equipment and we naturaly wnat to get something as nice. If we are in the position to do so than that iis great but to tell someone that they should get someting in partucular or say something in the area that what they have is the best and you should also look into it. II DISAGREE noone needs something we just want it because we by nature want the best just saying we can turn with anything we have
@sethwarner25408 жыл бұрын
you know, Al, If you were to take your chainsaw and make a cut right across those two parts and insert a solid contrasting piece of wood, it would add visual intrest, and make the problem of flying apart a thing of the past!
@AlFurtado8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Seth my new friend. Yes you are correct but I would not do that simply because it was not what I was trying to show although that would be a good subject to cover to a troublesome piece.If you see some of my videos you will realize that I don't give up or drift too far from where I was heading.Thanks again Take care

lol, better equipment, I have a harbor frieght lathe because it's all i could afford at the time, and its been doing pretty good for me as of yet

Thank you for watching and commenting my friend. Like I have always said Nothing wrong with whatever you have. and only upgrade based on your needs or means. Nothing wrong with a HF lathe. sometimes I think it has some better features that what I have. Well Now that I have the VFD in my lathe and the riser blocks it does take it away from a regular 12" lathe but those were all upgrades done by me.. Take care

Yep. That's mine. I like the lathe. I don't like the stand.
