Woodturning: Branchy Butternut Log to The Scream Vase - Amazing Grain and a New Technique
I still have some butternut logs left and decided to make the biggest hollowform I’ve made to date - and also the biggest until I get a larger boring bar to go on my hollowing system. The 3/4” bar was vibrating pretty good at the bottom of this one.

The hollow form vessel is lovely, Lisa, and the natural figure in the butternut is astounding! One of the things I appreciate and enjoy about your channel is that although you routinely struggle with your woodturning projects, you also routinely persist and prevail. That's highly inspirational to me. By the way, I'm expecting you'll persist and prevail as you heal from your recent shoulder surgery. 👍❤

I know a lot if people use wires for burning lines, but something I've found that works really well is a piece of formica veneer off a countertop. Still needs some speed, but as it burns, it starts to conform to the curve of the piece and accelerates.
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 7 ай бұрын
That was my other option - I wasn't sure if I would be able to get it into that space as easily as the wire but I do like the Formica. I have a few sample pieces hanging on the pegboard 👍

Oh, Lisa! That's really good work! I think you chose the form very well. I know it's more work than a bowl, but I'm really grateful anytime I see something unique. I'm fond of that hollow vessel. As for inner dialog, my mind is asking me what time it is before I realize I've woken up during the night and it never stops until I'm asleep. As for those who claim they don't have much of an inner dialog, don't you have problems to solve and scenarios to run while you're just sitting there? :) I need to relax more. Glad to see you back making great work.

Than you Jay I appreciate it! Regarding the inner dialogue, what blows my mind is that they don't think in words or with language. I have a friend who thinks this way and I just don't get it and she can't really explain it. Must be somehow in images or? Fascinating!

Lisa, I will caution you to hold onto your drill chuck when advancing but more so when retracting as chips cam build up amd pull the chuck from the tailstock causing it to become a fast projectile.
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 7 ай бұрын
Hi Karl! Yeah, I usually do hold it both in and out and for some reason this time I didn't. I am still thinking hard about drilling a hole thru the end of the quill and the chuck like Lyle Jamieson does. My lathe is out of warranty now and he assures us the lathe police won't show up. I figure if he did it to his Robust lathe I can probably do it to my Laguna 😉

Butternut is so soft, so maybe its the sharpness of your gouge. Ive carved a lot of butternut and ive found that the extra sharp knives work the best for me. Even a very small wire edge will make a mark in the wood.
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 7 ай бұрын
This was maybe even a little extra soft - the outside near the bark was just a little bit too soft but it was pretty solid once I got in about an inch or so. I use 180 and 600 grit CBN wheels, I can't imagine the tools weren't sharp enough but who knows-just glad I got it to come out nicely in the end 👍

Gorgeous! I vote for The Scream. 😱😁🤣 Or Starry, Starry, Night? The only time I tried butternut was on a spindle ornament. I had hell with end grain tear out due to all the ridges and valleys I put on it. I was so put out I haven't tried it since. Maybe I'll try a cross-grain piece, though that could potentially be even worse.
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow Ай бұрын
Thanks Steve! Butternut actually doesn't cut too badly unless it's a bit soft and/or punky and what I have left is mostly a bit of both. And it stinks when it's wet! But it sure is pretty!

What a beautiful vase! That grain is amazing, and I love the curves! I really liked the flared foot before you parted it too. One thing to bear in mind with your burn, the smoother you have the wood sanded before you start, the longer it's going to take to burn in because there's less friction on the wire 😂
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 7 ай бұрын
Thanks Micah! Yeah I liked the foot too, but screws 🤣. Next time maybe I'll try a flared foot - first vase I ever did had that and I liked the look. Didn't think about the smoothness, that makes sense. I'm using sort of braided picture hanging wire so it has some texture but more speed and grit should help that go quicker 👍

I've not turned hickory, but have heard other woodworkers talk about it being difficult to work with. I wonder if that's part of your problems with getting a smooth finish, as butternut is a relative of hickory...
