In this woodturning video I add a brass and epoxy resin inlay to a Sapele bowl. This is a simple enough process but there are a few important steps you need to take to prevent disaster. I do not use a pressure pot for this project.
This woodturning channel, explores the uses of wood when combined with resin, epoxy, to make woodturning projects, that are easy and can be classed as art. A lot of the wood turning projects I make can be completed by the beginner through to the more experienced wood turner. If you have any ideas for artwork, wood inlays, epoxy projects please get in touch. Collaborations are always welcomes.

Well done. I love sapele. Nice chatoyence in the grain. The metal swarf does need to be the right size. I do metal machining as well as wood turning. I collected my brass swarf. The swarf pieces were too large so more epoxy than brass on the surface. The epoxy looks dark if too much on top of the brass swarf in placese. Glad this was only a test piece not a project. Your epoxy looked thicker than the resin I used, but it filled the swarf well. I made the mistake of mixing gold coloured glitter with epoxy in a mahogany bowl - but forgot to use sanding sealer first. What a mess. My low viscosity resin went all over the place. Project ruined. Another one added to my collection of failed projects. I am curious why you did not turn the outside to run truer. Perhaps you did at the end. Dave.

Hi Dave, thanks for the comments, I love sapele as well, but it does not have a lot of following in the community because of its lack of colour variation. I get what swarf I can from various auction sites and thanks to your comment I will look for smaller. If I had turned down a bit further I think it would have looked better. The resin is coming the end of its shelf life which is why it's thicker than usual. The chuck I use is not the best, in fact it was the cheapest one I could fine, still turning on a budget. Also as you are aware wood moved once turned and if it had been a little worse than it was I would have trued it up. Off the lathe you can't tell. Again thanks Dave for your comments, I really appreciate it when people take time to pass on their thoughts.

I know what you mean about low viscosity resin, have you tried filling swarf with CA glue? You really need to be careful as it seeps through fast.
@lv_woodturner3899
@lv_woodturner3899 2 жыл бұрын
My successful metal inlays have been with very fine powered brass or solid pieces of metal. The powdered brass looks to be solid when the CA glue cures. I found the medium CA glue surface tension did not allow the glue to soak in the fine powder. It just sat on the surface. I then use the thin CA glue, this has lower surface tension so soaked into the powder. I have to use a hot glue dam around the area or else the thin CA glue will run all over. Too expensive to have more running in places where it is not needed. Dave.

Beautiful piece. So, no pressure pot or vacuum pot, just pour and let it sit? Interesting. It appears it worked well. What resin are you using?

If the entire bowl were turned with the chuck in place, the bowl would be not be out of round as it is in the end. the main problem with only a wax finish is it wears off. I've found a sanding sealer or thinned out film finish prior to waxing is very durable.
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton Жыл бұрын
I appreciate the comment but the embellishing wax I used is designed to be used without a sealer so it can get into the grain of the wood. I would of course normally always use sealer before any finishing wax.
