Nice job, Alan! I like the way the knot turned out. Good choice of contrasting wood, as well. Thanks for the tips on the correct use of the clamps. It explains why my attempt at a similar glue-up failed.
@AsWoodTurns9 жыл бұрын
Stuart Davey Some time ago, I saw a woodworker make a special jig to clamp this sort of joint. At the time, I realized that as long as the wood was held in a straight line, then all that was needed was end to end pressure. Try it again - it will work. Alan

Great video! I like how you showed everyone how to do the cuts and glue ups. I'm sure this will inspire people to go do their own knots. I've made a few knots. I found one way to help keep the knots lined up better. You have it right to keep the wood inlay/insert exactly the same kerf as your saw blade. In addition to that, when you make your cut, leave a bit of wood on the very top holding the two halves together. So you are not completely cutting the wood in half. It will help give you a more accurate knot because it can still hold itself the proper distance apart from each other. You turn that portion off later in the process so it won't hurt to do it like this. Good luck!!

Lee K I'll incorporate this suggestion into my next knot. Sounds as if that is the best way to maintain alignment. Thank you Alan

Very nice, I love doing project with celtic knots. Nice drill handle as well, I have made a couple things like the but prefer just using the one made to go into the tail stock, I trust it more then my eyes or hand LOL.
@AsWoodTurns9 жыл бұрын
woodturningjohn For the drill, it depends on how much precision is required. If it is required, then tail stock mount is still the way to go. Also the way to go with a forstner bit. But other times, such as holes to set depth, hand held is fine. Thanks for commenting. Alan
@dandouthart6339 жыл бұрын
Nice handle Alan. If you make the accent material the same thickness as the saw kerf, then when additional cuts are made, the previous slices will remain in alignment. Thanks for sharing.

Dan Douthart Well, that was my objective but apparently I was off a couple of thousands that added up or there was some slippage. I'll do it again either leaving a bit of wood or adding some scrap. I appreciate your videos. Alan

Very nice Alan. Here in Scotland we pronounce Celtic in this context "keltic"

I love the Celtic knots! never did one, but I'm planing on taking a day off and simply make a load of blanks from all the left overs I can find to have a stock on knotted blanks to use where ever I need. You'rs is so pretty! To solve your pronunciation problem, just think of the people, are they the "Celts", or the "Selts"? I think you can figure this out :)

Sure would like to see the camera directly over the lathe turned 180 degrees so we can see what you are doing from a normal turning stance. Makes it easier to duplicate the projects. Otherwise I totally enjoy your videos.

to avoid the off set issue. cut your kerf with the blade lowered by half the thickness of you accent wood. this cuts down on the glue up time, CA the accent wood in place. When you turn the piece round it will remove enough wood to reveal the Knot. At least that's how I do my pens.
@AsWoodTurns9 жыл бұрын
Cw Hussey I agree that something along that line would help as long as the blank remains straight when it is glued up. Thanks for the suggestion. Alan
@DKWalser9 жыл бұрын
Cw Hussey Thanks, Cw! I've always used the bandsaw to make the cuts because it made it easy to stop just short of completing the cut. I hadn't thought of lowering the blade on the table saw. With the greater accuracy and smoother cut of the table saw, Celtic knots should be much easier.

David, Wish I could take credit for the idea, I took a class at "Woodcraft Dallas" and the instructor Russell Bishop showed it to me.

The Celts came from mainland Europe before migrating to Brittain and Ireland. It may help to know that in many of the mainland European languagues the Celts are actually Kelts. The Dutch word is Kelten for instance. This may help you decide which pronunciation is proper.

Willem Kossen and which do you prefer? In Boston, would you call the team the Boston Keltics? :) Alan
@willemkossen9 жыл бұрын
I dont know the Boston Keltics personally, but i would call them Keltics indeed. I do hope they are of true Keltic descent, else i would have to call them the Boston Mixed :) Its just the etymological origin of the word that made me respond. The nice thing about language is that it is alive and it changes over time.

***** I knew if iI didn't note both, then 50% of people would get on my case - so yes. The buffing unit is a Beall buffing system. Works great for convex projects but not for insides of bowls. Alan

In English, the proper pronunciation is with a soft "c", not with a hard "k". In the Celt's native languages, they use the hard "k". So, the question is are you speaking English or are you -- for that one word only -- importing a foreign word into the English language? For example, in English, we pronounce the first letter in the word "Italy" as "eye". The Italians pronounce the first "i" in "italia" using the "i" sound from the word "it". Very different. Who is correct? It depends on whether you are speaking English or Italian. The same is true for the proper pronunciation of Celtic.

David Walser I knew that this would draw a lot of comments no matter how I pronounced it. But thanks for the background and for commenting. Alan
