What I think! For starters Jimmy Clewes is someone great to get inspiration from. What I think about this piece, it is OUTSTANDING. Two beautiful pieces of wood, beautiful lines, beautiful coloring and beautiful finish. 👍👍 What I think about your production is not so positive. The speed up video makes the process seem so frantic. 😟😟I don't need to see every cut you make. It would be more pleasing to watch if you just show the most important cuts at real speed. The sanding and finish was better. And you kept the finish labels on screen long enough for these old eyes to read them. 🙂Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe. 🙂🙂
@BrickhouseCraftWorks2 жыл бұрын
Hi Glen, thank you so much for your kind words! I really do appreciate your criticism, both the good and the bad. It’s not always easy to keep the videos short enough that folks don’t lose interest without speeding them up but, I will definitely keep your comments in mind for my next video. Thanks so much!
@glencrandall70512 жыл бұрын
@@BrickhouseCraftWorks I get the same response from others. "Have to keep the video short". I don't advocate making the video longer. Devote the same amount of time to the parts you speed up. You show the same amount of time but in real time. So instead of showing 50 cuts so fast you show 5 cuts but in real time. You just pick the parts that are most interesting and or important. OK so now I am off the soap box.
@BrickhouseCraftWorks2 жыл бұрын
Haha! Well, soapbox or not, I appreciate your comments, and I welcome the critique. I’ll try to keep them in mind and implement where I can.

Nice work, really like the shape of the bottom piece and the finial is a work of art. What is that "Ebonizing Fluid" that you used on the bottom? BTW you have a new subscriber.
@BrickhouseCraftWorks2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, I’m so glad you liked it! The ebonizing solution is called iron acetate. It’s simply steel wool that is dissolved in white vinegar. It reacts with the tannins in the wood and makes it turn dark like that. Thanks for the sub!! Same to you.
@HodgePodgeWoodWorks2 жыл бұрын
Great looking piece! Inspired by Jimmy Clewes? How do you like the HS sanding sealer? Can't believe you don't have a vacuum chuck yet! 😂
@BrickhouseCraftWorks2 жыл бұрын
Haha! Yessir, it was inspired by Jimmy! The sanding sealer worked great, and I liked it much better than my homemade thinned down shellac. I know, I know….vacuum chuck is on the list! Lol
@terrybull5416 ай бұрын
What is the wood ebonizing solution you use??
@BrickhouseCraftWorks6 ай бұрын
Hello! Thanks for watching. It’s an iron acetate solution. It’s made by dissolving #0000 steel wool in white vinegar. Wash the steel wool in water and Dawn to remove the oil film that’s present in new steel wool. After it’s dried place the steel wool in a glass jar and cover with white vinegar. The best vinegar is that designed for cleaning rather than cooking but, any vinegar will do. Leave it until all the steel wool dissolves. Make sure you either poke holes in a lid, or cover with plastic so that gasses can escape and it doesn’t explode. After a few days, when all the steel wool is dissolved, you can strain out the excess bits, rust, and funkiness from the liquid then apply to the wood. Now, this only works for woods that have a high tannin content. This video was cherry which worked better than I expected, but not nearly as well as something like oak. You can increase the tannin content of any wood though by applying a black tea solution to the wood and allow it to dry, then apply the ebonizing solution. Hope this helps!!

@BrickhouseCraftWorks2 жыл бұрын
Haha!! Trust me, I feel the same way about my stuff too! We will always be our own toughest critic! On top of that, this particular piece isn’t even my own design, so I can’t even take credit for it. It’s a slightly embellished version of Jimmy Clewes’ square oriental box. The only advice I can give you is to look for inspiration everywhere, including to other turners. Lastly, focus on your honing your finishing regimen. Sanding and finishing should take as long or longer than it took to turn the piece. Thanks for watching!
