In this video I turned a gear shift knob out of a resin blank I got from Zac at NVWoodwerks. I turned the Walnut and Maple gear shift knobs on a live show, and waited to put the CA finish on for this video.

Beautiful... makes me wish I still drove a stick shift.. (almost). Love your work & videos. I'm a senior who has never done anything like this. (not considered ladylike in my youth) So even though I barely know a spindle gouge from 120 grit, I'm learning. Love the camera work, & angles, & the fact that there is not a lot of useless chatter, you just get on with it.!!! now I'm going back to watch more videos.

Thank you so much for your comment at about 4:40 - to slow the lathe way down to like 50 rpms when applying medium CA glue. I am finishing a pen with CA for the first time and was getting ripples. I've been watching videos like mad trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with others!

Carl, Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge . Your videos are very educational. I do have a question regarding the CA glue. Do you wear any type of safety gear to protect yourself from the vapors? Is that why you have the dust collection hose set up next to your tool rest?
@CarlJacobson

Thank you so much John! Yes you should have a well ventilated area when applying any finish. I usually have the dust collector on and it's being pumped outside.

Your welcome, thank you so much for the response! I made a gear knob for my brother's car from Lignum Vitae and finished it with CA like in this video. It came out great, but at the end I noticed a spot at the very top had become dull. So I probably sanded it too much. :( Ah well, it's a learning process, right? So my next question is: Is the CA strong enough if it's so easily sanded off? What if you wear a ring while driving for example. Will it scratch the CA? Thanks once again. Grt Robin

@@CarlJacobson, at minute 6:05 (based on my count roughly 120 rpm). Sorry, not meaning to be a problem but I can see how you're doing it and I love your work. You just point out that high speed is unnecessary. I usually run at close to top speed and I like to see that's unnecessary. Plus high speeds tend to want to burn the micro-mesh, so you're right to point out not to get carried away.
