Turning a lidded box is a classic woodturning project that can be both challenging and rewarding. It's a great way to learn the basics of woodturning and to create a beautiful and functional object.
In this video I turned a small lidded box out of Maple and Walnut. I shaped the lid to look like a button. This would be a great gift for any sewer.
Tools I used in this video.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. We also do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning.

I have friend that I found out a similar way her allergy to maple. I had maple sawdust on my sleeve from a project I was sanding and she started having some issue with breathing. I later learned about maple syrup reaction too. So, you are super kind to separate your self from Robin and the walnut!

I love these sweet little boxes!. I'm so sorry to hear about Robin's allergy. Has she noticed a change when she eats nuts now? Even if not, she might want to check into carrying an epipen, for just in case. I'm glad you both figured it out before it got serious.

Great project, wonder if stitching yarn between the holes would result in an attractive visual effect of the lid being sewn onto the box?

That's so cute. I'm allergic to basically all wood, more like all tree sap. And since they use tree sap for all adhesives, I'm allergic to all adhesives as well, including band-aids and tape 🤦🏼‍♀️

Neat looking box. My wife is a quilter so this is an idea that's going on the future projects list. You sand with a couple grits dry before transitioning to the walnut oil. Is there a reason that you can't start with the walnut oil on the first grits?
@CarlJacobson
@CarlJacobson 7 ай бұрын
Thank you Mark!! I start dry incase there's some torn grain or tool marks. It's much easier to get them out with dry sandpaper.

Does the walnut oil bother Robin?
@robinjacobson9616
@robinjacobson9616 7 ай бұрын
No the walnut oil doesn't bother me, all the proteins have been taken out. It's definitely the dust!

Your dust collector hose looks like it's just clamped to your banjo or somehow to your lathe. How is it held there, please?
@CarlJacobson
@CarlJacobson 7 ай бұрын
it's hooked to a rail system on the lathe. I don't have a specific video on it, sorry.

Is there an alternative to using Walnut oil for the sanding process, just a thought cause you never know these days. Geoff
@CarlJacobson
@CarlJacobson 7 ай бұрын
You could always use Howard Bees Wax and Orange Oil. It's not the Walnut oil that's causing the problem for Robin. It's the dust from turning the piece of Walnut. The oil is tripled boiled and has no proteins, so it's safe for allergies.
