This project was inspired by a subscriber, which is really cool. I mixed up lots of different colored resin cubes/circles and then placed them in another load of resin to make this funky vase.

OH! *enthusiastically raises hand* That was my idea! I had it when watching your Lego pen #2 video. And today when I saw this one pop up I just thought "wow, that sounds awesome!" and then you said it was someone's idea and I went "... hang on!" and went to dig up that comment. :D This turned out really awesome, so thank you for using my idea! Now I wish even more that I could come to Makers Central, but I live in Sweden, so... Also, I think if you washed the "cubes" (semispheres is the word you're looking for there!) in alcohol or something before putting them in the resin, it would adhere better. Various layers of grease or dust or something might be involved! ;)

Something you might want to look into his those silicone ice trays come in a wide variety of shapes. Everything from the half spheres you were using to guitars, Hearts, puzzle pieces, death-stars, skeleton bones, and pretty much anything you can think of. It would be cool to use some of these shapes Within a project. Even come binding different shapes such as hearts and puzzle pieces to make a Valentine's type project. You know, you're the missing piece mushy stuff. LOL.

Bianca Brooks .. assumed people's do resin molds with actual gummy bear in them. But I suppose you could not put that on the lathe and turn it. Unless you then put a protective coating of resin around the exposed gummy parts. And you could also do any color you wanted you which would be cool as well. I think it would be really cool to use some of the other shapes. Like they have Star Wars ones that I think would look awesome.

Small spruce, tamarack or pine cones make a very nice filler as do the needles themselves. Colorful leaves in autumn as well if placed properly and you heat your mixed resin in the microwave prior to the pour to facilitate the resin soaking into the leaves also looks amazing. I've done this with whole flowers and rose petals as well and found good results. Just some ideas which might be to your liking. Mosquitoes, ants, and yellow jackets also make for some amazing pieces if you fix them with two separate pours. Just clear resin or a cylinder of wood for the center cavity which is all to be cut away, and then the insects fixed to the wood and then a larger pour around this, making sure your resin is thick enough to shave without touching the insects. Cool as cool can be.

So do all the shavings of resin just turn white with no color? If they reliably retain some color, it might be fun to mix them into a pot with some resin and suspend the shavings.

hey buddy, resin will not easily bond to cured resin, your Colored HEMISPHERES. sand them before mass pouring or take out HEMISPHERES before fully cured and do mass or final pouring then. that is a great project but needs to be larger for sure. maybe a tall vase, 3-4" wide or 8-10cm wide at base and top lip! a wooden base with a mild led base light would be a knockout project! nothing short awesome though, really like it! try this idea, sure you will be very happy and inspired to experiment more!

Nick, just found this channel. 2 thumbs up and greetings from America. I just watched your vid where you made use of shavings from various tree/wood species and had an idea. What about obtaining small samples of wood from each continent, turn a sphere to be used as a globe, create reliefs in the shape of each continent then fill them with resin mixed with shavings from each continent's corresponding native species. Perhaps you could make an easier version by creating a rectangle "world map" instead of the globe. This was my idea for something meaningful to be given away to a lucky subscriber in celebration of this channel's 100,000 subscriber milestone. It could represent the common interests in woodworking that is shared among so many of us which brings us together despite our many geographical locations or other such things like fundamental differences in culture that so often work to divide us. I don't know... just an idea. And to address the elephant in the room concerning how to fill areas on a sphere with resin but without it flowing away from the reliefs where the resin is intended to remain... I believe if the reliefs were small enough, and kept shallow, you could wait for the resin to thicken a bit, have the sphere remain on the lathe, pour the resin into the relief, then set the whole thing spinning at a constant slow rpm (perhaps 10-15 rpm maybe?). Use heat lamps to accelerate the resin's set time and once it's hardened, clean up any excess resin by turning it one last time using a finishing tool of your choice or a series of sandpaper grits. Keeping the layer(s) of resin shallow should help with bubbles and manageability. Anyway, love the content and am looking forward to seeing the channel grow! Cheers. *Note: I have never attempted this myself and I am NOT a master craftsman in this area of woodworking. This is ONLY an idea and should be treated as such.*
