After how well the last bamboo bowl came out (if you haven't seen it yet, link is here: • Woodturning | Bamboo &... ), I just had to try another. And this time, I decided to lay the bamboo segments down instead of standing them straight up. I took a long look through all the colour/mica suggestions you all made (they were amazing, by the way!), and after many hours of deliberation, I settled on black and red. If this colour combo isn't quite your cup of tea, by all means, keep the suggestions coming! I will certainly do more of these in the future.
For those wondering why I left the bowl so thick, I have unfortunately learned the hard way that bamboo (the outside of the shaft, at least) really doesn't bind to resin well. That's probably because I forgot to rough up the bamboo surface with some sand paper before doing the resin pour. Lesson learned! While turning the outside of the bowl down, I had a bad catch on the cutting tool and one of the bamboo shafts fired right out from the rest of the blank! Thankfully, I was able to get the shaft back in with a little bit of sanding and some CA glue, and in the final piece, you can't even tell that anything went wrong. However, I really didn't want to push my luck with making the walls of the bowl too thin; my fear was that all the bamboo might fly out. And, so, we have a thick bowl! I hope you enjoy.
