Hello, friends!
Come check out our brand new shop launch! formanwoodwork...
_____________________________________
After how well the last bamboo bowl came out (if you haven't seen it yet, link is here: • Woodturning | Bamboo &... ), I just had to try another. And this time, I decided to lay the bamboo segments down instead of standing them straight up. I took a long look through all the colour/mica suggestions you all made (they were amazing, by the way!), and after many hours of deliberation, I settled on black and red. If this colour combo isn't quite your cup of tea, by all means, keep the suggestions coming! I will certainly do more of these in the future.
For those wondering why I left the bowl so thick, I have unfortunately learned the hard way that bamboo (the outside of the shaft, at least) really doesn't bind to resin well. That's probably because I forgot to rough up the bamboo surface with some sand paper before doing the resin pour. Lesson learned! While turning the outside of the bowl down, I had a bad catch on the cutting tool and one of the bamboo shafts fired right out from the rest of the blank! Thankfully, I was able to get the shaft back in with a little bit of sanding and some CA glue, and in the final piece, you can't even tell that anything went wrong. However, I really didn't want to push my luck with making the walls of the bowl too thin; my fear was that all the bamboo might fly out. And, so, we have a thick bowl! I hope you enjoy.

I've seen bamboo/resin bowls before, but this is the first with the bamboo in this particular orientation ... the shapes and grain of the bamboo is amazing, which together with the resin has resulted in an absolutely stunning piece 👍

Excellent video on a process that I would like to try. Never worked with bamboo before. Notice you used Alumilite clear cast which I have worked with before. Directions state for thickness not over 3/8" (9mm). You are pouring much thicker......did you have any issues and possibly why didn't you go with Alumilite Amazing Deep Pour?.........Thanks

This is an absolutely beautiful piece, well done! I have a couple of questions if you don't mind? What was the glue you used at 3:13? And do you find that's always secure enough? It certainly seems to pay dividends with ease of removal compared to gluing more conventionally. I'm also curious about the kind of chunky design with the thick walls. Was that a purely aesthetic choice? Or is that something you find necessary working with resin (I have never made a resin bowl).
@formanwoodworking
@formanwoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! And it's just hot-glue! I've been told by some folks not to mount my pieces this way, as they argue it isn't a very secure method (and there's a danger of it flying off), but I've never had the slightest issue with it. Carl Jacobson does some of his work this way, and he says the key is using a very hot glue gun (the glue should be smoking when it comes out). This way, the glue is so thin that it can really grab well to your project and the waste block. If you only have a cheap craft glue gun, it might be too cool to bind well. And yes, it makes life pretty easy when it comes to taking it off the lathe and remounting on the chuck. It only takes me a minute or two to remove the glue with a parting tool, and then it just pops off. As for the thickness, no, that was not intentional :( I do like my bowls a bit thicker than most, but this was the result of one of the bamboo pieces actually breaking free of the resin and flying out while I was turning the piece. Turns out, the outside of bamboo is very smooth, and it doesn't bind to resin very well (in the future, I'll just take some sand paper to the bamboo first and scuff it up a bit before doing my resin pour). I was thankfully able to get the bamboo piece back into the rest of the bowl with some CA glue, and you can't even tell now, but when it came to hollowing out the inside of the bowl, I really didn't want to push my luck with thin walls. I was worried more bamboo pieces would just break free. Lesson learned!
