I have found a tenon has fewer problems than a mortise. Compression is more stable than pushing out when it comes ot holding a bowl in place.

I read your description and you asked for viewers opinions so… here goes. I think the bowl looks great! Good job battling through the setbacks. I think this design has lots of possibilities to explore. Different woods and resin colors as well as shapes. I saw a video by a guy from Florida who made a similar bowl but he made resin segment rings and alternated them with wood segmented rings. He used five minute epoxy (I think) to glue up the rings. Thank you, Jerry! I'm sure if you ask 10 different turners that question, you'll get 10 different answers. From my experience, I did try starting things off with bowls, and I don't think it was the greatest decision. Bowls are tricky. They're large, for starters, which makes things challenging for a whole bunch of reasons, and each part of the process requires a number of considerations. My first few bowl attempts were rather disastrous, and I remember they left me feeling a bit discouraged afterwards. Certainly not the best outcome when you're just starting out! After that, I decided to give pens a try, and I would personally recommend these to anyone just beginning. Pens, in my experience, are a much easier first step. You're dealing with much less material, which, one, makes approaching turning much less intimidating when you're just starting out, and two, it will take you much less time to finish a project. Even a beginner can finish turning a pen from start to finish in 1-3 hours, whereas a bowl might take a beginner days to complete. They're also less technically challenging to turn, meaning your odds of successfully completing a pen are much higher. In my opinion, pens are a great starting point as they allow you to develop your skills and get comfortable with the lathe/tools all while notching wins on your belt from successfully completing projects. I went back to bowls after turning... I don't know... maybe like 30-50 pens? And the difference was massive. The tools felt more comfortable in my hands, and I felt way more confident in working with the bigger material than I had when I first started out. Beautiful combination of wood and resin ... might try this one day 👍 I've only just started turning, but I already don't fancy the mortice technique of holding a piece, to me you are forcing the wood apart when you expand the jaws to hold it ... a tenon would seem to be advantageous in this respect as it compresses the wood, i.e. it becomes stronger in certain respects.
