One cube becomes a vase with 6 wings and 3 feet!
Thank you all so much for watching! Yes, another month rolls by and my hopes for a quicker project turnout were dashed... but that's my life right now. On the bright side, I got a new camera after the old one stopped focusing on objects more than 5 feet away. Let me know if you like the new picture!
This is my 29th filmed project. I had been wanting to try another cube theory project, but the amount of wasted wood from the typical cube turning drives me nuts. So, I chose to waste resin instead... literally. It started with a horrible miscalculation, in which I mixed exactly twice as much resin as I needed, and when I realized I had a bucket of resin left over and a ticking clock, it was too late to do anything about it. In fact, I tried mixing in more pigment and before I knew it the mixer pulled out a glob of curing resin. Check out my Instagram (@adamsen_woodcraft) for the pic. Anyway, the project went fairly easily until I decided to use lacquer as the final finish. Well, it's getting too cold in Maine for lacquer to cure properly, and it got somewhat cloudy. I don't think the final finish is horrible, but it isn't ideal. I simply ran out of the time and patience required to fix it.
Again, thank you all for watching. I appreciate your comments, even though I can't respond to all of them. You are the best audience anyone could wish for!

With other turners I can usually figure out what they are doing and how it will turn out. Your work is quite different. I can never seem to work out what the finished project will look like. That is not a complaint but a complement. I love your work and I love waiting until the end to see what it is that you've done. You are wonderfully creative. I tip my hat to you sir!

I am completely in awe. To be able to "see" where to cut when the spinning blurs the shape so that it looks you're cutting in nothing... It is simply awesome, how you must see the final shape in your mind... Beautiful... It's more than craftsmanship, it's pure artistry.

The proper answer to your question is: "Yes." I cannot speak for the artisan here, but atleast for myself with both wood and metal work - you often start off with, atleast, a basic idea of what you're going for. That said, nothing is ever _perfect,_ and often a whole new idea will form mid-way through the early stages of a project. However, at least for his needs, I would have to assume that he is setting out with a plan in mind. He moves with too much initial purpose to be winging it, and settling on a design that begins to form out of, basically, dinking around. It's pretty easy to get lost along the way in an unplanned project, and end up with something quite beautiful when you are finished - however something that even you did not intend when you set out. Unless he is simply cutting past a great deal of standing around, staring at the lathe, scratching his head wondering what on earth he is doing? He has at least a basic plan from the start. As he _does_ edit out his taking of measurements I guess it is possible, but fairly unlikely. You'd want to have a goal in mind if recording it. Some of the wood he uses is quite expensive, and you wouldn't wish to waste any if possible. If he is like me, a lover of wood, you wouldn't want to waste any _anyway,_ and even if you meander down a rabbit hole of new ideas as you work - at least you HAD a workable idea to start with.

Wow! The resin adds a whole new dimension to the wood and I really like what you did for the base. Last week I turned a bowl just like this out of cedar. But, I turned the bottom flat. I wish I had seen this video to do the same. And, I did not use resin. Now, I need to look at doing another bowl using resin. My cedar bowl is just a hunk of wood that looks nice, but yours is much more interesting. Thanks for the new idea and inspiration. I’ll send ya pictures once I do another in the next few days. Now, off to Dallas to buy some resin. BTW...I still standby my past comments that you are definitely turning into one of the premier wood turners. You always turn something interesting. And your video intros are wonderful. God has blessed you with some nice talents. I am happy to see that you are not letting them go to waste.

Your videos are so wonderfully soothing, and the products you create are lovely. I feel your sound design really deserves commendation, because you've picked the music choices well, and you found a wonderful balance for the sound of the lathe. Most other woodturners, the sound of the tools against the wood is grating to the ear, but you've managed to find a sweet spot with it. (All that, and you have notably sexy hands, but that's secondary to the quality of your work.)

Okay David- I gotta know: Did that shape come to you in a dream, did you preplan and draw out the design, or Dis it just “happen”? I gotta say that first of all, it’s quite lovely, and I dearly love the geometric Lines involved! I follow quite a few turners on “the Tube” , you and a couple of others I truly and eagerly await your weekly projects! The others are just - there, if you get my meaning...... anxious to hear your reply!

Thanks Charles! I appreciate that! I have experimented with this concept once before and seen other cube turnings on the Tube, but it always bothered me that so much wood was wasted in a simple 3 winged bowl.

@@DavidAdamsen yes, it. Sad to see so much beautiful burl go away, but still, a wonderful piece

I love the unexpected. I'm a weaver, and the grid-like structure of threads on a loom does not want to produce curves, so that's what I love to do: make curves on a loom. Here is the polar opposite. A lathe doesn't want to make corners and angular wings. But here you've done just that. And what glorious wings!!

Dave- you said that you were just starting with epox....next time you cast coat the wood with clear base epox for enough time for the epox to start or tack up..keeps the bubbles from coming out into your resin and they will go out away from the covering resin surface.....same problem with any wood / resin cast.......only takes about 45 minutes and no effect on the bond

Thank you! I had the concept in my head and was trying to get a way to use more of the shape rather than going for just 3 corners. I appreciate your support!

Without doubt, the most incredible and most beautiful creation I have ever seen leaving a lathe. The forethought, the design and the absolute steady handed craftsmanship that went into this blows my mind. At every stage, I thought WOW, leave it at that..then you just kept excelling yourself! I felt myself sweating, the more fragile it became, thinking one little slip now could be disastrous! Outstanding work. Well done, Sir. Well done! 👏👏👏
