Hey Phil I just thought I'd say that one of the reasons that I love your videos is that you are so honest with your work, there's no pretention of being an expert, you tell it like it is, and we get to see things when they go well and when they don't. Anyway just wanted to say keep doing what you're doing it's awesome. Thanks

I love your tip for using a block of wood with some grip cloth. I have been using it for a couple of weeks. And to think, I nearly blew a hundred quid on reversing jaws!! Thank you Phil, Your videos are my favorite turning vids on YT.

I'm so glad you are finding the block of wood idea useful, Mikenco! I have a set of those jaws and after using them one time I thought "there must be a better way!" Sure enough, there is! Besides, just try holding a piece like this or any of the other natural edge, live edge pieces. You cannot get a good grip on them. Thank you for your kind comment! Phil

Phil that is really a great piece of oak.It has a lot going on based on the fact it was a root. And I would say that root owes you a lot. It had to spend it's whole life underground where nobody would ever see it. Now you have turned it into a beautiful bowl for all to enjoy. That top edge looks great with all the contours going around it. Great job my friend! Gary

Howdy Phil I've never seen so much spalting in Oak .... I am working on a piece right now out of pine , making a sink , there is some spalting going on , it is actually the first time I have ever seen it in Pine ! I live such a sheltered life LOL ... Not seeing spalting in Pine . We have a lot of Oak in New England.... people buy it for fire wood by the tons . Being such a hardwood I bet it came out real smooth . Definitely got the key tools shop working with Oak , even if you use carbide ! Keep on turnin'

Howdy, Bruce! I think I have seen spalting in Pine, but more often, I see some pretty wonderful colors, like pink or blue. Don't know what causes it but it's pretty cool when you can get a piece like that. A sink, huh? That must be a big undertaking! Yeah, I know Oak is very common back your way. I wish it was so, here! Yes, it finishes very smoothly, I really like that part! And yeah, sharp tools are a must! Thank you, buddy! Phil

Another great job. You've increased my interest in live edge bowls, especially the idea of showing the wood as it is rather than how you might want it to be. I'm a newbie to turning and often find a new (to me) shape while roughing out a piece of wood. Sometimes the wood just shows the shape it wants to be. Keep turning...
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Robert! For me, once I started turning live edged pieces, it's really hard to go back to anything else. There is just something new with every revolution of the piece, to discover. It's a hunt with an often wonderful reward. And, yes, the wood will dictate it's final shape. Thank you for your understanding words and comments! Phil

Love it. I turned a piece of hickory root, end grain. I found out that root wood is so porous, that I could blow air through it, before it was finished. If I can figure out how, I can send you some red oak this fall. My friend had 80 acres of woods, that had to be cleared of them, due to gall wasps. I'd be honored to have you turn a piece or two.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Mark, for taking your time to watch and comment, much appreciated! Interesting about the hickory root being porous. I've never run across that. I would love to have some red oak to turn! If you wish, you may contact me at madronawoodworks@gmail.com to make arrangements. Just keep the gall wasps out of the box, please! LOL! Phil
@turntbyhi-lo35165 жыл бұрын
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop , will do. It will be this fall, when the deer ticks go dormant. Lyme disease is rampant around here. As far as the gall wasps go, they only go for the smallest limbs. And only red oak trees. All the other oaks seem to be immune.

Howdy Phil! Greetings from the Central Coast of California! 😊🌊 I was so excited when I got the notification that you had posted a new video! Sadly I didn’t have time to watch it till late, but here I am happy to see another Phil original! Once again, it seems like all the words of praise have already been said. I don’t want to sound like a 🦜 parrot. 😉 As little bit you know about me, I think you probably know my thoughts about it. It’s GORGEOUS! I love it! Beautiful piece of art. The feelings that come through to me while watching are warm and somewhat comforting. I like to think of little stories about how a particular piece of wood ends up with you to turn it into something wonderful! Don’t worry, I’m not crazy. My imagination helps me through the anxiety and difficulties of everyday life. (Caring for my elderly parents, and I’m no spring chicken either. 😂🤪) Anyway, thanks for sharing your talent and making my world a bit brighter! Take Care my friend! 💜🤗🌸🦋🌸🌎🇺🇸 ~ Roma

I always love reading your thoughts, Auntie. I hope you don't mind me calling you Auntie instead of Roma. I've had a lot of Aunts but never an Auntie, if you know what I mean. I'm so glad to be able to share my work with others and then read what they think of it. Fortunately, like your comment, they are pretty positive. I too, love thinking about where the wood came from and what it has endured before it got to me. That's probably the most important aspect of what I do. What you are doing, now, taking care of your parents, is something I know a little about, too, and you are an angel on earth for doing it. Thanks for staying up late and watching, much appreciated! Phil

Beautiful piece of work Sir. as always. Couple of questions came to mind while I was watching this. 1) you seem to favor tenons vs. recesses. I understand that they both have their place, but when all things are equal does one have an advantage over the other? 2) I also notice that sometimes you use sanding sealing with shellac, sometimes just shellac, and sometimes wax. What kind of criteria do you use to make that decision? Thanks so much.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Roger! 😊 1.)The tenon vs. recess debate can go on forever and get heated. I generally prefer a tenon, I just think it's stronger but like I said, others will disagree. Also, with a lot of the pieces I turn, sometimes cracks are present and you don't want to open the jaws into a recess when there are cracks. 2.) I never use shellac without first using shellac based sanding sealer, you must be thinking of someone else. I may have used only wax about once in my life, not sure I filmed it.

Nice bowl! And I am glad the shape found you. I love to turn oak as well, hard but little tearout, and it finishes so nicely. I am curious why you don't date your bowls when you sign them?

Thank you, David! I used to write the date until I read someone say, when selling, people think there is something wrong with a piece that has a date from a couple years ago so they don't buy. Very cool root piece! Makes me nervous every time i watch you take the little nub off 😂 I'm sure you've got it under control! I've got a whole oak tree in my shed but tell the truth I'm a little scared to start turning it, it was dead a long time before it came down and is full of holes and cracks.. maybe I'll get round to starting on it soon. Looking forward to the next one buddy
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Will! Sometimes removing that little nub can be troublesome, but you're right, it's under control. Low RPM's is the answer. Gives you time to react. Don't let that Oak go to waste, buddy! As long as the cracks aren't super deep or go all the way around, it's turnable. Just adds character! Phil
