Your woodturning skills are impressive. A note from a baker: please don't put wood oils or waxes on rolling pins. The person baking needs the surface to hold on to flour and NOT be oily. It makes it unusable unless that finish is sanded off. It's a BEAUTIFUL rolling pin!

I've done well with simple 'treen' turnings at craft fairs. Rolling pins of various styles are very easy, spoons and ladles can be surprisingly difficult, honey dippers are fun and easy and if you want to fancy things up you can do some chip carving, inlay, etc.

@Lee-qp6gf2 жыл бұрын
@@JackMackWoodturning No, it's a container, with a lid, that will store the type of salts used for "pinches" of salt when cooking. Sometimes called "salt cellars". I think you could look them up to get an idea. A lot like a jewelry box but maybe not as deep and I use a three-inch opening to be able to get your fingers into. Hello Jack! I am an amateur woodworker who wants to improve on his woodturning skills. One part in particular that perplexes me is how you can tell how thick the bottom half of a bowl, vase, or any curved project is while turning the interior of it. For the top half I am able to sight down a relative line or reach with my fingers, but once I get to the bottom interior I have sometimes gone past my intended thickness without realizing it or have had to stop frequently to measure however I can. I would love to know if there are any tips or tricks you can offer! Love your work, keep it up! Thank you so much!
@JackMackWoodturning2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathan, thanks for watching dude. That’s just part of learning woodturing.. there are ways to measure .. the items in the following link are used to test thickness. www.highlandwoodworking.com/double-ended-bowl-caliper.aspx But to be totally honest I don’t think they set you out on the right path.. I use my fingers. Lathe off.. Il run one hand down the outside and one down the inside… your brain connects your top hands 😉 and should with a bit of practice tell you what you need to know.. often if I’m struggling with a big piece il close my eyes I find that helps.. But the main way is to look at the outside.. the inside should match.. it’s like anything tho Nathan, do it 1000 times and it just becomes muscle memory.. I know this isn’t the answer you want as lots of people want results straight away.. I did when I started.. but there is absolutely nothing that tops 1000s of hours at the lathe Turing bowl after bowl. You’ll start to turn thinner and thinner walled bowls and when you do you can hear and feel the thickness of the walls with your gouge which becomes an extension of your arms/brain. With the greatest of respect to you my friend, what you are looking for is skill, and it’s already inside you, you just have to unlock it through constant repartition. When I learnt to play backgammon I was told “it takes an hour to learn and a life time to master” this is the same as woodturing, lots of people are drawn to it because of its seemingly instantaneous results.. but to do it well takes practice and you can’t buy skill in a bottle. The awesome news is that the journey from where you are to where you want to be is hours and hours of fun rewarding work.. frustration yes, but it’s worth it when all things line up and you get a true feel for what you are doing. As you can probably tell I can talk for days on the subject. Always happy to answer your questions 👍🏻

I enjoy the fact that it IS actually wood you're turning, not resin* but I kind of wonder: if you can afford a wood lathe and expensive woodworking shop, you must either a) be a professional woodworker (in which case you don't need a youtube video on wood turning things that sell) or b) have another source of income, in which case you don't need to sell what you make on your very expensive lathe. ;) * not that I mind resin, I just wish many KZbin presenters would be honest and admit that they're turning resin with wood inclusions...

Yes, I’m a professional woodturner, I make KZbin videos in the little spare time I have as a way of keeping my love for woodturning alive. I make over 3000 bowls per year and it gets a little boring. This video was made by request of my viewers. As for resin. I play with it too, and would call a piece of resin and wood woodturning too.

@@stevegpsych68 hahaha. Hey Steve. There are plenty food safe finishes out there. Generally I use shellac and will top with a good safe danish oil. Shellac is commonly used in food, it gives shine to the votings on sweets and the like. It’s completely food safe. As for shop bought finishes you need to check with the manufacturer. Bees wax, mineral oil, walnut oil (risk of allergies) are all food safe options. Some danish oils are good safe and some arnt. Just play about and see what works well for you. But deal with shellac and top with wax or oil. 👍🏻

Jack, thanks again for more inspiration. Great Christmas ideas, wished we get some snow here in Clancy MT! Is that waxed shellac? I mix 1 or 2 lb. cut with denatured alcohol as a sealer but continually fight streaking I have to sand out! Suggestions? Stay well.
@JackMackWoodturning2 жыл бұрын
If it’s streaking you can add oil to the mix but I find that often doesn’t stop the streaks. I mix mine by feel with isopropanol, I have a old ice cream tub of flakes and cover with iso and keep the lid on.. stir it everyday or so for the first week.. this will give you a super thick honey type solution.. I do this as it means my flakes are already dissolved. I them top my bottle up about 1 quarter with the thick base solution and top that up with iso.. almost all the way ( you can always ad more..) what you are looking for is a sealer rather than thick finish. Apply it leave it to dry for a moment and then cut it back with fine wire wool. Apply more coats for a deeper finish.. but the last coat for me would then be danish oil or wax
@dicktorkildson97522 жыл бұрын
@@JackMackWoodturning Thanks Jack. So you are using non waxed shellac flakes? Never thought of adding oil. Just seems for me I am either putting to much on and it dries so fast there's no way I could rub it in! I have tried using brushes and wiping it on with soft rags! I do generally finish up after sealing with shellac with friction wax. Thanks and Happy Holidays.
@JackMackWoodturning2 жыл бұрын
www.liberon.co.uk/product/lemon-shellac-flakes/ This is the shellac I use and always have. It sounds to me like you mix is too thick. It should slosh in the bottle rather than be at all viscous. Also, just my opinion but don’t apply it with the lathe running.. and don’t buff it until you’ve cut it back with fine wire wool ( keep turning the wool so that it’s constantly using a fresh surface) I find it takes off excess Pryor to buffing.. 👍🏻

Those who don't know what your doing, can not come to comprehend wood working/lathes in small popup tips/tools used, etc. Reminds me when Fox began to highlight the puck during NHL Hockey games they aired cause people couldn't see the puck??? :) It never had a chance of catching on here in Canada. First we had Don Cherry on CBC, Second, We grew up watching it, huddled around friends and family, glued to our TV sets. A couple of highschool friends and myself, tried it to experience it. Nah!!! 6:08 That warning is almost not necessary if you push the wool against the wood at the regulation four to five o'clock instead of eight o'clock. (Or anything else for that matter. Like sandpaper. Only push stuff against the workpiece at the lower rear quadrant and you will be fine.) 18:15 on the other hand would have warranted a warning that grabbing the workpiece is a great way to slice off your fingers if you failed to round over the edges properly.
@JackMackWoodturning2 жыл бұрын
This isn’t correct.. the warning is there because people have a habit of wrapping the wire wool around their fingers.. regardless of the position you place the wool to the wood if the wool catches of the chuck or live edge the wood can cause extreme laceration or even amputation.
@JackMackWoodturning2 жыл бұрын
You edited your comment and added another section about “grabbing” the spinning wood.. I feel it’s Important here to talk about the number one risk in woodturning, That is, people like you with a small amount of time spent watching KZbin and having a little go on your lathe and then Trying to give out advice as is you know the ins and outs of the whole craft.. I’v been a professional woodturner for 20 years and I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt the both points you have made are absolutely ridiculous.. the point you made about wire wool makes no sense as the issue has nothing to do with how you present the wool to the piece but everything to do with holding the wool with a loose grip so that if it gets caught it will not cause you harm. You second point shows your lack of experience turning. That steadying grip is common place in spindle turning and is not cause for concern in the slightest. Obviously you would not turn a top with a sharp point and if you did the steady grip is a delicate light touch that would cause nothing but a paper cut type injury is it was to catch a sharp edge. I can only assume you are the type of person who turns wood with gloves on completely ignorant to the devastating injuries gloves and lathes can cause. Please save the advice giving for those of us with adequate experience and learn to ask questions so that you can avoid giving advice to others that could lead them to harm.

@@JackMackWoodturning Great way to react to your viewers, Jack! Insulting your audience for pointing out you demonstrate unsafe techniques is so _avant-garde!_ Wrapping the wool around your fingers would be so blatantly stupid that I find it plausible some dipshits might actually do that even though it never ocurred to me. But if you meant to warn your viewers against wrapping the steel wool wround their fingers then the caption should of course _literally say that,_ instead of "Grip it loosely" or whatever.
@JackMackWoodturning2 жыл бұрын
I only insult the ones who need it 😉 And you do, as you don’t seem the realise that “hold with a loose grip” covers all bases.. you’d be amazed how often I have to explain the most obvious of things to these “dipshits” … oh, wait,
