Every day is a school day! I hadn't considered that it was possible to shear cut with a scraper either. Thanks for sharing Carl.

Carl - Very informative, thanks. I wouldn't mind seeing the scraper used on the inside of a bowl. I obtained a “pile” of tools from a gent retiring from the craft including a big scraper such as you displayed. Anyway, I had a rather spectacular catch with it which resulted in bowl bits heading this way, tool launched that way and I was somewhere in the middle in the fetal position. If only I had videoed it …

Great demo Carl, very helpful, and well explained, the scraper is a much more versatile tool than most people think, I'm still practicing with it, but will get there....eventually! Take care Mike

Good video Carl. For some reason, I can never seem to get anything but catches with my scrapers, no matter if used on spindle or face work. Last time I used one (~8 months ago) was on a gorgeous bowl that blew up when I tried to even out the interface between the bottom & side - relegated the scrapers to the unused tool area; I'd rather sand than blow up nice wood. None of the guys in my turning club can help and so they sit. (On the plus side, I have some basically new tools to regrind. :) )

I will do another video cleaning out a bowl. Is it chatter or is the tool bouncing? If your to far over the tool rest it will bounce and not leave a clean cut.

Thanks, I've had a few blow up too. I got the big one for bowls it helps a lot with chatter. I still need to get a flat bar tool rest I think that will help a lot too. New tools yeah!

Shear cut with a scraper, would never have thought of it. From what I have read, all advice is to keep the tool flat on the rest. Seems holding at an angle and having a light touch does a good job. Will try it today. Right now I am working on a very hard piece of maple which I have just gotten round. I mostly turn softwood, old seasoned redwood and some pieces from firewood, like lodgepole pine or pinion pine. I would add a picture if I knew how.

I found that if I put a two or three foot long handle on a scraper, it doesn't catch as easily. If I turn it into a negative rake and use it as an abrader, it just plain works. I have to get desperate to use a scraper though.

I've only recently begun to use scrapers, but I'm loving them. The one problem I have is that when cleaning up tool marks on a bowl, I cannot seem to get rid of them in the inside near the rim. I ride the bevel the whole way down on a final cut, but it almost feels like the heel is leaving little valleys in the side. When I try using the scraper there, I get too much chatter for it to do any good. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I just watched a video by Brian Havens on negative rake scrapers. The scrapers that you demonstrate have a bevel on one side where negative rake scrapers are on both sides. Do you use a negative rake scraper, and if so for what, and if not why not?
@CarlJacobsonthewoodshop
@CarlJacobsonthewoodshop 8 жыл бұрын
+Raymond Medeiros Hi Raymond, I reground one of my scrapers to a negative rake, but cloud never get it to cut right. I know a few people that use them, and are very happy though.

Informative video. I find this tool is the one that I avoid at all costs because of all the catches I've gotten. I think too my the important part with a scraper is light cuts, correct?

Carl, what kind of wheel on your grinder?
@deemstyle
@deemstyle 10 жыл бұрын
I'm a new turner and I've really learned a lot from your channel- thanks! You mentioned that when you hold the scraper at an angle, it was called a sheer cut. You didn't mention what the cut is called when you keep the scraper flat on the rest. Also- why would you choose one over the other? Finally- I'd really like to know what kind of grinding wheel is on your grinder for sharpening. Thanks so much!

im not sure why, but i recently sharpened my scraper, and it seems to be extremely aggressive and prone to catching. i was turn a segmented pencil holder out of oak and ash. Im thinking its because of the wood, but still, any tips?
@CarlJacobsonthewoodshop
@CarlJacobsonthewoodshop 9 жыл бұрын
howycwap Sorry for the late reply, the comments have been messed up. It's probably the wood, are you turning a lot of end grain?
@howycwap
@howycwap 9 жыл бұрын
Well it was freshly sharpened and I was turning a segmented piece, so no endgrain. But it was catching, and i found it odd. Ive used it since on some walnut. it worked a bit better but it was still a litttttle bit on the agressive side.
