In this video I talk about how the bowl gouge works and cuts. Proper tool rest height and lathe maintenance. I just got a new diamond wheel and I love it no more dust.

I've said it before Carl but you are great. The tips with the bowl gouge are very valuable. I always fight to get that nub out of the center. It is so frustrating. Great video....great.

Hi Carl, I have the old version of the Delta midi, and it has the same motor arrangement. To prevent shavings from building up on the motor, I made a sheet metal trough that slides inside the bedways to catch chips. I can stick a vacuum crevice tool in there, or slide the trough out from the end of the lathe. Also, the end of the trough at the headstock is closed off to minimize chips in the pulley chase.

I've watched lots of bowl gouge videos as I am trying to beef up on them. I don't use them much because I am unlearned. However, your video had a few tips (that other videos didn't have) that are helping me. Thanks!

Hi, You can use the spindle gouge for small things like cups and boxes. The bowl gouge it much more efficient for doing bowls though.

Another great video Carl! I love the close-up view of the gouge cutting. Sometimes it's hard to tell exactly how a person is holding the tool in some videos. One thought I had, and you may already do this, is that when I'm blowing out any electronics I always turn the pressure down on my air nozzle before doing this. I have seen solder joints on circuit boards get loose from using too much air pressure. Great tip though, alot of people don't realize how much dust can get in there. Tim

Thanks Carl, you answered two questions without me asking,-- the nub of wood, and the spirals from cutting to fast. Tell me, is that bowl gouge of yours old and worn down, or was it made with such a short fluted area? Never seen one like it before! Anyway, great stuff, and keep 'em coming. Cheers now, Bob - UK.

I didn't dig through the comments here so I don't know if it has been brought up and please I mean no disrespect at all. You are by far much more experienced in this field than I am as well as with your own equipment. I wanted to point out that a morse taper works as a friction fit and I would never recommend putting wax on the taper. I know you know what it is and how it works and I trust that you likely do this for your own reasons which work for you, but in general I would want the average viewer to know that they really shouldn't be putting anything on a morse taper. I see the video is older but I am just now watching.

I adjusted the belts on m Delta midi to highest speed for my new PSI Beall buffing system. With the belts in that position the indexing wheel rubbed against the side inside the 'box" area. It was extremely difficult to undo the belts from the high speed position. Now I use can't use that position of the belts so I am not able to get the high speeds which are not that high to begin with. I just wanted to share that with you. (I know I will never be competent to get a Robust like my friends with adjustable headstock and fold-down tailstock!

It looks like you're holding a wookie at the end... ;) You ever make or play with an oland tool? I've gotten to like it more than a bowl gouge, plus they cost next to nothing to build. (Coincidentally, I just made another tonight - cost was $2 for a bit, 1/3 of an $11 piece of steel rod, and a piece of cherry firewood. :) )

carl what rpm should you be on when hollowing out the bowl
@CarlJacobsonthewoodshop

jeff oldham It depends on the wood Jeff. I normally run a small bowl like this around 1,000 rpms but that's only if there's no defects.
