I've ordered the gloves, what you said makes total sense, I'm looking forward to not getting a jet of hot wood shaving burn me any more. BTW, if any left handed turners want a right glove I have one I can send to you for postage only :)

Thank you for writing and sharing, Simon. And yes, LOL, I have a few right hand gloves too. Happy Turning!

Very nice video. Always enjoy your tutorials and look forward to their publication. One thing to add to your comments regarding cutting a rough hunk of wood is to look for the "ghost" image of the spinning wood and cut that image as you would the solid image of the smooth bowl. The "ghost " image results from the high spots spinning through your visual field leaving an after image that is seen as a ghostly shadow of the spinning wood. Once I was able to see that "ghost" image, roughing out a hunk of wood to a bowl blank became a breeze. Keep up the good work. DitchWood Turning.

One technique for roughing out pieces when first learning to use a gouge is to put a couple of parallel lines across the tool with a permanent marker and use them as a visual guide to see that you are not pushing the tool into the piece as you move it across the tool rest ...

I use weight lifting gloves they are fingerless tight and padded absorbing shock. Give them a try.😊

Another kind of glove you could use are “Short Finger Sailing Gloves”. They are made of various materials, sometimes within one glove, but I think for turning get either cow or goat hide (goat is softer). Also because these are designed for gripping lines the palm side is rougher (grippier) which could be perfect for less fatigue for your hands.

What do you do with all the residual saw dust and wood chips?

Hi Kent. Thanks for all the videos - I’m learning a lot. Quick question - I am new to woodturning and have been using a 1/2 inch bowl gouge but I am struggling to finesse and clean up the tenon with it - it’s a bit too bulky. You talk about a ‘spindle detail gouge’ a lot to do that. I can’t seem to find anything of that description for sale. I can see spindle gouges or detail gouges but not spindle detail gouges - are they the same thing? Can you share what size you use please? And do you have a preferred make/shape/bevel angle for that? Thank you

Question for you Kent. My Grizzly lathe does not have a hand turn wheel on the motor, but i know that rolling a bowl blank onto the thread of the lathe can tear out the thread. Any suggestions? Thanks!
@jackthompson50927 ай бұрын
Make one. I made one for my fifty year old delta lathe. I used wood threads to screw it onto the outboard spindle threads.
@AlexDMast7 ай бұрын
@@jackthompson5092 theres no place for one. The lathe is built to not have one. I did think of that thought but i dont think it would work
@robertnorthrup19147 ай бұрын
You can add a homemade hand wheel to your Grizzly lathe. The place where the hand wheel would be placed has a left-hand thread but finding a left-handed threaded bolt or screw can be tricky. But remember if you do you loose access for your knockout tool to pop out drive centers. So ya, it can be done or just live with it as is.

Why does my tenon keep breaking off the bowl?
@TurnAWoodBowl3 ай бұрын
Adam, Well it could be several issues. If the chuck was overtightened and cracked the tenon. If the wood is dry and brittle, If too much latereral pressure is applied to cuts, you can snap the tenon. See if one or a combo of these help. Happy Turning!

Metal machinists are taught not to wear loose fitting clothing when turning, long sleeves or gloves. Hence the reactions.
