Absolutely love this piece. Reminds me of some of the things my grandfather made, he didn't use a lathe because he was a poor farmer in West Virginia with 9 children (1927 was when my dad was born and he was #9), so his creations were for functionality and everyday use, but nonetheless very beautiful and are now hand-me-downs in the family over 90 years later.

I was thinking that too but, I've seen some of the other similar channels saying the issue with that is the bark would separate from the wood at some point. Not right away but he would need to have resin over the bark and onto the wood to give it the chance.

The Cutest Brit in all of England. I could listen to his accent all day. And the Making is a Bonus. I went to KZbin to study British accents. I had shared one of Nick's vids on my facebook where I have 3,000 followers and I made a comment that I loved Nick's Yorkshire accent. (Really, I thought that was why he was making such a big deal out of Yorkshire Grit... LOL.) So right away, Ana, a good friend of mine on Facebook corrected me saying the accent is NOT Yorkshire, but Southern. So this was all new to me and I started researching British accents on KZbin. It was fun and fascinating. Such a smallish area with so many very different accents (some of which I would need subtitles to understand). When I attempt to do a British accent (with my American ear), I start out sort of automatically Irish and then it quickly morphs into a really bad Scottish/Welsh mish mash. But I love doing it. End of my accent rant.

Good job Nick. Lovely finish on the wood. Were you not tempted to go for a semi-live edge? Enclose all the bark in that lovely clear epoxy resin - then mill down. I humbly suggest its a win win win win: 1 - You get a smooth balanced load on the lathe, 2 - you won't lose any of the bark spinning off on the lathe, 3 - you get the live edge of the wood and 4 - you get the practicality of a uniform edge on the top. Like what you did with your badge - it certainly won't be coming out now.

Loved it! One of your best projects yet! I know you don't do a lot of big projects, but when you do they are fabulous! Next time you tackle a piece of wood that big however, you might consider a following system so you can get two to three bowls out of the same hunk of wood instead of turning everything into glorious beautiful shavings. And the fact that you left the crack in the resin goes so well with the rest of the piece. Job well done!
