Stunning bowl Erik, and a very well explained and presented two part definitive guide to turning a square bowl. In my view a must watch, for anyone that wants to know the right way to approach and succeed at achieving one. Thank you so much for taking the time to make it. Take care Mike

Thank you so much Scott, I am glad you enjoyed, and I took down that video for several reasons, I am running out of space on my google account and I am constantly modifying my mixture and its ratios depending on what I am able to get and what wood I am sealing and the desired finish, high med low gloss. Thanks again for watching and enjoying and especially for commenting.

Beautiful piece of work, Eric. I am always amazed by those wood turners who post videos. I am a reasonably good turner but I don't think I would have the patience for videoing and turning; "it's like chewing gum and walking" something I've never been good at. Anyway, thank you for posting.

Hey. Great job and super helpful video. The thing I liked best is that you didn't mute the sound of the chisel on wood and play music. Too many lathe turners do this in their videos, but listening to the sound is really important so rookies like me know what it supposed to sound like!! I have found myself stopping because the sound wasn't right only to find there was good reason. So again, thank you.
@ErikAnderson17 жыл бұрын
Thanks Adam! It is all about listening to the wood while turning very good observation and thank you. Sometimes i use music when I am fast forwarding the video because there is no sound in video once I speed up as much as I usually do.

Great piece of art Erik. I am still impressed by the square bowls. I think I have to practice on the round ones first and there is still the problem to find a way to do this without a proper scrollchuck, well I'll see what I can do, but I think I'll do some egg cups, or candle holders as exercise first (actually a lot of them). Happy Easter time with your loved ones. Greetings from Good Old Germany Peter Oh, almost forgot, at the end I thought I'd watch the wrong channel, what an outstanding performance of you making the music! Love this one.

I've seen Square work done with a strobe light for better viewing. You can match the speed of the strobe to your lathe and you can almost make it look as if your piece of wood is standing still. It really helps in being able to see how your piece of wood is coming along.

cool idea Keith. I always watch the ghost image which is like a spinning strobe. Thanks again Keith

Good looking bowl, Erik. A sharp block plane or spoke shave would reduce the amount of sanding required to remove the saw marks from the edges. Take care Bob
@ErikAnderson110 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bob, I will try the block plane idea although with this oak on the end grain sides it is very prone to splitting at the corners and I would be a bit worried about grabbing the edge and having it split off.
@bobham510 жыл бұрын
Erik Anderson Hi, Erik: When doing the end grain edges use a very light cut and plane from the corners toward the middle to avoid chipping out the corner. Do the end grain edges first and then when you do the long grain edges it will leave the corners crisp. It shouldn't take more than a pass or two to clean up and milling marks. Take care Bob
@ErikAnderson110 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bob that is a great tip. I will try that because I have some very nice old and well sharpened block planes and a very nice older scraper and burnisher. Thanks so much for commenting and giving me some new ideas.

One of the hard things to do with headgear like the Trend is to make yourself heard. Have you been able to add a mic to the gear? If not, what is the secret to being heard by the audience? If you have a mic on the gear, how did you integrate it with the headgear and make it functional and not a hindrance?
@ErikAnderson110 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rich, Actually I used my outside voice and tried to speak up while in my headgear and when possible or when I remembered to I pulled the trend off to speak between turning and commenting. My camera has a very sensitive stereo mic as well.
