During the Greene & Greene coffee table class I attended a few weeks ago, William Ng gave us an impromptu lesson in scraper sharpening. Fortunately I had my Flip Cam at the ready and captured this tutorial for your enjoyment.

Wow, the best description of sharpening a scraper that I have yet to come across. Thank you for making it so clear and simple.

Mr. Ng I think you are a genius , I've been watching you for 2 years & I have a master craftsman wood turner trying to teach me to sharpen the card scraper. I worked 2 hrs. this afternoon & still didn't get it sharp. Maybe I'll try it again after church just like you did & see what happens. I love your videos.

Sensei - thanks for yet another SUPER instructional!!! If I may toss a hint for your consideration - as you are clearly so influentially positioned by your classes and your EweToob exposure - I'd like to point out something that has helped me in my sharpening endeavors: SEEING what you're doing to that edge under a microscope! Clearly YOU know by intuition and experience, but for future demonstration purposes, some sort of super-macro camera or USB-microscope might allow your students to connect the dots quickly. Nothing like TOOLS to make the job easier - unless it's KNOW-HOW - and I gotta say - it's delightful to watch you demonstrate BOTH!

@ronemarshall Well I wouldn't say any of them are "better" so much as they are just different ways of getting the job done. If you don't like sanding, a scraper and/or a smoothing plane will make you much happier. But a smoothing plane can be problematic on wild or figured grain. That's the beauty of the card scraper; its very easy to use.

Wow - Thanks. That was a great demonstration! It's amazing how many bad (as in completely technically incorrect) videos are out there showing "how to use a scraper"

William Ng is clearly an amazing woodworker, and this method obviously produces quick and excellent results for him - but I've tried it his way, and I can't for the life of me get it to scrape shavings! All I get is dust. If I follow a few other methods and get a more obvious burr, then I can get shavings - but as he eluded to, it doesn't last long before needing to be touched up again...

Hi, I have never used a burnishing tool to hone my card scraper. I’m tempted to use my old kitchen Wusthof honing steel. What do you think? It’s no longer used in food preparation. Thanks

An old engineers scraper makes a great burnisher.
@mikebetts2046

+Jim Davis, I made my burnisher many years ago from a chunk of 1/2" HSS drill rod. I chucked it up in my wood lathe and gave it a very nice polish then stuffed it into a wood handle.Use as large a radius as you can get so as to not be so abrupt in the way it extrudes the steel of the scraper (it is more gentle on the edge).

I followed your instructions to the letter and yet I could not achieve the edge that you get. When I scrape all I get is sawdust not shavings like you. Don't know how you can help but I'd appreciate anything you could offer thank you

Is it better to go ahead and just use a scraper than a hand plane and sander then? I'm getting into woodworking and have bought 4 sanders now and they work great but if there is a quicker and better way then I'm all for getting on the same page with that lol.

On a different note. Did Japanese carpenters traditionally use card scrapers or an equivalent tool?

Wow, sometimes youtube is creepy. Just yesterday I had a scraper in my hands. I didn't know how this thing is called (not even in german, which is my native language). I just found it in an old toolbox and used it to remove some glue residues. It did OK (and I doubted if I used it correctly - now looks like I did) but definitely could have been sharper. And what happens today? "Scraper Sharpening" ... 2nd entry in the related list of one of your other videos. Spooky!

@woodwhisperer 11 жыл бұрын
Really it's the same methodology. But instead of dragging a straight edge against the stone, you're rotating a curved one. It's hard to get every part of the curved scraper sharpened to perfection but you just do your best and then leave the rest to the burnisher.
