There isn’t anyone that fells the timber, cuts out the shape, and finishes them off, and sells them but Mr. Kurosawa wants to be the first and is learning the techniques of all sides
In order to take care of the limited supplies of Aizu paulownia, Kurosawa producing the best with limited materials and puts effort into mending old geta.
To complete his geta, Kurosawa visits a workshop in the town of Aizubange to meet Yamauchi Kazuo, one of the few people in the country that can finish geta by hand. Though machine processing is more common, Kurosawa prefers handcrafting and comes here to learn the technique
He says: "Paulownia geta is a real Japanese tradition. So making them by hand is important to me as a Japanese person. I think it would be a shame to live in a world where they’re all machine-made. That’s the main reason I’ve come here to learn all I can"
Here a young man preserves the tradition and brings it into the future

(The fifth generation of Kurosawa Woodwork)
Teacher: Kurosawa Takashi (黒澤 孝司さん)

I've always been curious about these traditional footwear. But until this video, I always assumed it took more skill wearing and walking in them than making them. This video taught me otherwise, and this has been an engrossing experience. Ganbatte, Kurosawa san!

I love that they glazed over his simple mistake and didn't grill him over it unnecessarily.

I didn't think it was a simple mistake, I work with Japanese and they would have broke my balls. Of course I am in an industrial situation and not in crafts. Sure wish I could go spend several months in someone's wood shop there... to get my balls broken!

@@sunconuresolar2658 Well, it is harder to make wooden objects by hand than by cnc these days. The tradition is cute to keep, but heavily unnecessary in a business practice in this day and age. Sure it can still be done but the fear of change in tradition is a killer for traditions. I still say it is a simple mistake.

I wish we had more of this in America. I would spend the rest of my life going from craftsman to craftsman learning.
