I love the idea. You could probably put a back on one side or at each ends so that when you put the lid on it travels better.

I think a way to attach the lod to the bottom would be a great addition. Particularly if you would use the lid when travelling. You don't want to lose that

Awesome job! Funny thing is I was just designing something similar last night... I wanna make a tool cabinet with a vertical “drawer” that holds the auger bits. But that drawer can be removed and set on the bench. You gave me some ideas, thanks

I don't know why I thought of this, but maybe on the bottom of the bit set. Cut a circle out with a hole saw. And put the piece back in so you can twist it so it makes a leg so it doesn't fall forward or backwards?

Interesting video. I have quite a few old auger bits that badly need some TLC and a new case. I don't see why I couldn't adapt this to square shank bits. Thanks for the inspiration.

That would be fun. maybe make a tapered top or base to match the graduating length.

Thanks for the video. I’ve been looking for bit holders for a while. I felt dumb because there’s nothing decent out there and I thought, maybe everyone is leaving them in the drawer

Looks good! Just messaging to point out that you could have done the stepped design like the others, if you stepped the depths of the holes. I have a bunch of old bits, but I'm thinking I'm going to do them in some kind of folding/tool roll. I like the idea that someone else suggested of adding "sides" (maybe in leather) to your design. Either way nice job!

Nice work, James. If the cap is only to protect the sharp ends while traveling, why not just make a box to fit over them and have it sit in a rabbet around the top of the base? This would serve to protect the flutes from getting dinged as well as the cutting edges.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 жыл бұрын
the problem is with he tight tolerances on those caps it would be almost impossible to get them all into their caps.

@@WoodByWright I think by "cap" he meant the wooden top you made. He meant you could make a lid out of wood like a 5 sided box that fits over all the bits and goes all the way down to the base, instead of having a place for each bit in the lid. You could add a chunk of foam in the lid to keep the bits from jiggling around during travel.

I like your vids. Question, why are you not using a shooting board for your end grain? Just curious.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I prefer to just freehand shoot. It's faster and doesn't require me to set up the shooting board. If it's just one board I usually do that. if it's a handful of them then I'll bring out the shooting board.

Love the project. But watch out for that leather - it appears to be kip, a bit thin and also a somewhat loose flesh-side structure. I would use a 3-4 oz latigo for both better strength and better elasticity. (Worked with leather for more than 40 years.) But now I know how to build my own holder, so thanks!

Yup these are just temporary patterns. I talk about that a bit more in the how to version of the video. It was what I had lying around the better stuff will be coming in shortly. this is the leather I use for clamp faces and vice jaws.

The lid being separate makes it easy to lose. Maybe lid that nested under the base, OR a second set of slots in the straps to strap the lid to the base while I. Use so it does not wander off.

Along with this idea, place the lid down first and put some more holes in the leather where they match up with the base. Although it will be very tall.
