When you live and try and woodwork in Australia. "It's very dense and a lot of fun." Australian... "Oh God I'm just trying to make something without everything going to hell and having to sharpen every 10 passes of a plane" We'd die for this "poplar" we hear speak of

We do have native species of pine, cyprus and ash, as well as she-oaks(not true oaks but they're a similar hardwood); much easier to work with. In saying that Red Gum is still on the low end of hardness in terms of our commercially available hard woods, then there's the rare accacia's which are said to break chisels at 5 paces...

This is one of the local timber I use often along with jarrah and black butt and sheoak. Reverie grain is common in red gum and also a lot of relatively new regrowth local timber that we are getting now. For hand planning I use vertas bevel up planes with 40 degrees blade angle plus the bed angle of 12 degrees cutting angle 52 degrees. And throat angle at about 3/32" . It took me a while to come to this but now I am there I can plane against the grain without tear out. One thing about these woods is how well they polish up. Going to 400 grit then an oil a wax finish. Pure tung oil is best as linseed oil will darken the wood a fair amount. Love your channel.

Ah redgum! The dedicated among us make some beautiful things out of it. Really gnarly trees. I was once canoeing on the Murray River up on the New South Wales / Victorian border. We pulled up for lunch and casually sat on a redgum log. It was only after I'd finished lunch that I realised it was a fallen branch 6ft+ diameter and there was plenty more fallen (er) "branches". The tree that it came off was still standing and must have been ancient. It was huge and twisted. We hustled out of there pretty quickly. Now I've finished my story James, you'd better go sharpen your tools again! Apparently the high silica content prevents them from rotting when the area floods.

We used to use redgum as firewood in the house I grew up in; burns very slow and kept our house warm in winter nights. Not to say I wouldn't work with it though, haha. If you really want a challenge you could move up to Spotted Gum(which has beautiful contrast to it) or even torment your tools with Ironbark or Greybox.

I’m a carpenter 1st... “Woodworker” 2nd.... Building a HUGE barn for the owner of the local strip joint we cut down ALOT of Gum trees....he had to pay extra to have them milled as the local boys did not even want to run it through their machines.... They came back green,16’, the 2”x12”s took 3 men to carry, “stout men!” all 3 grunting! I clicked this video just to see what I already know, someone is fixing to have a day far more difficult than it should be. My employer sent me to the bundle to give him an estimate on a gun cabinet made out of the stuff, I took a plane,a draw knife, and a skill saw to test the stuff... It took me 3 minutes to call him up and say: “Not a F’n chance in hades!” That stuff is a nightmare ! 😏 and having a sense of humor the guy came out one day with 10 $100 bills, Offered it to any man who could sink a 16 penny nail in one of the culls in one hit..... I have to admit it was fun watching the laborers hastily mutilate their fingers attempting the absolutely impossible. To hell with the gum tree! You good sir are bold and masochistic. Hats of to ya! 😂😁👍🏽 Now I’ll click play and watch your inevitable pain.

The description says Corymbia calophylla. It is more likely to be Eucalyptus camaldulensis - river red gum which has a red coloured wood. As others have said it is used for railway sleepers (now replaced with concrete), house stumps (now concrete too), fence posts and fire wood. It has, I think, a relatively short fibre which makes it break relatively easily when flexed, so no good for handles for hammers, axes, spades etc.

I have a couple of turning tools handle made from fiddle back redgum ,beautiful looks great with polished brass ferrules( a found tree stake) and a carving mallet turned from a solid piece of redgum. (firewood) I grew up in an area where our bank counters and pub bars were made from huge slabs of red gum. I also had an uncle that used blocks of redgum as bearings for a 2 inch shaft on a huge land roller that was towed behind a tractor still going strong .

Similar density to blood wood. Looks beautiful! My tip for drilling holes, is to drill a small pilot hole with a twist bit first to get the centering right, then progressively widen to the correct dimension. It's easier on the wood because it doesn't have to tear the fibers apart at the middle of the hole, or drill out the full amount of material to get through. Plus if you get the tiny twist bit centered and through, then you can drill from either end to head off the tear out before it happens. Same with scoring the wood. Lol I always forget to do that, and just mark the piece with pencil and start cutting. I have developed my sawing technique to compensate and get less chip outs, but I have to force myself to remember the proper technique is to score first!

I’m currently building a pair of English style field gates out of blue gum, it’s even harder than red gum. Fun is not a term that comes to mind too often when working on them. What I would give to be able to get my hands on some nice, soft and easy to work oak.

If they were railway sleepers, they were probably Jarrah from Western Australia (Eucalyptus Marginata). They use it for jetty pylons, sleepers and in the 19th century even paving the streets of London. Very hard and with a high level of silica. Absolutely kills sharp blades.
