The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Early 1960's? Woody was simply incredible, and he really got talent and turned them loose. Fastest, hottest and wildest version of Caldonia I've ever heard. The excellence is really hard to comprehend.

Holy Smokes...WOW. 3 sax solos, 1 mute trumpet, 2 'bone solos, Woody, BASS, and the drum fill...The bass player is absolutely killing it at this pace...just an incredible performance by the entire orchestra...It's a hair raising, wild, tight, insane arrangement, HARD swinging rendition of a classic.

Yes. Other trumpets are Paul Fontaine, David Gale, Chase, Jerry Lamy. Billy was a HOOT. Crazy Oklahoma guy. And Lamy sounded just like Chase on split lead.

This was probably the greatest of Woody's later bands.I got to hear them a couple of times. Phil Wilson has the trombone solo. Bill Chase (big guy in the center of the section) is playing lead trumpet, was a very special guy. Split to lead his own very exciting small band called "Chase," heard them on Rush Street. He died in a small plane crash not long after. This was from the '60s, maybe '64-'65.

Hadn't seen this one before. Looks like the '63 Herd. Bobby Jones is the first tenor solo. Don't recognize the other two. I guess Sal Nistico had the night off. Phil Wilson and Henry Southall, trombones. Billy Hunt is the trumpet solo. At the Metropole, bands played in a straight line.

Metropole did not have a lot of room...Saw Gene Krupa with a 5 pc band, and THEY were cramped in....Everybody but the drummer stood in a line.
