I was privileged to have seen Woody and the Thundering Herd in the early 1970's at La Bastille in downtown Houston Old Market Square.I was in high school and played the trumpet in marching and stage bands.The music, talent,and memories will never be forgotten.

Wow! How did I miss this great event? In Houston I saw Mr. Herman at The Summit, with a double bill with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and in smaller venues...Rockefeller's and The Windmill Dinner Theater. I still treasure the LP that he signed for me.

It's unfair to. Call it *woodie's fanfare...". It's actually performed by woodie's band. In the intro, he introduced in a manner that shows woodie as a stand up guy, as he credits the composer as Aaron Copland. I believe he was the only bandleader to play this, it is normally heard at symphony concerts and brass ensembles.
@pkiler Жыл бұрын
@Bill Pearce Thanks, yes, I'm very familiar with Copland, and I love the big band adaptation. I've always loved the intersection between Jazz and Classical! 😀

Such a great performance! I played the bass trombone and had a solo on this tune. It is my favorite Woody Herman Tune of all time.

Woody Saxist DAVE RIEKENBERG (left-hand end of sax section) says this had to be in late 1984 (not 1985), because lead trumpeter Don Downs left Woody’s Band at the end of ‘84, after The Herd’s 3-week run in Reno with Tony Bennett.

Not one of Woody's best bands. I've never heard so many clams. Buddy Rich would have been furious on the bus afterwards. (How many of you get that joke?)

No, what’s bad/sad/etc. is you writing like you know Woody and/or the band. Go back to playing Nintendo.
@BillSmith-rx9rm Жыл бұрын
@@rmo52 well first, I've never owned nor played a Nintendo or any other video game in my entire life. So your assumptions are way off base. Secondly, we all see what we see. I don't have to "know" Woody or the band to see what I see. So once again, your argument is tenuous.
