I live out in the west and have no connection to the Jets or any other nfl team--I guess the Raiders or the Broncos would be my "local" team, if 500+ miles away counts as "local"--but I've spent a fair bit of time in NY and NJ over the years, and I even had the enormous good fortune to have witnessed the butt fumble live in a bar in Sag Harbor. I know and have known plenty of Jets fans, but I'm a tourist myself who's just here to witness the train wreck of another Jets season. So with that disclaimer, I say: Jets fans need to stop supporting this team for a while. I know that's antithetical to the average Jets fan who takes a grim sort of pride in sticking with their team even and in some ways especially because it's a damn disaster, the way Red Sox fans used to, and Maple Leafs fans still do. But when I hear about Woody Johnson--the football team owner, not the gay porn star--doing shit like making personnel decisions based on Madden stats probably conveyed to him by his teenage sons, sons who are in the locker room after games(!), I think it's clear that the man and his style of ownership either need to totally go, or at least take a big step back and permanently become a hands-off sort of owner. And empty seats combined with unsold team merch are the only avenue fans have for forcing that sort of change, besides maybe producing evidence of egregious, continual sexual harassment and general workplace misconduct (and even that wouldn't be enough if an owner had the favor of Sir Roger, the Lord High Commissioner for Life). So as much as I know Jets fans don't want to do it, I really think they need to drop the season tickets, stop buying team merchandise, and turn off the tv. Tank revenue, tank ratings, and then maybe, MAYBE, they won't have to see their team tank yet another season so they can draft another quarterback whom they can fail to develop, then cut or trade him, then tank another season, draft another quarterback, etc., &c., in perpetuum et ad usque mortem.
