Yes! I was in the MJF High School all stars in 1979. When I was in the all-Stars 1979, we rehearsed for an entire week. Getting closer to the fest, the big cats started showing up. We were on lunch and were given a per diem and I was heading off to get a sandwich and some dude was waving at me across the parking lot, yelling "Hey you sound great man!" It was Woody Shaw! He was so far away that I didn't recognize him until I got closer. I couldn't believe it! Woody was our hero in the band. When I got closer, I about lost it. Here was the greatest cat in the world and all he wanted to do was talk about my playing. One of the greatest moments in my life.

I listened to Woody Shaw Quintet play this live in Kolkata India in 1983. It was great. I searched for this because of nostalgia. The lineup at Kolkata was : Woody Shaw Kirk Lightsey, Steve Turre, Stafford James, and Ronnie Burrage.

Yes, Woody Shaw = innovator . I was fortunate to get to see this group when they came to Munich Germany in 1979 and played at a club called thte Domicile. This still sounds as fresh as ever. Thanks for posting it!

Picked up on Woody Shaw after listening to an album "Black Renaissance", where he plays with Hary Whitaker (piano), Azar Lawrence (sax) and others, if anyone out there have not heard that album yet - it is a must, and probably one of Woody Shaw's most spectacular (non classic jazz) performances You got to love this man! Thank you Woody!!

This was such a great band - in college I used to catch them whenever I could at home on the west coast and in music school when they were at the vanguard. Woody Shaw's intensity was infectious. That band and the iterations with Tony Reedus, Mulgrew and Steve Turre was such a highlight of my music education. Kept us up nights transcribing solos.

This has got to be one of the greatest bands in the history of jazz. Dayum, that Carter Jefferson only made one album, not nearly enough!!!

A GREAT HARD BOP BAND! - Ronnie Mathews a highly underrated piano player - Carter Jefferson (a monster on tenor) died way to soon - James and Lewis finish out the rhythm section - and what can you say about Woody Shaw - a sad commentary on drugs ruining what was a brilliant career and dying way to young because of his issues - A GREAT HARD BOP BAND! - coachroche

What a trumpet sound!! Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker and Miles Davis are my favourite trumpet players. Woody is an advance player, futuristic sound, smart and sharp edge solos, and a great band. I am a fan of Blackstone Legacy, Unity from Larry Young, The Moontrane, Rosewood and Steppin Stones. Thanks fot this video! We need more WS videos online!

The only guys I've heard who come close to Woody are Freddie Hubbard and Theodore "Fats" Navarro. That's just my opinion. Woody is still my all-time favorite...the king of wide intervals.
