I saw Stardust in the theater when I was in high school. As I did Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters, Bananas, and...well all of his films. I saw it years before I knew anything about Fellini's 8 1/2. I loved it then and it's still my favorite film by Allen. And that says a lot as I believe Annie Hall and Hannah are works of genius. I've probably watched Stardust Memories 300 time. Not kidding. And once I learned about Fellini's work, I loved it and loved Stardust even more.

Ah, in this little corner of the internet one is still allowed to like Woody!

One of my favorite ones. Very Fellinian. And Charlotte is superb. Woody said: "The backlash really started when I did Stardust Memories. People were outraged. I still think that's one of the best films I've ever made. I was just trying to make what I wanted, not what people wanted me to make" ❤(Woody Allen. A Retrospective, by Tom Shone, UK, 2015)

Always a joy to see your videos about Woody Allen and his work. What is the wonderful music excerpt you use at 5:20 to 5:25?

Unless I recall incorrectly, that was an excerpt from Marvin Hamlisch's score for Allen's (early, funny) movie, *Take the Money and Run.* (I find it charming too.) 😉

Roger Ebert once said of the two, that "... Fellini's movie was *about* a director bankrupt of new ideas, while Allen's is a movie *by* a director with no new ideas", and gave it only two stars out of four (thumbs-down territory). I'm pleased that Allen still considers it one of his best works, because I do too; if for no other reason than that he was brave enough to make the film he wanted to make, funny or not. (With *Interiors,* he'd already proved he could do so, and do it well.) But the black-and-white photography, the musical selections, the ensemble cast of oddballs - and of course the quips - make this an Allen movie that I find very congenial indeed. My thanks for the additional information. (I like the notion that his working title for the film was *Four.* Besides the allusion to Fellini's opus, it could have easily stood for Allen's character in the film and the three women in his "life".) 😎

The joke about "the earlier, funnier ones" was a popular critique of Allen's work at the time of the filming of "Stardust Memories". Differentiating between his more cerebral "serious comedies" like "Annie Hall" and "Manhattan" and his more slapstick, early movies like "Bananas" and "Take The Money And Run".

Thanks for this, I absolutely love this film! Something occurred to me as I watched it the other night. Allen's driver is arrested, but then he later runs into an old school friend who's a cabdriver. Why didn't Allen hire that guy to be his new driver!?

Didn’t mention an early Daniel Stern appearance or that Woody had a scene where his character was shot and killed by a crazed fan, with this happening mere months before it happened to John Lennon for real.

I don’t really like the casting and I consider this film on the weak side but I’ve watched it repeatedly since there’s good stuff and I will continue to watch it again more times
