I've been watching your videos for years. Please don't get me wrong with my following text, you are way beyond my playing ability. I love how you convey so much enthusiasm. At the same time, I notice that your hand sometimes shakes nervously when you play. That makes you very likeable and incredibly real. We all want to give our best in front of an audience and a little excitement is naturally part of that. Demos by players who are virtuosos on their instruments without ever making a creative slip-up intimidate me straight away. It's different with you, I can just about empathise with the quality of your playing and I'm not totally frustrated.

Great video, great keyboard. I recently set up my PSR 500 again which I got for my 14th birthday in 1993. I think it is actually quite impressive what it was able to do at that time and for the price point. Hey, perhaps you could do a video on iconic old machines. ;)

Great video. Detractors of arranger keyboards are missing the point. I've been on all sides of the workstation/computer/arranger user situation. I don't get the snobbery. Each have their own purpose. Arrangers are just great fun. Instant. Very useable immediately. Ready to create music. And it's how you use it as to whether its cheesy or not, thats down to the player and their level of ability and their personal taste. I use a genos 1 on stage for live performance. I generally use a mixture of either high quality midi files from MIDI SPOT or pre-record a song using the midi record function. You can attach chord sheets or with MIDI SPOT you get scrolling sheet music chords and words. Absolutely priceless for live performances. The years I toured with A4 sheets or sheet music in a folder🤣

Being a film maker myself, I notice that you are great at filming - very good lighting and quality. And you put a lot of effort in setting up camera perspectives for what you want to show. Very nice! One improvement though would be to use manual focus for the close-up shots of the keyboard, so it stays in focus. You got a lot of focus hunting between the keyboard and your hand. It's also very noticable since you seem to use a photo lens for filming, so there is noticable unwanted change in focal lenth while focusing (looks like zooming). Parfocal lenses for filmmaking don't show this unwanted behaviour, but they're expensive. As long as you don't rely on autofocus, your current lens is fine of course.

thanks for all the great feedback and compliments. i'm glad you noticed. i take your point on the AF, but in practice, manually focusing between every shot reposition would take too much time, and danger of me getting it wrong and completely losing the focus. i am using AF and setting focus lock on the panel, but as you say the hand messes it up which is pretty stupid of the camera!

@@WoodyPianoShack One possible workaround could be to use autofocus, but once it has locked onto the panel turn autofocus off - the focus point the camera has chosen should then stay in place. This works with most cameras. So the camera does all the focusing work for you, and it won't be irritated by the hand. I use this method a lot (professional cameras even have a button for this). Just don't forget to turn autofocus on again for the next shot; you proably have a AF switch on the lens or the camera to quickly do this (not sure which camera and lens you use). BTW love the presentation of the keyboard, well done. Have had my SX920 for 10 days now.

Great review and revealing the quality of the instrument. My suggestion for reviews is using another one or 2 cameras for split screen. 1, showing what you are doing like in the video, 2 what the display shows in the screen, the changes as you play. I have an older few previous generations before the SX series, yet the layout is the same. For new to Yamaha the splurge screen would help. Again you review, explanation and reveling is great.

Okay Woody, a suggestion. See if Korg will send you a PA1000 and do a comparison between the SX920 and the PA1000. Since the PA1000 is a couple of years old (it's the 'baby brother of the PA4X) the SX-920 should be better. The price here in the U.S. for the PA1000 is a couple of hundred dollars more. I'd like to see both of them together. Oh yeah, Genos 2, PA5X, SX-920, DGX-670 . . . are you ready to go 'One-Man Band' for playing out? LOL!!!!

@@WoodyPianoShack I will grant you that it's just over seven years old, being released on September 1, 2017. However, it is still active in Korg's line up and basically holds the same place as the SX-920 in the line ups. The Genos 2, being the top of the line for Yamaha only has a 76 key version, whereas the PA5X, as you are aware, has 61, 76, and 88 key versions. But, as you move down the line, the next keyboards are the SX-920 and the PA1000, respectively for Yamaha and Korg. As to 'little interest', that might be true, but both keyboards are under $3,000 USD versus closer to $5,000 for the top of the line keyboards. Anyway, it was a suggestion, and if you don't feel it's worth it, I understand.

I love it, but not sure its enough of a change over the sx900 to warrant the expense of upgrading. I would consider a change if it had better speakers and the Genos keys etc. But definitely the best choice if buying an SX for the first time.. basically I would buy a Genos 2 if it had build in speakers.

The style dynamics are a bit more than just velocity (which would be just volume), but the depth of sound (from those many samples of each instrument) is adjusted. Not sure how much use the smart chords are, but I guess useful on a 61 key format instrument, so you can shift the left/right split down to give more right hand space. You noted the Genos 2 wasn't very good with seamless transitions, but haven't commented on it for the SX920 - is it the same? You seem a lot more upbeat about the SX920 than you were about the Genos 2 - I'm not sure if you expected more from the Genos 2?

@@WoodyPianoShack in which case, the "baby Genos" moniker is likely to really stick to the SX920. In saying that, it comes too late for me to have any real interest as I decided to upgrade from the EW400 I'd been playing for 6 years, bypass the SX700/900, and jump straight to the G2 - a move I don't regret - other keyboards might do some things better, but I was already invested in the Yamaha ecosystem, so it made sense to me. Also because of the 76 key format (going back to 61 keys would have been annoying, even if I tried to fool myself that it would be okay). Anyway, the SX920 is a welcome refresh to the range for those that don't own a forklift truck to transport a G2 to gigs (so heavy - possibly my major complaint about the G2)

Question: Did Yamaha skip the USB Audio-Interface on the new models? In the manuals they only speak about USB-Midi-Interface on the 720 and 920. The SX600 had an midi AND audio-interface via USB (as your DGX 670 i think?) Would be a real bummer if Yamaha would not have included this feature on their higher prices models as it is a real selling point for me (to hear audio from my iPhone oder iPad over the speakers or headphones of the instruments for rehearsals). Any answer from yamaha?

only genos2 got the usb audio interface, missing here, very sadly, but the idea is that you use the onboard wav recorder, yamaha tell me, and it actually works pretty good.

Honestly i wouldn't buy a key without an usb audio interface if there is an alternative. For this reason (and the cheaper price) i honestly would prefer the SX600 or DGX670. In fact even the GoKeys 5 has it (and a lot of other cool features for under 500 EUR as you know because you mentioned it in this legendary video about the secret key from Roland ;-)) Cheers to Sweden from Germany 🤗

hi and thanks, split point i find i need to adjust depending on the song, then save as registration. been using "fingered bass" previously, but the yamaha demo guys convinced me to switch to left hand AI mode, don't recall the exact name. takes some practice but opens up lots of possibilities.

​@@JerryKolata Actually the "AI full keyboard" (or "full keyboard") mode is changing the chords while you are playing the melody. The "Fingered on bass" mode is always using the lower note that you are playing with your left hand as the bass note of the chord. The "AI fingered" mode on the other hand, doesn't use the lower note that you are playing as the bass note, but instead it is using as bass note the root note of the chord so it sounds more let's say a "steady" chord. This is also very useful for players (like myself) that we use inversions of the chords and this way for most of the chords we usually need just one octave and except from some "weird" chords, we don't really need to change the default split point. I have a really bad left hand so this way it helps me not to make big movements around the left keybed. You can always record your playing(as a midi) and then watch on your screen what notes every part of the style is actually playing while you are changing the chords in a different mode.

Hey Woody can i ask your advice , I have korg triton extreme and flight case , i am tired of how heavy it all is . I was considering selling and buying a korg krome and bag instead .... What are your thoughts on this ? Would it be a downgrade ? I have heard krome keybed action is bad , but i am tempted by light weight , nice screen , nice sounds .... Mainly a guitarist , playing keys only few years , forgive my ignorance !

no problem! triton was the ultimate flagship at the time, so quality and feel will be inferior on the krome. probably the krome would do ok soundwise in comparison. if you having to transport it. then yeah, I get it maybe check out new juno-d, yamaha modx as well.

there is some midi-2-style software available from yamaha. many daws will display midi data recorded from the psr as a score. in fact i think it can be done on the instrument itself and displayed on screen but probably quite primitive.

As i the sounds of super articulation 2 sounds hear white the sax its the same on the korg PA 700, 1000 and 4X keyboards also the assignable knops for the effects, the PA700 has more sounds than the 920 and sounds great and kost less,, the PA 1000 has aftertouch and the 1 finger accord you can fined on different keyboards also on the korg PA and more, but the 920 sounds oke and great styles too ........

I came to know that there is some sustain fadeout issue while trying to off the sustain button/pedal on hold. Will it be resolved by a firmware update?. I was planning to buy one, but now i am sceptical

no issues encountered by me in my casual playing so far, so i would not worry about that.

If it happens to you, make sure you are using a compatible pedal and try a factory reset as well. Some folks have issues with sustain pedals with other keyboards, and often due to using a wrong pedal.

All these styles and voices could be made available for the PSR SX-900, but they don't want it. Very bad of Yamaha. I'm sorry I can't throw away my SX900 and I can't buy and SX920. I guess once you paid for something you are no longer important. By the way excellent video!

@@cinepost it’s really hard to compare everything since they updated everything. Under the hood, it is now a Genos 1. But there’s also content from the Genos 2. All the one touch settings are reminding me on my Genos 2. Of course it is still not a top model. And there will be a lot more content coming with the Yamaha expansion Explorer and an arranger workstation is about content so this is really a huge generation. This is the main reason why I would choose one of the newer keyboards instead of buying an old one. You could also think buying a secondhand Genos 1. But there is a lot of stuff to sweeten the deal to get a SX 920 instead.

verry old school arranger (onemanband) playing i love it ......but i'm into my fifties now and heard and played enough of this -- (good)shit, always the same kind of repertoire/styles. Now realistic piano/e-piano/organ/Synth on a stagepiano-combo (Studiologiccompact NX2) and some simple step sequencer drum and bass to greate More acoustic and real-playing.... love to test the new juno D6/7/8... (ticking al the boxes i need) Statement: A arranger keyboard is nice but let say its playing with the band in box leading!!! And not the band is playing with you!!

i would not worry about the differences, now you have made your choice, just enjoy it for what it is! there will always be better and newer models, just learn to get best out of what you have, 700 is still great :)

hi.. bought the sx 920, but cannot install all the free expansion packs that my old sx 900 had, tried with the YEM also but not working

That have amazing capabilities with awesome price. I think that’s best arranger that Yamaha released in history with that price point with Yamaha expansion manager on phone capability that you can add expansion sounds from Yamaha app on phone from many countries and install on your Yamaha . That’s game changer technology that Yamaha brings in arranger so you can download and install. You don’t have this cloud local expansion sounds technology installation in any brands in world and this expansion sounds on cloud of Yamaha is expanding everyday.I don’t know why middle class like sx-920 has 3 features like super articulation plus and some new styles and A-5000 expansion pack available for that all that features are not even available in genos 2 . So what’s point of flagship genos 2 here? lol what you mean with pro user? its for one man band this one and it also can be used for a pro user woody is pro user but how much are your prepair to pay for a keyboard? 5000euro for the flagship genos2 or did you stay on synth maby roland fantom or yamaha montage i dont know but to say noob synth on this is to say all are noobs. i have tryed them all and i dont like to create my own patterns you can record patterns on this one to... you can create your own voices but its harder when you dont have slides
