actually, I offered to return it. I regularly get new synths in, and some have to go to make room. I don't have time to play them all. and it doesn't feel right to sell gear that's been donated. i'm making videos anyway, so it's great to feature new synths without me having to buy them. it's basically free rental and everyone wins, me, the brands and the audience. perhaps when korg release something new, then I'll trade up!

Sadly I don't think that Korg has significantly improved the quality of its lacklustre acoustic and electric guitar programs which aren't really much improved from those in my 1995 Trinity! Their PA series arrangers have phenomenal guitar programs so Korg obviously have the ability to improve these sounds but choose not to for some strange reason! Perhaps they're frightened that sales of their PA strangers would be affected, who knows?

As my user name implies, I am the man to come to about Piano key baby! The keybed of this Korg is the NEW-OLD PANASONIC-TECHNICS-MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC designed keybeds used in the older(1980s) Technics keyboards but with the same semi-weighted fronts that were more common on the 1990s designed keyboards from Technics like the KN flagship arrangers. The SX-A7 arranger from the late 80s had the same keys as this unit, hence your SHORT travel, but with the front steel weights of the more expensive 1990s KN series and some of the 1980s flagship Church Organs. The modern comparison is the Korg M3 workstations(61-73),which were the FIRST in the mid 2000's to readopt the old PANASONIC-Technics keys from the 1980s-90s but with slight difference: BRIGHT WHITE COLOR naturals, and MATTE TEXTURED flats and sharps black keys. The synth you compared with the Triton has the cheaper style Panasonic portable keyboards series key-strip keys that are found ironically, on most of Korg's PA series late mid 2000s keyboards, the M50,R3,PA600,PA500,most of the K controllers with full sized keys and so on. The Korg M3,Kronos, and this Nautilus use the better revised Technics keys. No Aftertouch is strange considering most keyboards just use a resistive felt strip under the front of the black keys,middle of white keys like always... Hmm. Anyway, the TRITON action you love so much is manufactured by YAMAHA and is the YAMAHA DX7 series 61 note keybed complete with the metal switches,felt strip aftertouch strip, and slightly smaller width keys with slightly LONGER key length. The Panasonic keys are slightly wider and shorter. The new Korg recent release 88 note keybeds are entirely NEW design, not copied from older engineering specs used by the 61-73 note versions from 1980s keybeds. Ok, the Kronos, has an INTEL ATOM 1.8ghz mini itx x86 computer system powered by LINUX Gentoo and custom bits including custom KORG electronics and Korg OS. The Nautilus MAY BE ARM based computer now, and from the interface I saw, seems to still be LINUX, along with the Korg OS custom bits. The ARM based cpu is found on the Raspberry Pi mini micro computer boards and is by far cheaper and runs cooler and more efficient than INTEL and so I am only assuming but a safe bet, this is the direction they went with this keyboard. Only taking it apart will tell you for sure but there ya have it! Hope this helps and sheds some light WHY the difference in these Korgs across time and space lol!

Great demo! This would be a well-done "Kronos lite" - except for two things: 1) the cost is not competitive with similar "lite" boards such as the MODX; 2) the near total loss of physical controllers. I would have even considered the 88-key version as a suitable, gig-friendly complement to my Kronos 61 - but no. Not at the announced price.
@xp50player4 жыл бұрын
I think it is worth more than the FA or MODX because of the pro linear sequencer with audio tracks, full sampling capabilities, and no drop in polyphony, effects or parts from the Kronos.
@WoodyPianoShack4 жыл бұрын
i would say the overall feel and quality is superior to the MODX, pro features like the individual outs and no wall wart and really solid metal construction. That's what you're paying the extra for, the MODX although I love it, doesn't feel premium with all that plastic. The MODX doesn't have much in the way of physical controllers either, it's comparable. But I won't lie, when removing physical controls and relying on touch screen instead, then it needs to be compensated for with much better displays then we are currently offered on synths.
@irishmusico4 жыл бұрын
Sounds great! If you get all the wavesamples for the HD1 that the Kronos has then you can load in the M1 sounds and the Trinity, Triton, 01W etc. I also loaded a D50 set of samples into my Kronos. With the Mod7 you can also load in the original DX7. Way more than 9 synths. Great demo.Thank you.
@n8goulet4 жыл бұрын
Even the Korg keyboards that followed the M1 could not load M1 sounds into them. This was a huge disappointment for me for my most beloved synthesizer. Yes, the MODX can load samples of any keyboard you want into the user memory just like the Kronos. The memory is limited to 1 gig. But keep in mind, the price of the keyboard. I sampled my favorite M1 sound which came off a $500 expansion board not made by Korg which contained rom samples. I now have it loaded into my MODX, thank Goodness. But for M1 sounds, I highly recommend Korg's VST software synth. You can get a laptop or tablet or even iPad and run all the samples & synth engines you care for. My combination of the MODX & a laptop full of soft synths seems far more powerful than just being limited to 9 engines on the Kronos. Plus many of Kronos engines I already have from Korg on my laptop as they are available as software synths. This is the route I highly recommend to people....if your not afraid of computers.

I'm impressed by the arpeggio thingy to replace the Karma engine, feel like a really nice toy! I don't know the price difference with the Kronos, but it feel worth it if cheaper! I wonder if the "seamless" transition is to compete with Roland Zencore where you can switch between patches without stopping the currently running notes. (Would love to see you demoing the Roland Fantom BTW)

yes, that's the idea of the SST, thanks for the request.

The Kronos had this seamless transistion since the introduction in 2011! In fact they where probably the first to have this feature.
@godzil424 жыл бұрын
@@gerardvanderhorst2066 That's interesting that Korg put that in front like a brand new feature. I didn't know the Kornos had that

Not quite the power of Kronos, but I think Korg sees this board as a scaled up Krome with sampling, audio recording, and 9 sound engines. You don't get all the faders and other hardware features, but most of that can be controlled via the touch screen, and the board works with MIDI controllers and of course DAW software. So to me this seems like a Krome replacement and my guess is the next Kross workstation will be ramped up as well. A Kronos 3 may be in the works, but to be honest how many people even buy those very high-end workstations anymore? The Nautilus, especially the 61 key version, seems like a good deal for live performers or studio use. For $2000 (and that price may come down to $1800 or less) you get a ton of sounds, 9 sound engines, sequencing, sampling, audio recording, great touch display, full MIDI control via hardware and DAW, and a clean, almost M1 type design. Honestly, that is not bad. Still probably more features than most people will use, but the minimalist design may appeal to live musicians, and the power under the hood with 9 engines, sequencer, sampler, audio recorder appeals to studio types. Not bad. If this price comes down to $1799 for the 61 key version it becomes a solid buy.

I think they should just upgrade the Kronos with this reskinned UI and new sounds and keep selling it.
@jwillis354 жыл бұрын
@@jgh548 I think there might be additional changes, but you might be right. To me the Nautilus is the new Krome. It's vastly superior to the Krome with 9 engines, sampling, audio, etc., yet it has a simple design without all the clutter on the board (knobs, sliders, etc.). Very clean front like the old M1.

Woody you're one of the most entertaining reviewer I've ever seen: while you play a keyboard your face is better than any other star-based evaluation system :-D .. this Nautilus deserve more in dept research... at first sight it remember me a lot of my Krome (yes Krome has less synth engines) but these specific Korg choices (less Knobs, less display, less button, ....) feel like a deja-vù!. I own also a Yamaha Modx7 that make me feel like a baby in a toycenter every time a dig into the enormous options offered by that Yamaha synth-beast... A comparison in my opinion is not needed... too much distance between this 2 machines.. and I'm very pleased that Korg did not choose to develope an anti-Modx clone or similar... Korg and Yamaha are always on my hearth (and on my setup), each for their specific distinctive strength points. Keep going well with these reviews Woody. Many thanks! :)

thanks for the awesome comment luca! it's a huge step up from the krome i think, in build quality, keys, sounds & features. although the krome does have much more proper buttons :) you carry on enjoying your modx, you're right, there is so much to explore there too!

Thank you so much for this review ! Your videos are over the top ! I never had a Workstation and I would like to buy one of these. According to you, what's the best alternative between the brand new Nautilus and an used Kronos for the same price in 2022 ? Also, the smoothness of the Kronos touch screen seems to me to be better than the Nautilus. On the Nautilus it seems to be a little bit lagging. Is this an impression or a reality? Best regards
@WoodyPianoShack2 жыл бұрын
thank you, you see right, the screen is very laggy at times, the CPU trying to keep up! don't have much experience of kronos to know if it's the same issue, but the screen is bigger, which is very important. don't forget to checkout fantom and fantom-0 before making decision.
@-Anthony.C-2 жыл бұрын
@@WoodyPianoShack You confirm what I thought. It doesn't make sense. Why remove all the controls from the Kronos if it's going to be an unpleasant touch screen to use... And yes, the Kronos screen is bigger and it also seems to work better, maybe not the same CPU? We'd need feedback from people who own both. Finally, thanks for the advice, the Roland Fantom is exceptional, it clearly has the best sequencer, as well as being very easy to use. But I don't like the Roland sounds... I much prefer Korg on this point.

I’ve owned a Korg Kronos since 2012 and just got 2017 model and they are rough at first but production power equals to that of Thor’s hammer. Especially, when an ssd and memory are added. I feel this is an easier version perhaps, worth something to those who don’t own a Kronos.

Yes, but Korg specifies these on their site : "The NAUTILUS features sounds that were sampled for the first time just for this instrument including “found percussion” sounds made by turning ordinary items into instruments to be struck ... It has the most dazzling and expansive collection of sounds EVER PUT into a Korg synthesizer !" ...

Finally a serious mid-level synth to challenge the MODX, and feels like an amazing machine here! I do love my MODX, but I have to recognize that the Nautilus seems to be a step above it. Of course it's more expensive, but stills a great mid-level option, a massive one!
@nliviumihai4 жыл бұрын
It's twice the price. It costs almost as much as a Montage/Kronos/Fantom. MODx is half the price and it's almost as good as the Montage. Sure, interesting tool, but, in my opinion, a little bit too expensive.

@@nliviumihai well pointed, it's basically US$1000 more for each model (6, 7 and 8 octaves), it's a big difference. I hope the price will drop in the future ☺️

@Wilderness Music I have not played many Yamaha P series to give you a deep comparison, but I can guarantee the piano sounds in the MODX are awesome, including some classic yamaha pianos from other keyboard (you can have mechanical noises, string resonance, pedal noises, several velocity layers...). You can also load or create new sounds, I have the "Imperfect Samples Ebony Piano" loaded in my MODX and it works awesome! I got a lot of work to fit the samples there but it worth it.

I am looking for a brand new condition M1, or T3, or T2. Are they going to reissue? I've been lucky enough to acquire a MINT, serviced, 01/W Pro, and I am looking to upgrade to a higher quality Korg synthesizer, which is the M- and T-series, of course.
@madness8556Ай бұрын
I had a T3EX for over 25 years and sn O1WFD on loan from a friend for over 15 years and they were awesome. Saying that, I actually preferred the sound of the T3EX despite it being the previous model.
@dvamateurАй бұрын
@@madness8556 I actually got the M1, T3, and T2 in not too bad of a condition. But I also got the Nautilus (73-key and 88-key weighted without aftertouch), and the whole M- and T- series ended up leaning against the wall, which is a total mess. Even the unweighted keys Nautilus ended up being unused since I got the JUPITER-X. But I guess it was all necessary for me to do to get those original Korg instruments to see what they are, and realize that the currently produced instruments are not so bad after all.
