To make mine easier I cranked the shock preload all the way down, and then compressed the rear end with a tie down (go through the rim, and then cross back across the wheel and up to the rack). My spring puller handle was in a tight spot - so I looped another tie down around it and used a piece of 2x2 wood as a lever against the back of the tire. It made pulling the spring easy - a second person to push the spring onto the hook would have made it simple. Of course - I fought with it for 20 or 30 minutes before doing these. Oh - and I had the handlebars strapped to the Ranch Hand bumper on my truck to stabilize the bike.

Thanks for the video it really helped. The springs are a killer. I used a small set of vice grips on the first spring I didn’t clamp them onto the spring I closed the jams all the way shut but allowed enough clearance so the spring would move inside the wide part of the jaws. Then used the center stand as a pivot point and pressing forward on the vice grips and lifting the center stand. The spring wouldn’t go all the way into the grove so I used a small piece of wire and gave it a yank with a large pair of vice grips. For the 2nd spring I used a large pair and used the bottom pad of the center stand as a pivot point. It stretched the spring far enough that it just needed a push to lock it in. I hope that makes sense.

Those springs are beasts. I got the inside one on using a spring puller. The second or outside spring was impossible. So, here’s an easy trick. Loop 550 cord around rear hub and run it up to the spring inside of the chain. You should have one big loop from spring around rear hub and tie it closing the loop even with the rear tire. Stick a crow bar or something to use as leverage and use the tire to push against. For some reason this lines up the spring perfectly and puts it right where you want it to be with very little effort.

Thanks so much for posting this. It really helped. Here's my 2 cents. 1. Make sure all the parts are there and correct. The first one I received had a defective spring and after I got to the springs there was no way to make them work. Had to take it all off and return everything and get another one. 2. Put the rubber stops on first with some soapy water. Makes it much easier and you don't get the grease all over. 3. I used parachute cord for the springs with a broom handle behind the rear tire for leverage. Fast and easy.

I know you did this a couple of years ago, but I just received my centre stand for my Adventure Sports model - after months of waiting due to a factory recall on the circlip. I did not want to make a booking with the dealer to install it so I picked it up to DIY install. It did not come with any instructions to install. If it wasn't for your easy to follow video I think I would still be trying to figure it out ;) Thank you.

thanks so much for the video. helpful in mounting my centerstand this morning. one wrinkle on pulling the springs tight enough to catch .... the (OEM) tubular body of the centerstand leg has a reinforcing strap welded to the top side of the tube. I clamped a vice grip the nub end of the strap to make a fulcrum point. Clamp the back end of the spring hook with second vice grip. Second vice grip will have a gap between the jaws. Get a BIG flat screw driver, insert flat tip into the gap in jaws, and lever against the first vice grip. Several tries, and had to cock the (spring grasping) vice grip to avoid fouling on rear tire, but eventually worked.

Here is an easy 'trick' for the springs. Tie a 1/4 inch diameter braided line to the end of the spring, tie the other end of the braided line around the front of the rear tire. Then slowly walk the motorcycle forward, as the wheel turns it pulls the spring. ;)

I picked up my 2017 AT DCT almost a week ago on May 31st. They had to order me a centerstand - picked it up today and thought I would install it per your video (I had already received a spring puller from Amazon as prep for the install). I watched you pull those springs on - you much have a winch built into your arm - I spent about 40 minutes fighting to get that last ¾" to actually hook the springs and gave up. I tied off the centerstand to the passenger footpeg bracket to hold it up while I drove to the dealer so they could pull the springs on. The dealer fought with it for another 40 minutes (they didn't have a spring puller). They finally got the springs attached but the spring hooks are pointed the same way on top and the bottom hooks are pretty chewed up from their prying them into place with a big screw driver. This would certainly be easier with two people (one guy pulling & another guiding the spring into place). What do I have to eat to turn my arms into a winch?
@WOODZMAN
@WOODZMAN 7 жыл бұрын
+Lance Le May Haha oh I feel your pain ! It was extremely hard to do. But I'm sure they need to be that strong to hold the center stand up. Congrats on the new DCT, I bet your loving it. Oh and the center stand is worth the trouble !

Think I figured out another way to put the spring on, especially the second one. I did not have a spring puller or wire to make one, I was using screw drivers and pput the bike on the stand liers. I got the first one on kinda easy but not the second one. After a cut hand, several choice "words", the feel of defeat and alot of sweat I put the bike on the center stand because it does work with one spring, and I went in to cool off. In my pondering I wondered what if.... I went back outside and tried to put the second spring on from the right side. there was more room and with the bike on the stand it helped even more. 2 times the screwdrivers slipped off but I was soo close. 3rd try, POP it went on and I had won the battle. Hope this helps someone.

Hi I used your vid to install mine so first off thank you. Also just wanted to ask if you remember whether the washer also needs to have the smoother side to the inside like the circle because i installed my washer facing out since it looked to me like yours was but my circlip wouldn’t seat right and popped off when i tried using the stand. Also wondering if it could be related to that recalled part instead, even though i bought it new.

Thanks for the video... I used a ratchet strap also; Low and around the rear tire; with a Spring puller thru the hook on the end of the strap. This aligned it up with the notch on the center stand. Held the stand up with a bungee cord.. Just barely pushed the puller when it was stretched long enough and released the ratchet. Didn't need to brace the bike since it was the pulling from the tire. it took about 5 minutes this way and no muscles...I don't think I could not have done it otherwise.

I got the first spring on, but the second one broke my spring puller. I took a homemade puller and connected one end to the hateful Honda spring and the other to a length of braided cable (that was looped on both ends). My lovely wife put one foot on the rear tire and with a handle through the cable loop pulled the spring and I forced it into place. If you haven't tried this yet, trust us who have. Those springs are nearly impossible and the cause of much swearing.

@WOODZMAN
@WOODZMAN 6 жыл бұрын
Well I don’t remember mine doing that. You might just want to inspect them and make sure everything is tight and see it the thin metal anti-rattle shims are ok and one of them is not touching the rotor. It may just be the pads doing that and it’s fine. But it sure won’t hurt to look. If you have a way to lift the rear wheel, you can roll it and make sure it’s not dragging.

I'm about to do this! I did a silly thing! I tried to turn my Africa twin by pivoting on the side stand! Didn't work! Now side stand foot isn't flush to the floor! I'm wondering, will it bo ok? Should I replace it? Can I bend it back? Could I have bent the bracket it's housed onto?

Watch that spring! It’s stupid stiff. I would just bend it back

@@WOODZMAN looking more like I slightly bent the foot. There's no movement left to right. On the forum it's a common issue with oem sidestand. It's designed to only take the kgs if the bike. So no loaded panniers or top box, or the usual step on left peg to hop onto seat! Seems strange Honda would design it without taking max kerb weight into account and the fact that most of us can't get our leg over all the panniers from the floor! Even more difficult for a pillian rider!!

Probably just because of the way you tried to pivot it on the side stand, the foot could bend easily

Picked up a new Africa Twin Adventure Sports yesterday with a main stand fitted by the Honda dealer but didn't lift the rear wheel off the ground. Back to the dealers to sort it & they had fitted the wrong one. For Africa Twin it is part number 08M70-MKK-D00 but for the AS model it is 'main stand(high), part number 08M70-MKK-D20. Even dealers can get caught out.

A quick update! Now be honest did you really pull those springs on by Hand? Well if you did you must be the Six Million Dollar Man there is absolutely no way I could pull them on by hand! I used a small ratchet strap with a strong cable tie in the end it was fairly easy. Thanks for the tutorial though.

Haha yea I did but it’s was stupid hard to do for sure. A ratchet strap would have been easier

Honda has a warranty recall for the circlip, the recall states the circlip can fail causing the stand to leave the bike and or the bike to fall off the stand, see your dealer for repair.

Here is an easy 'trick' for the springs. Tie a 1/4 inch diameter braided line to the end of the spring, tie the other end of the braided line around the front of the rear tire. Then slowly walk the motorcycle forward, as the wheel turns it pulls the spring. ;)
