Antonia Young demonstrates how to wear a wool blanket as a cloak, with and without a hood, also as a Roman style toga and below the waist skirt wraps. Useful for camping and outdoor survival as well as quick Halloween costumes. Enjoy! Please check out my Copper Blanket Pins at www.etsy.com/listing/112007740/copper-blanket-pin Also you are invited to visit my meetup group www.meetup.com/Topanga-Back-to-Basics-Crafts/

WoW! Thanks for Sharing. I am amazed at how versatile wearing that blanket is. And it is a great survival technique for staying warm and dry. My Dad alway brought wool blankets just like that camping. And they are not very expensive either. I will definately purchase a blanket pin. Thanks.

That design is a LOT older than cowboy-days. It's a pennanular brooch, and ones like that have been found from Viking, Roman and re-Roman Iron-Age cultures in Europe, dating back thousands of years.

I found a Roman one in a ploughed field. It was made in bronze but sadly is minus the pin. Took me a while to see how it worked. I really ought to look it out and add a brass pin so it can be used

In my country Argentina we use the wool poncho, a hole in the middle and we avoid damaging it by pinching and enjoying every moment, in addition the poncho protects in an excellent way and gives us a lot of mobility and can be used as a blanket, a poncho woven on a wool loom, where the wind, snow and water do not pass

Excellent! Talk about upping your gear selection (kit for our UK peeps) by leaps and bounds with some very creative and valuable knowledge! Throwing this together with an awareness of knots and you've almost weightlessly increased your options in the outdoors by leaps and bounds. Nine years too late but I don't care - this is awesome!

So cool, Ms. Antonio. What a great vid. Thank you for sharing. Wool blankets can be found almost anywhere on the web. Sportsman's Guide has an array of them. Good compliments to the wool blanket are wool socks, gloves and hat. Wool is the only material I know that holds its heat even when wet. ATB, Jb. P.S., that pin looks like a large snap ring.

The “Cowboy clasp” that you are showing is called a Celtic Penannular Brooch and began being popular around the year 700. This early medieval clasp was made of iron and was a very commonly owned item.

Antonia, this is a good demonstration of how the more specialized an item of gear becomes (jacket, parka, skirt), the less versatile it also becomes. A plain, old wool blanket can do many things as you have shown. Oh yeah, and you can sleep in it too! I hope you'll share more videos.

That was a great demo but the Scotts beat you to it :-) They had the Feileadh Mor, the Great Plaid and the Breacan an Fheilidh the belted plaid. They also used a fastener which now a days is a big broach. I like your pin, nice and simple. Now you need a big wool plaid and you are all set. I like your wool blanket idea as Tartan wool is not cheap. Thanks again for the demo, i really enjoyed it. A lot of use full info.

Aye. I am thinking about getting 9 yards so I can wear the Feileadh Mor when I go hunting and bushcrafting. It is a little expensive though, but well worth it. I don't care if it is any particular tartan pattern, but I think different colors of green, faded orange plaid would be nice. Would help for camo.
@fergusrb
@fergusrb 10 жыл бұрын
Clans had different version of tartan. There was one called hunting tartan, I don't think the colors were as bright as I remember. You may want to do some research on hunting tartan.

The Scot’s came from the Saxons. The Saxons came from the Scythians. The Scythians came from Zerah. From Zerah, the lineage goes Judah, Joseph, Jacob, Isaac. Isaac is the root name for the Scythians; Isaacians. Angry Bastard Kilts has most of this info, so I’m not some crazy Bible thumper; but it’s true, the Northern Europeans were Hebrew’s that we’re driven out of Israel through the Caucus Mountains into Russia and Germany, then to Northern Europe and Britain. In fact, the word British is a Hebrew word that literally means covenant man. The Hebrew New Testament is the Brit Ha’deshah, which means Covenant Renewed. Ish is Hebrew for Man. So Brit-Ish is covenant man.
