My only memories of this game are playing it badly in a hotel room with my then-friend. Edit: the guys with the weird face-covering hats, called tengai, are supposed to be komusō, begging monks of the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhism; they were known for wandering around, begging for alms, and for playing the shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute, as part of a meditative practice called suizen. They flourished during the Sengoku and Edo periods, but the Fuke sect was later abolished once the Tokugawa shogunate fell. Because travel was severely restricted during the Sengoku era, the sect managed to get a special exemption from the Ashikaga shogunate, since their whole spiritual practice depended on constantly traveling and begging; they were given the exclusive right to play the shakuhachi and to travel as they pleased. In return, they sometimes served as spies for the shogunate, who would also just sometimes dress up their own people in the outfits and have them pose as komusō to spy; other people looking to avoid notice like ninja and ronin would also pose as komusō. This eventually became common knowledge, though, and so komusō and the Fuke sect began to be considered untrustworthy and became heavily scrutinized, to the point that certain honkyoku pieces (solo pieces played on the shakuhachi) were used to test them: if they could play the piece correctly and in the proper meditative manner, they were deemed a real member of the sect, while if they couldn't or refused to play it, they were ruled a spy and immediately arrested.
