As a resident of Pittsburgh, PA, I can confirm that our benevolent and very active governor did just abort all the Gamestops in the state. I think he sided with the workers and awarded them unemployment benefits on the spot. Governor Wolf has also said that jail time will be forthcoming to anyone who violates his stay and home orders. He more or less said "some people didn't take my order seriously, I warned that fines or jail time could be in anyone's future, guess what, now it is fines AND jail time." However, he and the governor of West Virginia (right next to us in PA) said no one should intentionally call the cops to a business as a prank, or just because you don't like someone who works there, and give them a bad day. The governors also warned that no one should be calling the police on people they suspect have the disease and are ignoring the orders. So America....yay? Back to the thesis statement, fuck Gamestop's corporate masters, may Yevon spit on their graves.

I will put it to you guys this way: I've been annoyed at the "GAMESTOP IS DYING" stuff for years because they still find ways to stay alive and I only really want that headline when it's becoming an actual fact. But...we actually heard of a lot of closings lately. And then they go and pull the most horrific nightmareish move I've seen a non-essential company try to make. There's no way in hell they can be *THAT* desperate if they're not in IMMEDIATE danger of dying out. Even I believe yeah they're dying now. It's a good thing I've started going digital for now all of my recent games. If this company survives, I'm gonna do my best to never set foot in there again.

I'm glad you're that optimistic about big business, but it's entirely possible that greed motivated this decision more so then utter desperation. Just like the Texas lieutenant governor who said seniors should be happy to sacrifice themselves for businesses to open a couple of months earlier than projected. Some people either don't take this Health crisis seriously or are too narrow minded to let it take priority over other things like money. I think it's entirely possible a corporate office working from home far removed from the reality of being a retail worker or consumer could make a decision like this without it being absolutely necessary to the continuance of their business. And I say that as someone who has worked at various corporate offices.

The only way the employees are getting paid is if the stores stay open obviously. So if they close and then the company dies, the employees are out of the job and have to leech money off the government because no one will be hiring any time soon. And the economy can't handle EVERYBODY being paid by the government, so if this keeps up, the employees will be homeless on the street and are now WAY more likely to die. There are people that want to keep working and forcing them out of their job is worse for those people than a company staying open. If you don't like working right now, quit, it won't make a difference if you quit or if you lose your job because they were unable to reopen, so its doesn't affect you if you do.

One topic I've thought about, is...say Gamestop does die (hooray) what happens to the physical game outlet? Does some company come along, and open their own chain of video game stores? Or will they be a thing of the past, and new games will just keep releasing from your Best buys and Walmarts? I know there will always be some local game stores, we have one here that does mostly older games. But does the chain store gap get filled? Or just die?
@RippahRooJizah4 жыл бұрын
It'll probably come back in some form. Look at Toys R Us. But if Gamestop does die out, I doubt there would be a gap filled. Game sales will certainly take a hit but between digital and other retailers getting copies Gamestop's lack of relevancy nowadays means everyone else will take that gap.

GameStop would probably be more successful if they stopped carrying new games (make it pre order only) and went hard on used games. Make b2g2 a permanent thing and advertise it well. You move so much more product and you make full profit on those games as you don’t have to share revenue.

Apparently the government is supposed to pay them what they are owed. How that is possible in any economy with the amount of unemployed currently is apparently not important, the economy could completely collapse and large sections of the people could become homeless, but at least they didn't catch the virus for a day, until the homelessness kills them anyways. Point being, I'm glad I still have a job and am not leeching off the government when they can't afford it, and there are people who need it more than me. The virus is bad, but not that bad, its people's fear of it that is leading them to do tremendously stupid things that are making everything WAY worse and may end up killing more people than the virus does. Not to mention a lot of the precautions being set up are only making it easier for the virus to spread. Because actually thinking about what to do is too slow so we need to just do whatever appears to be a good idea, even if it's worse than nothing at all, so that people think they are safer. Because placebos are more important than actual solutions apparently.

@@christopherjohnson4806 The US government has been gutting emergency preparedness and welfare little by a little bit every single year since Reagan was in charge, saying that horrendous market shocks are a thing for history books. The corporate elite have been outsourcing manufacturing capacity similarly, expecting all opportunity costs from this to be made up by our high skill and service industries. The results of these cost cutting measures are coming home to roost. Most of the other industrialized nations didn't do these things, and they're better for it. Pushing people to work despite the pandemic while there's a shortage of protective supplies is going to make Holodomor look like a joke.
