I really REALLY appreciate that Woolie is catching all the Silent Hill “echoes” that many players had the first time going through this game. The three keys to open Heaven’s Night or the Eclipse, both iconic of entering darkness, or the child disappearing down an inaccessible alleyway, and other similar scenarios between SH1 and SH2. No one ever talks about that, and how this game Used the player’s familiarity to the first game to subvert your expectation about what kinda person James is compared to Harry Mason.

My favorite iteration of this is the first "pursuit into the fog" sequence. In SH1 Harry is chasing the silhouette of his daughter after they've both been in a bad car wreck and he was knocked unconscious. It's the most reasonable action he could have taken under the circumstances. But in SH2? James follows a shambling monstrosity into the fog and all the gross blood trails it left behind, after telling Angela he doesn't care if the town is dangerous. It's such a perfect encapsulation of James' mental state vs. Harry's mental state.

There's this neat bit of flavour text about James' life when Mary took ill, just before you enter Heaven's Night proper. I think it's around 33:46, to the right. It's super easy to miss unfortunately but there are some bottles lying around and if you have James examine them he says: "Liquor bottles. I don't need that right now. It’s not that I don't drink. In fact, I drink a fair bit. To get away from the pain and the loneliness... But the drinking never changes anything... Anyway, I don't need it now. There's something I have to do."

Absolutely, just that one message can entirely change the way you look at James and the story. Such a minor detail adds so much possibility. That's one of the real beauties of SH2; how much it does with how little it uses.

Fun fact: During these escort periods, you can "accidentally" kill Maria. I let my friend borrow my copy of Silent Hill 2 once and hung out with her while she played. She got attacked by a couple of nurses, and I, in my infinite wisdom mistook Maria for a nurse. I yelled "There's one right behind you!", and my friend spun on a dime and shot Maria in the face, killing her and getting a game over. Moral of the story: " Jumpy people shouldn't back seat other jumpy people."

@@Nemesis_T-Type No. While Maria can technically die, all of the monsters you face while she is in tow are low in number *and* slow; it is easy to kill or evade monsters if you keep your wits about you. In SH4, the monsters are both greater in number _and_ quicker; Eileen may not be able to die, but she gets progressively slower and even halts/convulses...making the situation increasingly frustrating. Finally, Maria teleports into rooms once James interacts with a door whereas you have to *wait* for Eileen to catch up to you-know-who.

On every single one of my playthroughs and LPs I've watched, everyone has been able to stomp right as the monster falls to the ground, unless you take too long and they either: a) drag themselves around the floor like the Lying Figures; or b) get back up. It seems to me that the extra hit or two Woolie gives to the monster while they're on the ground is, contrary to his belief, making him lose time and is actually preventing the stomp to work right away. I don't think I've seen Woolie try just stomping right as soon as the monster falls, he always goes for extra hits and that messes the stomp up. Just a guess though, Id' love to know what other people think.

I do love that Silent Hill is separated into Legend of Zelda dungeons. Maria is such an interesting character. A weird mix of desirable and repellant for James. She's sexy Mary! That's good. She's crass and mean Mary! That's bad. And so on and so on... Of course, the biggest downside is that she's not actually Mary. Except when she, emotionally to James at least, IS Mary. I mean, we as the audience have to know something weird is going on, right? A damn doppelganger of the MC's dead wife is a red flag. I love how Maria is so passive aggressive with James and seems to appeal to his love for his wife. James feels like he needs to take care of his wife, and he's subconsciously applying those feelings to Maria as well. That in addition to her looking like a sexualized version of his dead who is flirtatious with him when she isn't implying that he didn't love his wife means that we have a very confused James.

The Power under Toluka Lake is something a bit more unclear, it's more to do with dreams/nightmares then heaven and hell, which is why it was sacred to the natives of the region, and in turn to the Cult that formed within the town... it's just that we only see this power when it's interacting with messed up people, especially in the case of Alessa Gillespie, who was psychically gifted even before the whole "giving birth to God" thing the Cult was trying with her.

not only does woolie have resource management mindgoblins, he has _wrong_ resource management mindgoblins. ammo has a lower priority than healing items, in almost any game. he should probably know by now (having played the first game) that all supplies will be plentiful. but even if he didnt, if sticking to melee means youre taking regular damage, you're doing it wrong. and if you have a temporary extra objective (protect maria), thats when you spend your resources, so as not to take any chances with instant failing if she dies.

I can't wait to see woolie attempt to melee his way through SH3. The knife is terrible and you pretty much don't get a good melee option till you get the katana. The Heather "judgement cut" jokes are going to be great.
