Technically it is, he purposely gave Shang a shit life out of pettiness, necessity a bit, but mainly pettiness. Quan Chi is the unknown factor since we only know that he was slaving away in a mine. However, many things seem to be unintended side-effects of his changes, like the tarkat disease. The timed rotation infuriates me more then the prices. Scummy prices are, well, scummy, but outright NOT ALLOWING YOU to get or even buy content because the game decides you you can't that week or you missed the only window is absurdly worse, and screws over people who are busy, have medical issues, or straight up isn't able to get the game till years after the fact is just disgusting. You should be able to access all the content in a game whenever you want provided you put the time or money in to get it. If a book magically had it's pages torn out if you didn't read enough chapters on a specific day or month people would have pitchforks and torches but for some reason with games people tolerate this nonsense.

It's unfortunately confirmed the Scorpion DA skin is paid only. The official MK Twitter said so. MK 1's gameplay is superior to 11 but literally everything else is a step back. The QoL stuff missing, there's modes missing, the netcode is kinda ass and no crossplay at launch. This game was very obviously rushed due to the WB shitstorm going on and it sucks and with these egregious MTX, WB got their hooks in deeper into NRS. You can't even earn Dragon Crystals in MK 1 like you could earn Time Crystals in 11 through gameplay. Once you do the story/invasion modes and finish character masteries, no more free Dragon Crystals.

The story mode just spits in the face of the player the more it goes on. Functioning versions of quan chi and Ermac are in the story mode as fights, and you have an entire chapter you play as shang tsung in, and it just feels like it's holding the 60$ worth of dlc over your head the more you play

Heck, Goro and Kintaro in MK9 even have cut endings, implying they were playable at some point. Loving street fighter 6, but as someone who just wanted AKI, it is kind of grotesque you essentially have to spend 11.99 usd to do that as she cost 320 of a premium currency. None of the premium currency packs match that so either you spend 30 usd for the character pass or 12 usd for the premium. Afterwards if you do that you'll be 10 coins short of being able to buy another character. So I'll be essentially spending 23.99 usd for AKI and to have premium currency for if I want another dlc character down the line. Fuck buying android 21 was just going to psn and buying her for 4.99. The reason this is happening, from the leaks last year, the game was originally supposed to be injustice 3, suicide squad got delayed till 2024, so wb was panicing needing a game for 2023, so i justice 3 got shelved to have mk1 be worked on. Its very clear this game was rushed out the door forced by wb through ed boons cryptic tweets. NRS was forced to do this. That whole wb discovery merger fucked over many studios than we thought.

Depending on the game, matchmaking will take significantly longer, players at your skill level will either not exist or be extremely uncommon, and in general competitive interest won’t be a thing. Obviously having friends who also haven’t played the game yet almost totally circumvents this problem, but still.

I'm scratching my head about the specifics of the use case for lobbies in fighting games. Clearly there is "a" use case, but I'm not quite clear about the space between matchmaking (with seamless rematching) and private matches that they're supposed to occupy.

You can have multiple friends fighting turns or in separate groups in a much easier fashion. Lobbies is basically a requirement if you have a friend group wanting to play together online without other people. I'm not a MK fan but I'm shocked a high-profile game like this is missing a basic feature. Even Guilty Gear Strive had lobbies from the start.

on the thing about MK1 isnt Tag cause people didn't want to learn an extra character, MK1 actually had a unique option they could have done that only really works with all their timeline BS ...what if it was 2v2 but you could pick the same character twice? if you only wanted to play Sub Zero or Scorpion, now you've got TWO of them

I feel like this isn't exclusive to MK though, fighting games are notoriously expensive to keep up with and that harms the genre more than it helps. It's why a lot of people wait years down the line for a supposed "Complete" edition but by that point you've missed years of changes and metas and you're way behind everyone else.

@@1wayroad935 KI's was ok. While I don't like the concept of a rotating single free character + Jago, it is a way to experience the game without having to pay. Granblue seems like it's going to do the same thing. It feels like it wants to be F2P but not really committing, but it's something at least. Multiversus was actually F2P, but it was stuck in the "beta" phase and couldn't deliver content on time. It had the right idea, but the execution was lackluster.

Titanfall 2's matchmaking lobby system is incredible to this day. The Northstar mod that added dedicated servers is even better but vanilla is still great

A small aside, I didn't realize that the DLC roster is literally three evil superheroes tow that are like superman? That's a bit lame, coming from a group that had fun picks like Hellboy, predator THAT'S all of them! I'm a bit disappointed at their lack of creativity. For once pat was right! I'd at least expect someone like Doomslayer, Bloodborne hunter? You guys even had dave bautista in the commercial and can't get Drax the Destroyer in the roster? Literally two superman clones. Disappointing.

I liked the gameplay of MK11, but the loadouts, and the fact that some characters' default skins/colors were unlockable cosmetics was mega stupid. MK1 deadass looks like the same game, and that's why I'm not even touching it.

MK1 didnt excite me at all despite the last one really making me pretty happy. (Though i liked injustice2 more) but with content rotations, lobbies, dlc prices, and the removal of most of my mains... i just cant get on board with this one. Makes me nervous for injustice 3 to the point I'm very worried.

As much as I think the game looks cool, I simply cannot justify the price of it with all the DLC bloat it has. I mean I'm debating getting the new Forza Motorsport, even though it also has the annoying day 0 DLC problem, because at least the prices seem reasonable compared to MK1. When I look at MK1 and the total price of it, I feel like I'm getting priced out of the market and the hobby of video games in general. If the prices keep going up like this, I'll have to stick with playing older stuff, or wait until it goes on a slash sale.

Here's an idea for how to fix that problem Pat brought up in a 2v2 game where "casual child just wants to play Scorpion". Just let the causal player pick the same character for both slots if they so choose. Explain it in universe with some kind of insane broken time/multiple timeline BS as an excuse to have multiple versions of the same character playable at once, and use one of the previous timelines of the game for the sake of familiarity. Have the actual story breach multiple timelines and just go nuts with it, Because they're already at that point, and it gives the game an excuse in universe for why someone can go and pick Scorpion twice for a 2v2. Just make one or more of the previous timelines continue existing and have it's problems cross over into the current one Liu Kang made, turning the franchise into some mult-Universe madhouse like the first Injustice. Is it stupid? Sure. But the MK timeline has been reset so often by now that that ship has sailed so long ago for MK it's returned to port and is preparing for a second voyage.

Quan Chi being a DLC character available 4 months post release despite being like the 5th most important character in the entire game is insane. It's genius because they chose the best MK characters to get the hardcores in on DLC and the best guest characters to get the casuals to invest for that first year. Just insanely gross, I'll probably only get Quan and then grab the others when the inevitable ULTRA MEGA SUPER PACK releases.

I have always thought that Tekken Tag's way of one character dies you lose the round was always fuckin stupid. I still have another character that can fight. Let me continue. 2v2 woulda been a neat thing that woulda been new and different for MK. But I don't know if casuals want to learn more than 1 character. In my own exp. ppl tend to find their character that they stick with and that's as far as they go.

i pre ordered the game bc mk has been one of my fav series since mkx and I love crazy team mechanics like this has but it feels really shitty Shang Tsung not being in the base roster when he's literally playable in story mode and also the last boss of arcade mode, he's one of my fav characters and I got the premium shop I already have everybody from dlc till the end of the first season but it feels really bad still. there's the same kind of cosmetic monetization as sf6 for costumes and announcer voices and stuff too which is also shitty

That's a bygone problem of selling revisions of the arcade as new versions of the game. Games like Street Fighter 4 didn't let you upgrade to the next versions with it's 1st versions. For that problem specifically, it does seem like it's no longer a thing, with most fighters now doing a seasonal model (which comes with its own ups and downs).

Smartly enough, I used the cash back thats been sitting on my credit card for a couple months in order to sorten that $118 price range to $48 bucks i believe. Still insanely overpriced. If I order the deluxe edition and its over $100, i deserve a full season pass that allows me to get every dlc character that comes out. At least I'd feel less of a sting if they only do 2 or 3 packs of fighters. I can't recall what game that did so, but there was a game that had an all around season pass and only released 1 dlc pack. Unless you have extra cash laying around for a rainy day, just wait for the full version to drop. Hopefully they don't pull a Nintendo and still have you have to buy the packs, instead of having a smash ultimate, complete edition.

Everyone's definitely been talking a lot about the DLC practices and I can't really contribute anything to that. But I do want to share my experience with tag battle and why I like the Kameo system here more than quite literally any other game with a fighting system solely focused on tag. I'm very much a casual fighting game player in terms of skill level, and that's at best. As much as I love the likes of Blazblue, Soulcalibur, and Dead or Alive, I look at literally *any* of the challenge modes for those and even the likes of MK1 now, give them the old college try, and realize I'm simply not cut out for it. At the end of the day, I want to play one, maybe two or three characters at most and simply have fun with that. The aforementioned Tekken Tag Tournament 1 comes to mind whenever tag in fighting comes up. I *despised* that game as a kid. The idea of having to learn two characters, which one tended to end up being my meat shield at best, and the round's lost if even one goes down? Get fucking real; the game ain't even all that fun anyway. Since then, I've had little to no desire to play tag in other fighters. Cross Tag did nothing for me, DOA5 had a tag mode I played every now and then, but couldn't really get into, DBFZ came off a little eh with its tag system there. It asks for a lot out of me that I simply do not have the patience for, nor do I find enjoyment with. The Kameo system is a compromise I can work with. As mentioned, each one tends to have 4 moves and that's not all that much to learn outside of maybe where to time them during combos, which isn't bad. I'd prefer straight up single-combat, but for simply adding a button with a directional pad, I can't really bring myself to complain too hard when I'm still having a good time.
