Then he later clarified that he was joking, it's just embarrassing for him to talk about working out. He still had an insane diet and physical regime to get into the superhero physicality.

Appreciated how Bruce's portrayal acknowledged that chronically staying up all fucking night alone aint good for your health. For instance, half the reason he had those nifty surveillance contact lenses was because his completely fragged circadian rhythm was affecting his short-term memory and so he used playback from those to compensate.

I don't blame Pattinson for not wanting to do those superhero workouts and diets. Ever since Hugh Jackman spoke out about it, all I see is the same sentiment from all these male actors about how you're basically starving, dehydrating and overworking yourself to get this shredded god body. Zac Efron literally stopped doing Hollywood workouts after he ate pasta for the first time in years and actually broke down crying. Yeah Pattinson's right, fuck that.

Fun fact about Christian Bale filming scenes for the Nolan trilogy. To get that shredded look, he had to minimize the amount of water he drank. Then like an hour before the shoot he'd drink a Diet Pepsi or something and then do 50 pushups to get his veins to pop out Having a yolked body isn't a sign of power, it's a sign that you aren't eating enough. The more standard muscled body actually looks more like Tyler1. This. It kind-of reminds me of Keaton's take - specifically the scene where he wants to confess to Vicki Vale but has no idea how to go about it like a normal person, or he didn't know how to do 'rich guy' stuff; Bale's take by contrast just felt like they joked about him having issues or just lampshaded them way too hard, and he was just a rich asshole sometimes.

@@MrStath1986 Keaton’s Wayne feels like someone Pattinson’s Wayne would grow up to. Still awkward and introverted but more confident and little jokey. Not to say everything about Keaton’s Batman was good or spot on he takes joy at of killing mooks and isn’t particularly developed when not being Batman - which is mainly due to Burton caring more about the villains than Batman which is definitely evident in Returns.

Considering how vocal people have been about pattinsons work outside of twilight and about the terrible treatment of male actors fitness to earn/maintain an acting role its weird how out of touch pat and woolie sound when discussing either. As if twilight has been the only thing roberts done in the past ten years, and not wanting to destroy your body to maintain an impossible physique somehow makes him unreasonable when its actually the most reasonable thing that film makers just refuse to do. I know they're not in the know about the movie industry, let alone the american movie industry, and i can understand the twilight thing since social media wont shut up about it but how do they not know about the unrealistic body standards being forced on actors and actresses? God don’t even get me started on Bale’s Batman voice, that thing ruins several scenes that should be absolutely fantastic. Like the scene where Gordon asks who he is and he responds "A hero can be anyone even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy’s shoulders to let him know the world hadn't ended". Subtly letting him know he’s Bruce Wayne, but that dumb fucking growl ruins it. On the topic of The Batman though Pat is totally right about Bruce Wayne being emo and broody, my favourite example is at the funeral when Bruce briefly tries to smile for the camera then a second later hates himself for it and looks like he wants to die. Amazing movie though, great year for Riddler stans between The Batman and Batman: Unburied.

What I like about Pattinson’s choice to have Bruce be a sad weirdo is that it feels realistic to someone who’s had their parents brutally murdered and forced to adjust. Batman just kinda being a confident chad is so uninspired and a little insult to people who suffered like that in real life. I think this movie fumbles with Riddler a bit, mainly with his motives and messaging. They do that thing where the main villain's main motive is actually pretty justifiable, then to make sure audiences don't start to relate with him they have him do something extremely over the top at the end. There's also his thing about "this city doesnt give a shit about the little people, only the wealthy elite and that's why I expose/punish them all!" Then when shit is going down, the movie mainly focuses on the mayor and higher up members of society while the citizens are just kinda in the background suffering. Like what Riddler said. I appreciate the ending, where Batman is leading everyone in the dark with the flare and helping people into rescue vehicles. I like that stuff. I wish there was a scene as Bruce where hes like "hey Ms. Mayor remember when you said I should use my wealth to help? I wish to do that now." I dunno. Still a good movie. Top class Riddler memes.

I think that's the point in a lot of ways though. Riddler is doing what he does to punish the Elite, but what's he's doing isn't actually going to effect any real change, it will just make the Elite more secretive and really only punish the people of Gotham below them. And really when the chips were down, his crusade was really about punishing anyone for what happened to him growing up. Which is similar to Bruce's realization by the end that simply punishing small time criminals isn't enough and all he's doing is venting his trauma and need for Vengeance for his parents. While he's technically doing good, he needs to be more than a blunt instrument and he needs to set his sights higher to make Gotham a better place. Which will likely lead into him make Bruce Wayne a more public figure and using Wayne Enterprises to help Gotham while still trying to be Batman.

For me the whole "no kill" with Batman has always been an issue of tone & audience. For properties directed at general audiences like Brave and the Bold or The Animated Series it's taken completely for granted that Batman isn't going to kill anyone. Given the audience the shows are aimed at & their general tone it'd be more jarring if he did kill someone & anyone complaining he didn't would come across as a edgelord weirdo. The problem comes in when you get into dark, gritty, super cereal affairs like the Arkham games or this movie. Taking the Arkham games as an example (since I haven't seen Battinson), there's essentially no reason to keep the "no kill" rule intact for them. The games are aimed at a teenaged+ audience, feature villains who murder dozens of people regularly, and lean so far into the dark & gothic that the "no kill" rule now looks tonally inappropriate. You can't even argue that it's too important a trait of Batman to change considering how willing the creators are to warp everyone else around him to fit their uber-grit universe. After changing Harley from a gleeful gun moll into a Hot Topic skank & Ivy from a classy femme fatale into a barely clothed sexbomb for the sake of it, forcing Batman to never, ever kill anybody ever seems like an arbitrary choice. And don't anybody even dare point to some comic book run that "totally explains why Batman must never kill" as if it creates some universal constant that all works created before & after must follow. Your options are either keep the property light enough to where "no kill" is taken for granted or toss it out when you darken the setting.
@leithaziz2716
@leithaziz2716 2 жыл бұрын
I cant really see it as arbitary, especially in the games where the antagonists toy with the idea that Batman is just as much of a lunatic as them. His "No killing" rule is the one thing in Bruce's mind that lets him see himself as being in the right. And that perspective creates a lot of interesting moral questions. In Batman: Under The Red Hood, Batman expresses that to him, it's not even about any pre-conceived notions of justice or difficulties of killing. His biggest fear is not knowing what'll happen afterwards when he's got no lines or moral limits to cross. What's stopping him from becoming just as bad as those he deems wrong by that point?

Also especially for Arkham games when they escalate to the point that he's running down people in a fucking tank in Knight and shooting them with a "riot suppressor" machine gun and a 60mm cannon. Like I love the Arkham games and I feel the rule actually does fit in well with Asylum and City (especially given the ending of City). But Im replaying Knight currently and the game has you in the batmobile within 30 minutes of starting and explicitly tutorialises you by just testing the weapons on drone tanks and regular criminals. That said, outside of the Batmobile being a constant tone breaker even then I'd say Knight handles it far better than most live action versions. There are characters like Azrael who exist as more radical versions of Batman, and you can actually help him out, discuss the differences and make him a potential successor as an example if Bruce manages to talk to him enough times and find a breakthrough.

Other than that, I thought it was really stylish, and a lot of neat stuff- interesting takes on the characters. Not my absolute favorite version of the mythos, but pretty okay!

Not really an excuse but I think the movie might've used a bit of Earth 1 Batman comics for the setting, he's not really the best detective in that scenario.

I agree with that take. It's a solid movie with lots and lots of style, I like the overall plot, but it fumbles quite a few times in its 3 hour run, especially the last 20 minutes. Not an amazing film, but solidly good.

I kind of like that Riddler pretty much got everything he wanted but it did not work out in his favor at the end. The Riddlers plan worked perfectly, but it didn’t end like he thought it would because he thought he knew Batman. And it was that Arrogance that made him fail, thinking that Batman was like him.
