Hello Emma, I allways enjoy the Irish landscapes and now you spent your vacations not far from where I live. The museum spinnery is la filature de Belvès, and the village where you stopped while kayaking is called Saint Cirq Lapopie. The sheep breed could be La Caussenarde, the local breed in the Lot region. Your thought about le terroir is right, it's the soil, the weather, and the people that make the properties of a certain place and influence its agriculture.

What a beautiful offering, Emma! It really gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling, it’s always like that whenever someone talks about a fabulous experience in my country… I often feel that we have lost our ways along the path to modernity… just as we value what we are rich of on a scale made of bank notes and coins, forgetting that we have plenty we can offer and exchange without opening a purse, tapping a card or scanning a phone… As for le terroir, the word shares commonality of origin with others such as la terre (soil, ground but also the Earth when written with a capital letter) and le territoire … Le terroir encompasses several things which impacts on the nature, qualities, specificities of what is produced in a local area (either from vegetal or animal origins). It embraces the soil and what it’s made of, the seasons, the weather, the exposure to sun and rain etc. Derived from that and by extension, people often identify it too to something a bit more “philosophical”, touching the soul, I am sure you had a sense, feel of that during your stay, especially when you were looking at the market stalls or people’s vegetable gardens … I was most surprised some 30 years ago when I first came to live in England, to see that gardens were 95% of the time solely devoted to flowers, shrubs and trees… So yes, variety in your garden and in your plate is definitely the spice of life …. and for sure in knitting too (I reckon you are right about the wool, especially thinking about where the sheep live, their environment etc.)! Already looking forward to your next episode! 🧶🇫🇷

Lovely to see your escape to France Emma, the Dordogne has always been a favourite holiday destination for our family - we were actually there last week! We were at the market in beautiful Sarlat last Saturday and also visited La Roque Gageac and Beynac (which I spotted along your canoe trip). And of courseI took my knitting too 😊

I really like the barter business with the hay, the pig, and the grape picking. Interesting thoughts on how the land affects the yarn that is produced, the animals and the plants. I think the land also affects the people, our temperament and culture. Thumbs up to all of you for the long cycle tour 👍 It's the Ulster Cycle on tour!!! 😁😂

You said it right, un terroir is just another word for « the land ». The best explanation I’ve seen, from a vineyard point of view, was in the movie French Kiss. All the hints that are taken up from the ground of a certain area can leave their notes in so many things. 😊 What a beautiful vlog! Thank you for sharing

Hello, your are famous in France ! A lot of persons know you, know your beautiful work ! We feel French, but we belong to our terroir, with our food, folklore, habits etc... I live in French Alpes and I don't have the same eating habits than my sister who lives near the ocean. I'm sorry but I don't have English vocabulary to explain it, but I feel more from my terroir, than French, if it makes sense...
