Fantastic stream Wooly. Great insight, wish i'd seen this video earlier. I thought I was the only one dragging my foot on take off, off and on for years, to the point where I reckon i've broken my second toe multiple times...its now fused at the second joint (in the middle) with a big calcified bony bump.......the joys of surfing injuries and there's a few :)

Love it! On the paddling in thing, totally agree. head down, weight forward until the last second as you have caught the wave, just before popping up.

Man, I so much appreciate and can relate to the injury portion especially being the same age. Crazy how it affect us and how the proper rehab can assist with keeping us stoked. Flexiblity and core strength is an absolute mandatory. I had herniated disc and I was back to the beginning. Finally back from that, but with a humbled viewpoint.

I had that same folding toe issue on a soft top. Not sure why but it happened on one particular one and not other soft tops. Very strange to say the least. Anyways, really enjoyed the podcast. Wooly you're a legend. Van thanks for doing this for the surf community. Cheers

On the paddling part: I think this is somehow one of the most overlooked thing in surfing and I find it's somehow ironic considering how much time we actually spend paddling around for a reason or another. A big "a-ha" moment for me was understanding that consistent tempo and big, strong, pull underwater was the key. Which is weird for someone having a swimming background, but at the beginning the correct paddling technique was challenging to figure out. Part of the confusion came from people around doing a lot of different things and I took them for granted as they were "more experienced", just to find out that people that are surfing for longer than you are not necessary better or have something to teach 😅. So yeah, when someone say "paddle hard", know that they don't mean "throw your arms around like you're a windmill about to explode" but it's more "try to grab as much water as you can and pull yourself forward". It's literally a vertical pulling motion, if you're weak in that area doing pull ups works like a charm. Best 🤙

Hi Can I ask you with your surfing experience, if the big baron it’s user friendly board for a family guy (45 yrs), weekend warrior, in low intermediate level (I just start to bottom turn and approaching the lip!) It seem the rails do not allow any mistakes/correction and turn very sharp and therefore if the foots are not in the right place, it will easily wipeout! It seem the Big Baron is for surfers with advance skills, that’s why, you and Wooly who like performance surfboards, chose this board! maybe it’s not for common people… Can you give me your thoughts Thank you for your time and opinion, Best regards, Cheers from Portugal (Europe)

The board size thing I think more applies to bigger guys…a bigger guy can sink a rail on anything. Not the case when you weight 130lbs

Woolly is a very natural honest humble bloke. However a word of warning to middle age guys, as your body gets older you will develop bad habits and you will need to reanalysis. Lovely conversation 👍 I don't believe you fellows are familiar with Angourie. 'Don't say it too loud.'
