As a kid with my first modem, months down the line, I found out all the dial-up noise was coming out of an on-board speaker, on the modem.... Somehow, I guess I thought that was just what a modem "sounded" like.... EVERYONE put up with the sound, we should have just cut the speaker.

At least with later modems, it was possible to turn off the speaker. I did that at one point, but I didn't like not knowing when it was almost done.

Most of us techies ran with it on. If you dialed the wrong number and heard a person answer you had the opportunity to pick up the line and apologize. While connecting, you could tell by the tones how good/bad the connection was going to be or if it was struggling to make the connection. Each of those bings and growls have a meaning.
