Located in the county of Worcestershire, and around 25 miles southwest of Birmingham, is the city of Worcester.
The first recorded reference to Worcester comes from the 7th century AD where it is referred to as 'Weorgoran ceaster'. 'Weorgoran' is Old English for 'people of the winding river', presumably in reference to the River Severn which runs through the city, and 'ceaster' refers to a fort or settlement, implying an earlier Roman occupation of the area.
On the bank of the River Severn is perhaps the most famous landmark of the city - Worcester Cathedral. Built in the 11th century (with additions up until 1504), it is the resting place of King John, who died in 1216.
During the Middle Ages Worcester became a producer of cloth. Industry in Worcester would later include engineering, glove-making and porcelain. Royal Worcester was established in 1751, and is one of the oldest English porcelain brands still in existence today.
In 1815 the Worcester and Birmingham Canal opened, opening up new trade routes. Between the late 18th and early 19th century Worcester was a major centre for glove-making, employing over 30,000 glovers at its peak. However in 1826, import duties on foreign gloves were removed, leading to a decline in the glove industry in Worcester. One company that did survive this setback was Dents, established in Worcester in 1777 by John Dent. The company produces luxury leather products, with some notable royal customers that include Queen Victoria, George VI and Elizabeth II.
Another brand with strong associations to the city is Lea & Perrins. In 1837 local chemists John Wheeley Lea and William Henry Perrins concocted a new condiment which, after 18 months, they found had matured into a tasty sauce that they decided to put on sale. Two years later the sauce had been introduced to the United States, and to this day it is a worldwide brand. How the Americans fare with pronouncing 'Worcestershire sauce' is another question...
The walk starts on the bank of the River Severn before heading up and around the grounds of Worcester Cathedral. We then head out onto the High Street where we see a statue of Edward Elgar. Born in the village of Broadheath just outside Worcester in 1857, Elgar was one of the world's leading composers in the Romantic era.
We then proceed toward's Worcester's oldest, and arguably prettiest, street - Friar Street. Here we see a number of old timber-framed buildings, including Tudor House. Built in the 16th century, it is a free-to-visit museum. Heading back to the High Street we pass by Worcester Guildhall. Completed in 1723, its architect, Thomas White, was a student of Christopher Wren (of St Paul's Cathedral fame).
Worcestershire County Cricket Club play their home games at New Road, just west of the River Severn. The city is also represented in rugby union by Worcester Warriors.

Wonderful video, this is my local city and have sung in the Cathedral many times. Sadly Worcester is a city of contrasts. It has some wonderful buildings but suffered badly in the sixties. Friar Street has the most unsympathetic piece of town planning I have ever seen, they demolished medieval Lych Street opposite the Cathedral at 5am in the morning, this also included Cathedral lych gate and built the ugly shopping centre which includes that helterskelter ramp at the rear which sadly blights Friar Street and the city. Something people are starting to regret today. The decision to demolish Friar Street made the national press with the Guardian describing it as "the r*pe of Worcester"
@4KExplorer
@4KExplorer 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it did strike me as odd seeing that helterskelter ramp on the same street as those Tudor buildings. But then council workers are often overpaid with no skin in the game, i.e. they probably live miles away from their own patch... if I were to speculate, of course.

@@4KExplorer well the planning application got through by one vote. The fact that it was bulldozed at 5am in the morning speaks volumes. The planning department will be elected councillors so they would have been very well aware of what they were doing, I suspect some did live far away but Worcester is the county town so they should have had some awareness but they probably didn't care, this sort of thing was rife in the cities. The Germans managed to rebuilt their bomb devastated cities, we wrecked ours in the 60's and 70's instead! I imagine money was a big inducement. Why else demolish a medieval street opposite your most prized architectural asset (the cathedral) and in the process blight a historic city.

It is a shame and we can rage against these vandals and fools who made these ridiculous decisions. However we don't need shopping centres anymore so a local campaign group should form to have the ediface demolished and replaced with sympathetic architecture which blends with the remaining medieval bldgs for people to live in. Or create a city centre green space. Either way there is no need to have that anymore.

Luckily Worcester is not that big of a city. There are 2 main campuses in the city, City Campus which is pretty close to the centre, I'd say around 10-15 minutes of walk, and St John's Campus, which is on the other side of the river is about 20 minutes from City Campus, max half an hour from the centre. You can walk basically everywhere, no need to take the bus at all. I strongly recommend the Uni, everyone is really nice, and the city is simply perfect for students, with a lot of possibilities to party and shop. :)

Is it even multi cultural. See no sign of that
@daveunbelievable6313
@daveunbelievable6313 Жыл бұрын
Not really, it's mostly White English. I think diversity is great where it exists, but it's not gonna happen everywhere, and the places where it isn't as much a thing aren't necessarily bad places that need to be changed. Migration doesn't happen evenly, people from abroad come here to live in specific centres of industry and wealth, not everywhere is going to be as attractive to migrants as London.
@marksilverwood2078
@marksilverwood2078 Жыл бұрын
It is very welcoming and multi-cultural like most English Towns and City’s are, the fact one of Britain’s biggest mosques is going to be built here would confirm this. The City has also donated 2 of its largest hotels to house asylum seekers, as again are most English Towns and City’s - although it rarely gets recognised or acknowledged for some reason. The City has a very high Eastern European population - in part as a result of Worcestershire having a very high fruit and vegetable exportation.
