We all know them, but we don’t all love them: the horrible Word Problem. Often, they seem like something designed just to trick or confuse us. But, actually, word problems fit right into how we need to look at math equations. They make us think about math visually and help us apply math to everyday situations.
Presented by Arizona State University and Crash Course, Study Hall is a tailored series of KZbin Learning Playlists aimed at helping you with resources to navigate college and your education path. Count on Study Hall to guide you to and through college.
Thanks to viewers like you, Study Hall has grown and moved from the ASU KZbin channel, where it launched in 2020, to its own channel. View your favorite videos and new ones at links.asu.edu/gostudyhallh1. We can’t wait to see you there!

Thank you to the sharp eyes that caught a typo. The solution at 6:25 should read 4800, not 480.

Yeah, I was just paused on that and decided to scroll down to see if there was an explanation. Thank goodness, thought I was loosing it. I've learned to follow along and attempt all problems presented before they are solved on screen, so that threw me.

I so appreciate several things like recognizing the emotions and fun, yet Wow, this is still a BIG jump in complexity and unrelatability of the 1st equation! for people who have already had bad experiences and arent sure of what they can actually do. Love the 2nd equation, and am looking for others that are VERY easy to see patterns and math in real life situations. For homeschooling I'm going to have to skip the 1st example so they can relate. But thank you for this whole series!

Awesome lecture I just had a suggestion for the first-word problem I believe it should be written like this; one gallon of 50% salt solution is mixed with 3 gallons each containing 10% salt solution. The way it is worded the 10% would have to be divided over the 3 gallons! So the concentration can have either equal or varying concentrations!

Years after thinking about this I realized it was an algebra problem: My Mack truck only goes 67 mph at its maximum rpm, because it's a vocational truck and has really low gears. The wheels have a 22 inch radius and the transmission output is .71:1 with the engine while in high gear. What ratio gearset do I need in the rear end to give 75 mph at 1700 rpm? Show your work. (Hint: each revolution of my 44 inch tall wheels will carry the truck forward 69 inches, or 79,200 inches per minute at 75 mph.)

You have 200m of fencing, but do you have to use it all? If you make it 80x1 the goat can still fit and you've saved some fencing

5:36. Where does it say I need to use all 200 meters of fencing? Sounds wasteful. I'd just make the width 1 meter so the goat can fit and then the length is also just 1 m of the 200. The area becomes 1 and I've saved 197 meters of fencing for another project. PEDA approved. Gotta thank minecraft for this. It's things like this in word problems where you're almost trained to make assumptions. I'm a swe, so breaking things where you don't expect them to is common. I've also learned you NEVER make assumptions; always clarify if there's missing details. You need to be more precise with wording. The classic "Can you get a bottle of milk from the store, and if there are eggs, can you get a dozen please?" The husband returned with 12 bottles of milk.

I have one question though....what if one of your friends buys 3 sodas and 2 popcorns and pays $6, and also Another friend of you buys 2 sodas and 1 popcorn for $4. Then if you take one popcorn from each of your friends, how much will you pay them back?
@yashikakathuria7654
@yashikakathuria7654 3 жыл бұрын
You would technically pay them back $0 since the popcorn itself costs $0, which doesn't seem very realistic price.
