That's the skill in hard mode, you have to avoid locking yourself into situations like that.

When one plays with the extra constraint of completing it in less than a minute (and succeeds most of the time to beat the clock), hard mode heck is bound to happen sometimes. I think Mark proved he has the skills to usually avoid it. Sorry for the loss of the streak.

To predict _USTY would be dangerous and try to use D, R, F, M with the limitations of the yellow S, T, U Quite difficult especially with the time constraint

Got it in 6, was stuck between MUSTY and BUSTY on the last guess but went for MUSTY because I thought BUSTY might be a bit blue for Wordle

Day before was a close SHAVE in 6, but this one brought some luck my way with RAISE -> CLOUD -> MUSTY with those 2 starters somehow ruling out most of those variants Mark mentioned 😁

I've been playing in hard mode since this series introduced me to the idea. Like Mark, I don't use the game setting; I self enforce. For the last few weeks I've used a modified rule, where guess #5 can be anything. I find it's more fun this way, since it give a way out of traps like Mark's today (besides luck).

A mate of mine will not play in hard mode because he thinks you should be able to be strategic if necessary. I’m starting to agree with him. Hard mode can just become a game of luck and that’s not what wordle is about.

There's always an element of luck in this game. I don't think these hard mode traps change that that much.

I have hard mode switched off because I think of it as ‘easy mode’. Because it prevents you making certain stupid errors.

I agree. Hard mode is "sometimes force random guessing" mode; it doesn't let a skillful player use their skill.

I switched to hard mode as easy mode got too boring. Yes, I lost streaks to HMH but that is the thrill of the chase so to speak.

IMO, hard mode should treated like an achievement rather than a setting. Give me credit for getting the word with the hard mode constraints but let me fall back to “easy” mode to preserve my streak, if I so choose.

I got incredibly lucky with this one with a 2! Surge > Musty I was contemplating a couple others like musky and the other usty words because for some reason I felt sure it was going to be _US__ and it paid off really nicely.

Yup, MUSTY would have been informative. (Mold and mildew and all) Should've gone with that (Although, RUSTY -- as in a "rusty nail" is informative, too) Between those two . (DUSTY -- as in dusting the house-- I can't see in "hard mode heck") Good job, anyway, Mark. Cool music.

For some reason after STARE as my first guess I went for JOUST as my second; very similar to Mark's JOIST. It was an odd second guess but it worked out for me as it gave me more options on the "hard mode heck" scenario.

With busty and gusty before I got it in six. I think there might have been other possibilities but I don't remember right now. That was 3 days in a row where I got it in 6. Is that lucky or unlucky? Whatever, the streak continues.

Oh dear. I was lucky with this one, started with PLACE but guessed MOIST next. One letter off made all the difference. But I'm not consistent enough to ever have a streak worth worrying about.

The error you often make is not attempting to SOLVE in 3. I always attempt the three. Even if I have 'nothing'. I've gotten 3's from 10 greys before or even a single yellow. Remember Wordle 833? I got a 3 on that and only had a single yellow D. 🙂 Elimination and intuition. Oh, and remembering that Wordle likes to throw you things like double/repeating letters and multiple combinations before or after consonant groups. I remember getting _ATCH right, as WATCH was the only option of the 9 choices that doesn't have the 'A' sound. lol!

He's trying to solve it within a minute tho, and in even less time if he can. He could adopt a mindset of carefully considering all options after two guesses like you're suggesting, but he's balancing quality of his guesses along with the speed of his overall solve. Different goals lead to different approaches

So sorry! I didn't try BUSTY because I figured that was a word the NYT would not use. It's a bit risque. I actually got lucky with LOSER - PUSHY - MUSTY. I had DUSTY waiting in the wings as my next guess, and GUSTY never even occurred to me.

I play in hard mode, too, but I'm not above cheating - I was in a similar position and opened up an incognito browser to fins the answer. Mostly I just hate that it tells me the answer - I'd much prefer if the game allowed you to keep trying after you've lost

You said dusty musty ...and then went for rusty...so annoyed for you. My head said musty then I went dusty and musty was my fourth attempt. It's never easy on hard mode but that's the idea.

Is there actually a rule written somewhere that you are not allowed to try drums as he suggested? In a puzzle like this all clues must be earned and I don't see why that isn't a valid way to earn a clue?

He uses hard mode (a setting in Wordle) that requires that the letters you know are used in the subsequent guesses.

Mark is having the worst luck with these words lately :( Personally I somehow almost fluked a 2, had ROYAL as my first choice then for some reason, thought MUSTY and decided that that was a stupid word and probably wasn't right and went with MISTY instead so wound up getting it in 3.

Fortunate that my earlier words precluded BUSTY, LUSTY, and RUSTY, although still DUSTY, FUSTY, GUSTY to go wrong on. Got it in four, however, with two pretty silly words that had a double letter. Trying to be fast. BUILT TUTOR PUTTY MUSTY And according to Fowler's, STUNK is a genuine past tense, as well as past participle.

what I would’ve done in the end is on the 5th guess done a word like “dream” so I can see if any of the three possible letters are there, then go from there on the 6th guess.

Instead of brute forcing it perhaps is better to give up 1 chance to try a word like DRUMS and see which letter is the one.

Well, this makes me feel better about being in 4 guess jail. Stare > Hoist > Dusty > Musty If i had gone with Moist for second… I checked and it had been the answer before though.
