I installed a replacement coil on my unit by myself. After being quoted $50 for 1 pound of coolant. Then the A/C man wanted to replace my entire air handler for $4200 because to coil was leaking. I saved myself about $4700 doing the job myself. The system works great now. I appreciate your videos. I have learned a lot from them.

@mythrol4 жыл бұрын
So you got the replacement coil, refrigerant, and all the tools to properly do a change out of a coil for free? Otherwise you didn't save $4700. Makes for a nice story but isn't true. What did the guy quote you for just the coil change? A coil change out is usually around $1400 - $1900 dollars depending on who quotes it and how much refrigerant is lost. Buying a jug of refrigerant, a vacuum pump, a torch set, the replacement coil, a set of guages, a temperature clamp, the odd and end tools for removing the old coil and putting the new one in; that all costs money. Did you also change the filter dryer on the outside when you changed the coil? Bet you didn't, but you're supposed to. It's working right now, sure, my suggestion is save up all that money you "saved" though because you're going to need it. Yeah. You saved yourself maybe $500-800 bucks after you got everything you needed to do the change out yourself. You didn't get a warranty for that coil though. No chance is any manufacturer giving you a replacement if there's a problem. So sure, you saved some cash and that's great. But let's not paint some crazy BS story because you could have had a professional replace it for not a ton more than it would have cost you to do *correctly* and you'd have gotten a warranty. I can promise you if I roll up and you tell me something along the lines of "yeah I changed the coil myself" I'm either walking away immediately or I'm charging you a ton. Because how can I trust anything you did? You're going to be the exact same person who is either going to be over my shoulder the entire time I'm trying to work trying to get me to give you free advice to try and do the work after I tell you what's wrong or you're going to be calling and complaining because I can't fix what YOU broke without changing a bunch of stuff. I don't want either of those headaches. Change a cap yourself, heck change a fan motor yourself. No customer should be touching a coil change out though. Don't like the price quoted? Try a different company and ask them to quote you just a coil change out. Most quotes are free.
@ScottySmac4 жыл бұрын
@@mythrol let me guess. You own a AC shop? If you can't add simple numbers it's your fault. I said he wanted to change the entire airhandler out. ($4200). The system was completely empty and at$50 per pound, you do the math. (If you can). I did not need the recovery tank because the system was empty. Yes, I bought the manifold gauge set, mat torch, 2 dryers, coil, 25 lbs of 410a. TXV, for about $800. Why do you slam people you don't even know and say you can't do that job? You think I care about a warranty if I installed it? You can pay all the money you want to your air conditioner man, your choise. But don't come on here acusing me that I could not do the job. I can do a lot of things I'm sure your not aware of. But you should not bare false witness against people. Especially when you In fact... Do not know.

It's hot here in Dallas Texas. Heat index 110, heat advisory, and my lovely wife says the ac is blowing warm air. It's after 5:00pm I have a great AC guy but he's going to charge me $$ just to look at it. I did most of what you said, checked the filter, it was ok, fresh batteries in the thermostat and I had a spare run capacitor - not going to pay 75 dollars again for my ac guy to replace it. Air out of the vent dropped from 85 degrees to 65 degrees. Thanks... we are sleeping cool tonight. Keep of the great work.

Thank you SO much! You were my KZbin mentor yesterday and it took most of the day, between watching KZbin, Googling, trips to the hardware store for parts. I'm not the typical demographic of someone who fixes AC units, shall we say. But finally through process of elimination, mostly from your video series plus a few helpful bits from others, fixed my AC - it turned out to be a $10 canister fuse blown at the wall shut-off next to the AC unit. In between, I had to learn how to use a multi-meter to read voltage, watch your safety tips like with handling the capacitor etc. I surely would have been better off paying a professional rather than take all day myself, but there was a huge backlog and we are in a heat wave, couldn't wait. So this was life-saving. Thank you for your great informative series.

I cannot thank you enough for this detailed information. My AC stopped cooling the house last night. Now I know what may be causing that. During the middle of the night I heard a very loud knocking noise outside of where the air-conditioner unit is located. At first, I thought someone was knocking on my steel siding. Then I listened to hear if the AC was still running and it seemed to be. When I checked the unit this morning, I noticed that the fan seemed to be working fine but did not hear the compressor turn on. My HEIL unit is 22 years old but is only used about 2-3 months in the summer as I live in Minnesnowta. You are such a blessing for sharing this information!

You should become HVAC instructor. You made your explanations easy to understand for everyone without HVAC knowledge. I've been trying to learn HVAC myself but most videos out there talk too much but barely going to the point, find out issue and solutions. You have experiences inside and out, you can talk all day without the scripts. Most issues usually happened out there with relay, capacitor, cleaning the coil, replace thermostat battery. You have instructed how to replace these and save homeowners' a lot of money. Very well done and thank for the videos. One issue I found myself before that when weather transition from the Fall to Summer, the outdoor AC unit didn't run when it first start, I just shut down the A/C breaker and turn back on, somehow the power kicked in the unit and the unit start to run and everything are fine. Sometimes the tech got lucky but it took care the issue and save the money.

Saved me tons of $$$ and days being cooked to death waiting for a technician to come. The hardest part was trying to find the part I needed, which was impossible to find locally, so we had to wait in literal hell roasting in a house of nearly 90 degrees for a couple of days for Amazon shipping, but it came, I replaced the part and saved our lives. Great Channel! Clear & realistic instructions wrapped in sound advice. Here's my story of why my AC wasn't keeping up as we start this summer: I changed my motor out this past winter (with your good counsel). I used a universal replacement motor and naturally, even though my old motor was on the medium speed, I naturally figured if medium is good and worked for 15 years, then surely "High" is better - can anyone relate? As usual, more is not always better, I over powered my coils. The air was blowing over the coils so fast the humidity stayed with the air all the way into the house; as I figure it, the air wasn't around the coils long enough to "cool off".. Bottom-line: I switched the black wire with the blue wire and it's back on medium speed. Now she's keeping up just like she always has - Go figure! Kudos to my original install team - their calculations were apparently "spot - on"! (smile)

Bad Capacitor was my problem. It looked fine but I replaced it anyway and the problem was solved. I then took the old capacitor and did not notice anything wrong until I placed it on my kitchen counter. The capacitor had a slight "bulge" on the bottom of it and it could not stand on the counter properly ( I did not notice it by just looking at it). It rocked back and forth. Since then my unit runs great! I really learned A LOT from you and you saved me a lot of money. Good luck in Hawaii, I did not have an AC unit growing up there but I heard people are now getting AC units.

One thing I might add is to make sure the blower motor is spinning in the correct direction. A recent airflow issue I was having was caused by the blower motor turning in the opposite direction after replacing the blower module. I was able to reverse the polarity (swapped the positive and negative wires at the motor connection to the module) and got it to spin in the correct direction. Airflow was restored and AC was getting to temp again.

Had a partially plugged up condensate drain that caused intermittent hvac operation. Water would build up until it lifted the float of the Safe t switch, shutting the unit down for five minutes until the tstat built in delay would allow it to restart, at which time the build up of water under the safe t switch would have drained out .but temp on tstat was higher than set point. I caught it when I looked at the tstat when the safe t switch had triggered and it was blank from loss of power. Cleared the drain line and all was good.

First of all, thank you for sharing the video. It followed your process and it helped me understand my unit much more than what I did before (which is practically next to nothing). I have two AC units (one for down stairs and upstairs). Downstairs was working fine but for some reason, upstairs was not working. So I called the technician. It turns out that the AC power switch for upstairs was turned off. He turned it on and viola! it started working (shows how little that i knew about my units.. .and I had to pay for it too). While he was there, he checked the freon on both units and tells me that he needed to fill them as well since they are running low (both are around 20 years old) and told me that I should consider replacing them. Fine. I called around to get an estimate. A week after the freon was filled, I noticed that the downstairs AC is no longer blowing the cold air. I called the technician back to check and he says that it was filled with freon and he needed to go up the attic to check the capacitor. It was an odd hour and I was out of the house then so he said he'll be back the next day the check. He didn't show up. Just to do my due diligence before I pay him more, I checked everything following your direction... and this is what I found. All the units were working fine... outside AC, upstairs Attic, and it feels that the air was circulating properly. What I noticed, however, is that the upstairs AC unit on the outside, which is now working) is blowing up hot air through the fan. Downstairs AC Unit (which is NOT working) is blowing up cold air. hmm.... I checked the thicker pipe line coming out of the AC out of the outside, and the upstairs one (which is working) was cold. But the pipeline coming out of the AC unit for downstairs (which is NOT working) is not cold at all. Can you help me understand what is happening and what could be the issue?

Word of Advice TV No joke! It’s my moms AC unit I was peeking at for “fun” and allegedly she’s had nothing done to it since 93 when it was installed (other than annual spray down of the outside coil). Unbelievable. Delta T shows 18 degrees. Unit sits in the shade. Maybe that has helped. Hope your house selling and work is going well!
@WordofAdviceTV4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a little beast! Yeah, as far as I know, if the unit is not baking in the sun all day it does help it last a bit longer. The house is already sold but the closing process can take up to 60 days and we won't be moving until then. The corona virus has really made this process a lot slower... So just waiting now.

Word of Advice TV congrats on selling your house! Are you heading straight over or planning to stick around here at all before moving? If you need anything, definitely don’t hesitate! Also, congrats on your channels continued growth and success. It’s great to see the new subscribers pile on! You’ve certainly earned it.

I watched a very detailed video last year of a guy taking apart a 2004 f-150 cold air intake manifold. His video was the closest to my vehicle. Despite 30 degree weather, tight spaces, constantly dropping things bc i could not feel my fingers i went from a guy with an elaborate first purchase tool set to finally admitting defeat and having AAA tow it to my normal mechanic who encouraged me to try. I think it had between 8-12 bolts total holding it in on both sides . It was heartbreaking, but my mechanic said, "Good job." His assistants took 3 days, putting it back together as i took cell phone pics and labeled some items with tape and a marker. My point is excellent video, i actually have 3 pages of notes and references i paused,wrote down, and even screenshot. We have a professional coming hopefully this week, but i can tell him the easy things i tried to help him rule things out. I also contacted a number about the solar screens to see if it is legit or not, I will be calling to see if i qualify for a home energy audit , and in total i have 3-4 pages of detailed notes from your video and still have to follow up on a couple you used in making this one. I normally never write comments, hence why this one is all over the place. But this one made me want to learn more and more. I subscribed to your channel and finally just wanted to say thank you for presenting the material in a way i wanted to learn more and more. I look forward to looking back at your other videos and new ones to come.

Remember a duct leak in attic is the same as pumping air outside which creates a double wammy. Not only are you pumping or drawing outside air inside, you have to makeup that air from air leaks either in or out of structure depending if leak is supply or return.

My neighbor just had their 42 year-old AC replaced at a cost of $12,000 and mine is the same age (moved in in Dec 78 -new house). I could tell that my AC had been getting a little less efficient over the past couple of years and I was thinking of replacing it too. I watched your video and checked one thing that I had not checked before. When I checked the coils at the top of my air-handler, they were dirty. I almost looks like they had installed a very thin charcoal filter on the inside. Once I cleaned it, the air volume coming from the vents was much greater. It is supposed to get to 104 today and tomorrow so I hope this change will keep my house at 76 instead of 81/82. Thank you for the great video and for saving me from having to replace my AC in the summertime.

Non-condensables is major problem with 410a equipment during a seal break. System needs to be pulled down below 500 microns and hold. If blended refrigerant is introduced to air, nitrogen, or water, AC will not keep up on hot days. I learned the hard way:$

Hey Jay. Thank you for your very informative videos. Good job! I have an AC problem I just can't resolve, so far. Two days ago my AC started blowing warm air. Since then, I've done the following: 1) replaced filter below blower, 2) replaced dual cap - slightly rounded out both ends, 3) installed hard start, 4) replaced condenser fan, 5) checked low side pressure - 75 psig, 6) ohmed out compressor from contactor T1, T2, Cap Herm (2.0+0.8=2.8) - I did not ohm to ground, & 7) replaced thermostat batteries & checked wire contacts at thermostat. My symptoms: after a short delay from thermostat Set point, compressor kicks on, condensor fan kicks on, semi cold air comes out registers. After a few minutes (5), warmer air starts blowing out. I go outside and compressor still running, but fan kicked off. Almost like short cycle syndrome. Air gradually gets warmer. Low side feels cold'ish to touch. Then I turn thermostat off so compressor doesn't get too hot. Condensor fan seems to cycle on/off. Maybe bypass thermostat by jumping R & Y to eliminate thermostat? Check 24 V at contactor & check plunger action (2 arms). Suggestions?

@WordofAdviceTV Жыл бұрын
Thank you! If you have a filter by the furnace/air handler that is enough. But if there is no filter there and the return grill is the only place where your filter slot is, then there should be a filter behind it.

If an AC unit is undersized, there are actually a few things that can be done to help it out. Sealing all the gaps around doors, windows, attic access panels, pipes, etc to the best of your ability can make a big difference without breaking the bank. All those seemingly small gaps really add up. Adding insulation to the attic can make a huge difference as well, especially on older houses with little to no insulation. Sealing all those tiny gaps in the ducts really helps too. Depending on what kind of windows you have, replacing them with more energy efficient windows may make a big difference. Anything you can do to reduce humidity will help the unit out too, so throw out the wife's house plants and use the exhaust fan when you shower. Turn off any extra electronics that you aren't using such as TVs, lights, computers, etc, those just add to the heat load. If you can reduce the heat load on your AC unit enough that it keeps up, you will be better off than having it replaced with a larger unit because you will lower your power bill instead of increasing it.
@averyalexander23034 жыл бұрын
@museack Nor does it make sense to spend thousands replacing the whole AC unit with a bigger one that will cost more to run if that money could be spent on energy efficiency upgrades that would reduce heat load enough that the current unit would be adequate and cost less to run. What makes the most sense depends very much on the situation. For example, If someone has an old, drafty, poorly insulated house with a decent but somewhat undersized AC unit, they are likely to be able to reduce the heat load enough for their current unit to keep up just by sealing their ducts, insulating and air sealing the attic and replacing the weatherstripping around their doors. That would certainly be a more economical option than replacing the whole AC unit, especially considering that reducing the heat load would reduce the power bills rather than increasing the bills like a larger AC unit would. However, if someone has a more modern house that is already sealed reasonably well without much room for improvement and the AC unit is 20 years old and undersized, the most logical option would likely be to replace the unit since it is likely reaching the end of its life anyways and replacement would be about the only option.

@barbarab99734 жыл бұрын
I find your videos very informative. I’ve got an issue that may stump you though. Just had a new condenser installed yesterday on the house I rent. Tech can’t get the split in temps between intake and vents above 13 degrees, says it should be 22 degrees. We’re experiencing an excessive heat warning at this time with daytime highs over 110 degrees. In the past, with old condenser, and r-22, the temp of air coming from vents was in the mid to upper 40s. I’ve not seen the temp from vents go below 53 degrees yet with new condenser and new refrigerant type. This system does have a refrigerant leak and the source was not found prior to the new install. It’s possible the leak may be fixed with the condenser replacement, but so far, we don’t know. The tech adjusted something today that did reduce the humidity felt in the house (felt like a swamp cooler), and seemed to increase airflow, but air doesn’t feel colder. Is this just how the new refrigerant works? Seems less efficient. I would appreciate any input. Thank you for your time. Barbara

I had a plumbing heating and air company come out to look at my water heater that needed replacing and they looked at my HVAC unit and said I should replace it because it’s original to the 2001 home. At the time it was working fine but since they were here it will run but doesn’t cool. They came back and said it has a short, which can happen at any time, and they’d charge $700 to find/repair….I’m hoping your video might help me get it back to working how it was before this company had their hands on it!🙏🏼
